Dissolution of Philly Pride Presents Press Conference

Abdul-Aliy Muhammad, founder of Black & Brown Workers Co-op, spoke today outside of City Hall in Philadelphia about the need for a new outlook on Philly Pride.

Approved Points of Unity
Date: Thursday, June 24, 2021

A. We agree that PRIDE must facilitate treating each other and our community with love, respect, honor, and care.

B. We agree that no cops should be at PRIDE.

a. We will not communicate, collaborate, or coordinate with the police.

C. We agree to uphold the history of PRIDE.

a. We will uplift and center the experiences of those on the frontline (i.e. and others) Marsha P Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Storme DeLarverie, Ms. Major, and others.
b. We will expand what we mean by histories of pride and upraising for Queer folks, particularly Black and Brown people
– We will hold these activities in sacred spaces.
c. We will use educational tools to uphold this history

D. We agree that PRIDE must be about community and not big corporations.

a. We will strive to prioritize local community, Philly-born people, Philly residents and local talent
b. We will provide consideration for businesses that are part of the community
c. We will strive to not accept money from organizations that are not in alignment with our stated values

E. We agree that PRIDE in Philadelphia must be a Black and Brown LGBTQI-led event. This reflects the demography of our city.

F. We agree that PRIDE must be accessible to disabled communities.
a. We will pay attention to the accessibility needs of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing communities

G. We agree that PRIDE must be accessible to people who speak English as a second language. We agree that PRIDE must be a sanctuary space for undocumented communities.

H. We agree that PRIDE must be affordable or free.

I. We agree that PRIDE should fairly compensate labor and talent apart from pre-established consensual volunteering.

a. PRIDE will clarify at the start of your relationship to the organization whether your role will be a volunteer or compensated.
b. We agree to review our volunteer and compensation decisions to ensure that marginalized communities are not overlooked for compensation.

J. We agree that PRIDE must disrupt Rape culture by making clear that consent violations will not be tolerated.

K. We agree that PRIDE must embrace Sex-Workers, Klnksters, and outcasts,

L. We agree that PRIDE should work from a harm-reduction framework

a. PRIDE should be committed to free education and resources for drug-users
b. We agree that PRIDE will provide spaces for our sober communities

c. PRIDE should include ensuring the availability of free condoms, lube, and other safer sex supplies

M. We agree that PRIDE should utilize tools of safety planning (crisis mediation model) and medic use, Including mental health first-aid.

N. We agree that PRIDE is explicitly inclusive of Trans people, Fat people, immigrants, Muslim folks, people who are HIV+, Black women/femmes. We will not tolerate transantagonism, Fat-phobia, Xenophobia, Islamophobia, HIV-phobia, misogyny, misogynoir, femmephobia, or an otherwise unlisted manifestation of white supremacy, patriarchy, Capitalism or oppressive societal norms.

O. We agree that PRIDE must create sacred space for our young people and elders and that our elders and young people will lead and create these spaces.

P. We agree that PRIDE must center Black, Latinx, Indigenous people in our storytelling at its core.

Q. We agree that PRIDE must center specifically Queer and Trans forms of art and culture.

a. We will include the ballroom history
b. We will include Drag

R. We agree that PRIDE must support community control of HIV prevention in Black and Latinx trans and queer communities by Black and Latinx people, not white-run organizations.
