Friday, February 14, from 7:00 to 10 p.m.
Independence Visitor Center, 6th & Market Streets, Liberty View Ballroom
The Equality Ball will take place in the backdrop of Independence Hall and Liberty Bell Pavilion. Same-sex and straight couples will celebrate love with wedding cake, tastings from 12 Philadelphia restaurants and caterers, open bar, live music/dancing, festivities and take home Valentine's souvenirs.
Montgomery County Register of Wills Bruce Hanes and defrocked United Methodist Reverend Frank Schaefer will receive the Equality Award. Pennsylvania same-sex couples, who received a marriage license in Montgomery County will be in attendance.
The Equality Ball benefits Palladino v. Corbett, a federal marriage recognition lawsuit. A motion for summary judgment has been filed. A decision by U.S. District Judge Mary McLaughlin is expected in late spring 2014.
Equality Forum Executive Director, Malcolm Lazin - Lazin is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2005 Creative Leadership in Human Rights Award of the National Education Association (NEA); 2006 Distinguished Alumnus Award of Lebanon Valley College; and is a 2007 Prime Mover of the Hunt Alternatives Fund, which annually selects eight national nonprofit leaders who are leading innovative, strategic and progressive movements.
Montgomery County Register of Wills, Bruce Hanes - On July 23, 2013, Hanes announced that his office would issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. On September 12, 2013, Judge Dan Pellegrini issued an order to cease the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Pennsylvania.
Because of his public support of same-sex marriage, Hanes has been removed from his volunteer position at Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls, effective September 17, 2013.
United Methodist, Rev. Frank Schaefer - A United Methodist minister who was convicted in a Pennsylvania church trial of breaking church law by officiating at his son's same-sex marriage, a case that rekindled debate over the policy of the nation's largest mainline Protestant denomination.
Equality Forum, a national and international LGBT civil rights organization with an educational focus, coordinates LGBT History Month, undertakes high-impact initiatives, produces documentary films, and presents the largest annual national and international LGBT civil rights summit.
