Sex 4 Sale: My First Experience Filming Porn

Executive Director of PhillyGayCalendar

NOTE: This story was originally posted in November 2012, but we felt it fit perfectly in our 'Sex for Sale' series

I sat there on the plane thinking, "Well, there's no going back now". According to the flight attendant, my flight is just over five hours and being there is a three hour time difference between Philadelphia and Los Angeles, I'd still be arriving early in the evening. Why am I flying across the country? I'm f*cking. Yes, you read that correctly. I am an adult film model.

You may notice I didn't say "porn star". I didn't say that for two reasons. The first being that I am brand new to the industry and the second is that you have had to make a name for yourself in this industry before you are a "star". Star status is reserved for those like Brent Everrett, Brent Corrigan, Pierre Fitch, ChiChi Larue, and that's just to name a few.

I moved a lot growing up but spent the majority of my youth in Idaho. I was a country boy who lived on a ranch, rode horses, herded cows, bailed hay, went hunting, etc. I played sports in high school, graduated, came out when I was 19, went to college for year, before deciding I was better suited in the military. I joined the Army in November 2007, served as a medic for 3 years before getting caught in the cross fire of the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell and discharged which is a whole other story itself.

I've had an interest in the adult film industry for about four years and finally started applying to various companies and agencies. I received a few words from some places but nothing ever came of it. One day I sat down with a friend, and with some liquid courage, we came up with names and started doing live cam shows. No, I did not choose my name from a street or childhood pet, I just chose one I liked. Our popularity got the attention of companies like TLA and Swiss Navy Lube. Eventually I decided to apply with a modeling agency. I submitted stats and pictures and within a week I received a phone call, and three weeks later my flights and first three scenes were booked. And today with three scenes under my belt (no pun intended) let me tell you, making fake sex look great for you is harder than having great real sex.

Before ever filming we are sent call sheets explaining the scene, who we are filming with, whether we are a top or bottom, what to expect, what site it's for, what to wear, and all other details. We are never forced to do anything we don't want to do. Arriving on set I was nervous but pleased to see it's a simple set up, three stationary HD cameras, one mobile video camera, the videographer, the director, my scene partner, and myself. No big crews, nobody there who doesn't need to be, and they do everything to welcome you and make you feel relaxed. We filmed from a beautiful penthouse in Hollywood. Condoms, lube, towels, toys, cleaning supplies, male enhancement pills, were all provided by the company. On average, we shoot between 3-5 hours. There's the opening scene, transitions, each position is filmed for a consecutive five minutes from every angle.

We break after each position, film a transition from position to position, and stop to take photo stills. It doesn't sound like a lot but holding yourself in uncomfortable positions while faking noises and faces to get the right shots can be stressful. And then finally we end it by filming "the money shot". If a model is unable to perform adequately his pay can be docked. Fortunately, I haven't had to experience that but I do know that if you can't deliver your time in this industry is going to be very short. After we wrap up, the footage and photos are sent to be edited and could take months before they are actually released.

Outside of work, most of the models tend to get along though there is the occasional drama. We go out or hang out together, some do sleep together, but being in the industry doesn't mean we hook up with everything that hits us up on Grindr. That last one especially applies to me since I am also happily partnered. It's understood that it's just a job, scene partners are coworkers, and despite what I do for work some of us do maintain fully functional and normal relationships.

Even after all this, I've only begun to break the ice. It's not all parties, sex, and popularity. It's a job that truly does take time and effort. But then again, I know that these aren't exactly the things you think about when you sit down with your laptop and tissues and navigate yourself to your favorite porn site(s). After all, we do this all for you, the viewer and everyone loves a happy ending.
