El Vez
[Restaurant - Mexican Cuisine]
121 S 13th St
Philadelphia
|
Multicolored mosaics, illuminated murals, circular velvet-upholstered booths, Charo-faced bar stools, and tricycle-bound guacamole mixing stations lend the restaurant an instant atmosphere of whimsy and fun. Patrons order house-made chips, salsa and margaritas during first come, first served waits at the round bar. Sip slowly, the weekend-evening wait is easily an hour. Service is spotty. Fancified Mexican fare arrives family-style. Small plates are just as good--if not better--than pricier main courses. Order fresh and light mahi mahi tacos, delicately delicious rare tuna toastadas, inventive takes on pico de gallo, and splurge on the made-to-order guac. The spicy, tall chopped salad has grilled corn, chayote and almonds--it's tasty, if a tad salty. At lunch, try tacos and tortas. If you must order an entree, get the tender beef shoulder with tricolor salsas. Best big dessert goes to a giant cup of coffee mousse topped with Kahlua foam.
