Washington, DC - In a September 28 Proclamation honoring American families on Family Day, President Barack Obama wrote, “Whether children are raised by two parents, a single parent, grandparents, a same-sex couple, or a guardian, families encourage us to do our best and enable us to accomplish great things.”

While it is good to hear President Obama honoring same-sex couples who are parenting children, it is still unfortunate that the Defense of Marriage Act prevetns same-sex couples’ marriages from being honored by the federal government.
I think the best way to support same-sex parents and to solidify same-sex parenting families is to permit them legally to marry.
I also think that this would have been an excellent opportunity for the White House to showcase gay and lesbian parents and their families at the signing of the proclamation. Unfortunately, this did not happen.
Despite my reservations about President Obama’s proclamation, I cannot imagine that George W. Bush ever would have made such a proclamation, and this give me reason to believe that we are making progress.
