G.B.F.

Executive Director of PhillyGayCalendar

G.B.F. directed by Darren Stein and written by George Northy is, on the surface a breezy comedy, about three high school divas vying to accessorize their wardrobes with the only openly gay student in the entire school. However, underneath all the bubblegum colors and 80s-like fashion, this movie has a thoughtful message; it couches the serious topic of society’s penchant for stereotypes in a very funny story about our attitudes toward others’ differences. G.B.F. ultimately illustrates how ridiculous it is to categorize people.

The movie does lag a bit midway through, but the cast, including Michael Willett, Paul Iocono and the glorious Megan Mullally, is so strong that they kept my attention until the plot picked up again. As a matter of fact, Mullally is worth the price of the ticket. Her single-mom parenting takes on a whole new dimension when she attempts at first, to anticipate and then encourage her son’s coming out. If you are looking for some good belly laughs and maybe a lot more, this is your movie!
