If you’re going to do it, do it right!

Executive Director of PhillyGayCalendar

For those who don’t know – now you do, I am a Libra and unfortunately for you we are very
observant. I’m sick and tired of folks making fashion additions or omissions without following ALL
the necessary protocols of that change. Chile, if you’re going to do it, do it right. My observations,
criticisms, and suggestions are not just for entertainment or to offend anyone; however, they are
made in hopes of improving your quality of life by at least 2 points. The following are on the top of
my list titled “If you’re going to do it, do it right!” As usual, I hope you heed some of my advice, if
not all, they are made to only help – not hinder.

  1. If you must wear a weave, whether male or female, please make sure it looks like your hair – not
a weave. Remember to hide those tracks, blend well, and comb and brush periodically throughout
the day. If you cannot handle all that, then maybe a weave is not for you try a wig, and professionally
    done extensions are always nice.
  2. If you’re a man and must carry a “man-purse” (which I believe there is no such thing – a purse is
a purse), don’t carry any ole’ man-purse. Upgrade yourself. Invest in something nice and please, not
too trendy. Doesn’t a brief case or a messenger bag sound like a good idea?
  3. If your pocket can only afford generic sneakers, which I completely understand, please do not
purchase the ugliest pair in existence. You know what I mean! Shop around. You deserve it. Just
because they’re generic does not mean they have to be unstylish. There are places such as Steve &
Barry’s, Bare Feet, Foot Locker, or even Payless that have a lot to choose from with reasonable
    prices.
  4. Suspenders are definitely trendy and perhaps necessary and can certainly make or break an outfit.
Please be careful. Do not wear any color that doesn’t match your outfit (fashion statement or not
don’t do it) and do not pull the suspenders too high and make your pants look like high-waters. And
sadly I feel obligated to mention, although I consider this common knowledge, only wear suspenders
with slacks! If I see you with a skirt, shorts, capris, etc. and suspenders on, I cannot guarantee I will
    hold my opinion to myself.
  5. When purchasing a blazer or a suit, try investing in having it tapered and tailored. Anyone can
appreciate a nice fit; besides, it makes the blazer or suit more flattering. If you pick up a blazer from
Goodwill and spend $20 or even $30 to get it tailored then you’ve spent less than half of what
anyone else has spent on one from Express or H&M and yours will fit better. To those of you that
don’t know what that word means – do yourself a favor – look it up then make an appointment for
the nearest salon to get your roots done because you will need the professional help.
  6. Should you decide to wear color contacts, regardless of fashion or necessity, please please please
wear a color that compliments your skin tone and meshes well with your original eye color. I must
tell you it is totally scary when I see someone with two tone eyes!
  7. If you’re going to color your hair, please make sure you maintain that color and keep your hair
healthy. There’s nothing worse than a beautiful color with nasty split ends and lack of shine. To my
man-made blonde bombshells…maintain your roots! Invest in a little extra dye to complete your
make over by coloring your eyebrows. It’s ok to be forged, but please go the extra mile to ensure no
one else can so easily point out your idiosyncrasy.
  8. So you decided to lock your hair…Great! Now make sure you are up to par with touch-ups,
neatness, and shine. Whoopi has already adopted the messy dreads look, so America does not need
and/or want anyone else looking as she. Wonder 8 works “wonders” for keeping a healthy luster and
there are a number of organic waxes, rinses and moisturizers that can be purchased at any hair care
store to keep up with your style between washes.
  9. Goatees are cool and even debonair. I’m sure most would agree. Just remember to groom it, as
well as, the hair on your head. Too many times have I seen a well kept goatee and a desperate need
for a haircut and vice versa. When you cut your hair – groom your goatee. When you dye your hair
    – dye your goatee. Got it? Cool.
  10. So you finally decided to go natural and rocking that bold Afro? Great…once again! Please be
sure to get a shape-up, trim those ends, and comb it daily. Avoid the dry look. Natural does not mean
nasty. Keep your mane shiny. Rock your fro proudly with glam and a great manicuring mechanism.
  11. Think twice about where you want that tattoo or piercing. Do not get either if you do not
anticipate on maintaining it as advised by that scary looking fella who did it. I could not express to
you how gross it is to see ooze and puss coming out of piercing…major turn off! Additionally, think
three times about the location of said tattoo or piercing, i.e., do not get a tattoo on your neck and
expect to be the first-runner up for that blue collar job you always wanted. Don’t blame “The
    Man”…blame yourself.
  12. To my ladies, if you’re going to cut you’re hair into a short style please remember to maintain
so that it looks at close as possible to the day you left the hairdresser. Keep it trimmed, neat, and
curled, if applicable. Treat yourself better by keeping up with your new hair-doo and not walking
around looking like a shaggy dog.

As you can see, most of my criticisms and suggestions listed above arises from management of some
type of change versus’ an actual change. Slow to catching the point?? In laymen terms, do not make
a drastic change if you cannot keep up with the maintenance. Some (or even most) fashion changes
are permanent or will not faded immediately, i.e., hair color, piercing/tattoos, hair locking, so think
about it before doing it. You may not realize it, but something so simple as dying you hair or getting
a weave may take few minutes for results, however, it may significantly affect your life and decisions
made thereafter. Think about…not limited to, career, time management, type of people attracted to
you, and even your personality. Don’t do anything you may regret and remember… If you’re going
to do it, do it right!

Thanks for reading! Peace & Love…and Happy Holidays!
