For the fans of The Who, don’t miss The Who’s rock musical Tommy at the Algonquin Arts Theatre in Manasquan, New Jersey. You have only until August 21.

 

Tommy is a 1969 rock opera by the Who. It was later staged into a rock musical which appeared on Broadway in 1993. This Tony and Grammy winning work was also a 1975 film by Ken Russell. 

 

It is rarely performed and this production is a real treat. Tommy Walker is played with exciting panache by 20-year-old Matthew Johnson. Jax Terry is Tommy aged 10, and Jake Ward plays him at 4. They all give memorable performances. The supporting cast includes many theatre professionals as well as high school seniors, college students, and aspiring thespians, The live orchestra performs in a covered pit below the stage. Bravo to them all and to conductor Mark Megill.

 

If you’ve never been to the Algonquin Theatre, you owe it to yourself to visit this lovely theatre. There is plenty of parking, and easily accessible to those who are movement challenged. 

 

The Algonquin’s Broadway series for the coming season will include Man of la Mancha, A Christmas Story, Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound, Wait Until Dark, Kinky Boots, and Hello Dolly.
