Have you ever heard the story of the Two-Headed Folk Monster? Does it sound scary?
Well, it’s not scary, but maybe you should be scared if you don’t have tickets to The Tin Angel on October 11th to see the dynamic duo Steph Hayes and Adam Brodsky.
Starting off the folk frenzy will be Steph Taylor and The State of. Not to be confused with Steph Hayes, Steph Taylor and The State of includes a female drummer Nabedi Osorio in addition to Taylor. The two have been confused before, “Steph and I have been on the same touring circuit for years and have often been confused as each other. Being a touring ‘out’ singer-songwriter, you quickly become acquainted with the community of like minded musicians, and it was with a sigh of relief that I discovered I was being confused with someone so fantastic.”
This will be Steph Taylor and the State of’s first time playing in Philly. Taylor says, “I still haven’t met her (Steph Hayes) in person or heard her live, so being a part of this special night is extra exciting and certainly feels like a circle completed. Even more so, this will be our first time playing in Philly and we are so honored to be opening for Philly’s beloved Steph Hayes.”
With keyboard and drums Steph Taylor and The State of have great licks and infectious riffs. You can hear them at Steph Taylor and The State of and they even cover a Bjork song!
The male half of the Two Headed Folk Monster, Adam Brodsky, is coming out of a four year hiatus for this Tin Angel show. Hayes and Brodsky have known each other for 13 years, “We met at ‘Name That Bar’ back in 1995, a crappy basement below 3rd and South Street. She was just a shy little girl then who couldn’t even look people in the eye when she played. We liked each other’s songs. I had a song called ‘If you’d come back to me,’ which everyone calls ‘the fuck you on a featherbed song,'” Brodsky says. “Steph requested it by its real name. Which was very cool.”
When asked his favorite song on the new Steph Hayes album, Brodsky answers, “Tough to say… with a gun to my head I’d probably pick ‘Am I moving Forward’ or possibly ‘Club Drugs.'”
The Two Headed Folk Monster event at Tin Angel will be presented under the auspices of Brodsky’s record label, Permanent Records, “I have this little record label and because its not my only source of income, I am able to be very choosy about which records and musicians I will sign. The theory is, anyone who likes my songs should probably have a good chance of liking anything on the label. I stand behind every release which I think there are 14 now.”
Brodsky clearly enjoys playing with Hayes and the relationship seems to be mutually beneficial, “Normally you play alone and you’re usually on a bill with a bunch of strangers or acquaintances. Playing a show with her, trading songs back and forth on a stage has been really wonderful and not just for us. In general we’ve heard from the crowds is classic gestalt. She and I riffing on each other and adding harmonies where applicable has really been entertaining; for us and for the crowds.”
Playing together also can influence their set lists Brodsky added.
Brodsky’s music is the folkiest. You can check his sound out at Adam Brodsky.
The Two Headed Folk Monster party is also a celebration of Steph Hayes’ newest release, recorded live in March at Cheeks Studio. Local Philadelphians have been under the magnetic gaze of Steph Hayes for years now. Organizer of FUSE and Sapphire Fund Board Member Corinne’s favorite Steph Hayes song is “Bottles of God.” Corrine says, “That song is so simple and smart.”
Corrine continues, “I saw Steph recently at Sisterspace with Bitch and Voices of Africa. Everyone was just hanging on her every word. It was amazing!”
Steph Hayes’ myspace boasts new encouraging comments from fans everyday. One anonymous fan had to say this about her, “Steph Hayes is clearly a driven person and her work reflects that. I love her music and her style.”
You can find Steph Hayes fans in every corner of Philadelphia homo or not, Sara Sherr my favorite straight person and hostess of Sugar Town states, “Steph Hayes is hot and a very charismatic performer.” Sugar Town is a monthly party for female artists and DJ’s.
Steph Hayes has been involved in many musical projects including Stargazer Lily and Shooting Ropes, Slo Mo and a project with Lotsix. Sherr on Stargazer Lily, “I do know that at one point they were one of the highest drawing local female acts in town but I unfortunately never go to book them for Sugar Town. I am a big Shooting Ropes fan. I always had fun booking them and I like the chemistry between Steph and Lotsix.” The word is that Stargazer Lily has a show coming up in December.
Steph Taylor and the State of opening for the Two Headed Folk Monster sounds mysterious enough but you should end the mystery. The only scary thing about this monster is if you don’t go see it on October 11, 2008 at The Tin Angel.
