The Legend of Georgia McBride
Casey is young, broke, and out of options. His landlord is knocking, his wife has just announced that she is pregnant, and his gig as an Elvis impersonator at a run-down small-town Florida bar has come to an abrupt end. When the owner replaces the Elvis act with a B-level drag show, Casey lands backstage in a world he knows nothing about, and discovers a talent, and a self, he never expected.
What makes Matthew López’s comedy land is that the drag is never the punchline. Director Max Segarnick treats Casey’s transformation as a genuine artistic awakening, and the result is loud, funny, warm, and generous, with plenty of sequins along the way.
The five-person cast is led by Nolan Maher as Casey, with LaPorscha Rodgers as his wife Jo, Randy Rice as veteran drag performer Miss Tracy Mills, Randino as Rexy and Jason, and Chas Thomas as Eddie, the bar owner who sets the whole thing in motion.
