First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia
Type: Religious
We are Unitarian Universalists. Ours is an intentionally diverse religious community. We seek to be guided by the wisdom and experience of people of all genders, races, theologies, colors, classes, ages and sexual orientations. We are a wonderful mix of straight, gay, lesbian, trans, bi, young, old (and in between), and people of all colors. We have a great children's religious education program, so if you have kids, they'll be welcome too. Unitarian Universalism is a progressive, liberal faith. Our religious movement today is characterized by a commitment to diversity in community, respect for the individual's path to religious truth, and by a dedication to social justice as a means of living out our religious values. Our Seven Principles are to covenant and promote: 1. The inherent worth and dignity of every person. 2. Justice, equity and compassion in human relations. 3. Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations. 4. A free and responsible search for truth and meaning. 5. The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large. 6. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all. 7. Respect for the interdependent web of all existence, of which we are a part. The Unitarian-Universalist approach to spirituality is fundamentally different from religion based on the idea of "creed" or a static concept of "revelation." We do not say that life's ultimate truth has been revealed in a particular scripture. We say that together we must seek to understand the meaning of our lives. We gather in a sense of wonder before the mystery of life. In our search we have the voices and visions of every period and place in the record of human experience from which to draw. We have the accumulated wisdom of humankind- reason, intuition, the arts and sciences, and our own life experience. We take the best of the teachings of all the great religions, as well as many other sources of inspirational writings, such as Walt Whitman, Gandhi, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., or the Sufi Mystics, to name just a few sources. Please join us on Sundays at 11 a.m. in our Frank Furness-designed sanctuary at 2125 Chestnut Street. We believe you'll be glad you came to worship with us; we know we'll be glad you did.

Frontrunners Philadelphia

In 1983 a small group of gay runners in Philadelphia decided to organize and promote running for the gay and lesbian community. Following in the footsteps of similar clubs in New York and San Francisco, Frontrunners Philadelphia was born. We affiliate with these clubs, other local clubs including Washington DC and Baltimore, and International Frontrunners organization as well Frontrunners clubs in major cities throughout the globe.

In the last 30 years, the club has consistently served as a space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender runners as well as our friends and allies of all identities to meet, pound the pavement, and enjoy each otherís company. Our regular run begins at 9:30 am on Saturday mornings in front of Lloyd Hall, at the southern end of Boathouse Row on the Schuylkill River; the address is 1 Boathouse Row. Most of us run 5 miles, but some start earlier and run farther, and others walk or jog a shorter distance. We try to finish at the same time so that we can have brunch together at a nearby diner. The club also fields a book group, Sunday long runs, Monday evening runs, movie nights, various seasonal and holiday-related parties and gatherings, teams for local races, and various other events/activities of membersí choosing.

We believe God's love is to all people.
