Philadelphia's GLBT community centers on the neighborhood of Washington Square West, affectionately known as the Gayborhood. Located in the southeast quadrant of Center City, the area is roughly bounded by 10th Street to the east, Juniper St to the west, Walnut St to the north, and Lombard Street to the south. Many of the three- and four-story rowhouses date back into the 19th Century, but have been updated with contemporary bars, restaurants, lounges, and shops. The area is extremely convenient to public transit, with Market East Station and the city's subways within two blocks. One of the liveliest areas of the Philadelphia, the Gayborhood is diverse, attractive, and very approachable.
