Got ‘MILK’?

Miss Information sees al and knows all. I’m a gossip queen that keeps your fellow Philly homos informed!

Hello my little dahlings, Miss Information is back in action after a little hiatus. She will admit, she’s had some work done, some things tightened, all in the name of being fabulous for you all, but now it’s back to being the diva that brings you all things gay in Philadelphia.

Miss Information just got back from from a screening of the new movie ‘Milk’ staring the adorable Sean Penn as the first openly gay elected official in the country, Harvey Milk. Now many don’t know who Harvey Milk is….and if you don’t – shame on you! Miss Information is always saddened to hear that many know every DJ spinning at Pure every week, but don’t know the names of the major activists in the gay rights movement…the movement that allowed you to be out enough to go to Pure every week. You should know names like Stonewall, Barbara Gittings and Harvey Milk.

The movie was a very sweet and touching true story of a young man that started a movement in the Castro district of San Francisco. With horrible homophobic opposition from the police, his neighbors and that bitch of an orange juice queen Anita Bryant (that’s another name you should know, but for different reasons) he faced an uphill battle. He wasn’t running a campaign, he was running a movement.

With the help of his super sexy ex- lover played by James Franco (you know, that hottie in Spiderman 3 that played the Green Goblins son), and his new lover, new to the scene Diego Luna, Milk takes office and starts making a different. That is, until those nasty birds of the religious right step in to pass a law firing any openly homosexual teacher. You will just have to see the movie to see what happens, and see the compelling ending to ‘Milk’

This movie comes at a very poignant time, my little ones, as we have a president elect that ran not a campaign but a movement …towards change. The movie also mirrors the recent fight for rights with the passage of Prop 8.

So what did Miss Information take away from this movie …besides the cute usher from the back? The movement – that started 40 years ago to give us rights – it wasn’t about the religious right, or the conservatives, or that Anita Bryant bitch that no one liked. It’s about us! That’s right my dears – US! It has been proven time and time again that people that know a gay person will overwhelmingly vote in our favor. Harvey Milked ask in the movie…come out! We all have parents, friends, coworkers – many of which don’t know we are gay – and many of which vote. If by coming out to them we can change their vote – then do it! Oh well all have our little excuses, Miss Information knows it’s hard, but sometimes we have to do the hard thing (okay that made me giggle a little) and we have to be a little uncomfortable when it comes to fighting for our rights!

Homework time! Here is your assignment my happy Philly homos.

1) Go see Harvey Milk! Click HERE for show times when it comes out Nov 26.

2) Come out to someone you know. Hell, even if it’s your mailman, send a pink letter and come out! It’s never easy at first but trust Miss Information, it get’s easier every time!

3) Talk to your straight friends. Find a straight friend and talk to them about our issues. A lot of time they just don’t know, and are too uncomfortable to ask one of us, so start the conversation!

That’s all for now, my little dears. But don’t worry, Miss Information will be back with more sage advice – and as always, any questions you might have, drop a tinkle and I will help you out like the good fairy I am!
