Gunnar Montana makes Cider Nog

Executive Director of PhillyGayCalendar

The infamous and Philly favorite Gunnar Montana shows us how to make some holiday favorites.

Homemade Apple Cider

10 large apples, quartered
1/2 orange, halved
cinnamon sticks
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. whole allspice
whole nutmeg
1/2 c. packed brown sugar

  1. In a large stockpot over medium heat, add apples, oranges, spices, and brown sugar. Cover with water by at least 2”. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, 2 hours.
  2. Remove orange halves, then use a potato masher or wooden spoon to mash apples. Return to a simmer and let simmer uncovered for 1 hour more.
  3. Strain through a fine mesh strainer, pressing on solids with a wooden spoon to squeeze all juices out. Discard solids.
  4. Serve apple cider warm.

HOT CIDER NOG

  • 2 cups half and half
  • 1/2 cup milk, 2% or whole
  • 1 1/4 cups apple cider
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, plus more for topping
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • whipped cream for topping
  • cinnamon sticks
  • apple slices
Place the half and half, milk, cider, eggs, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a large saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat while whisking constantly (so you don’t have scrambled eggs!) for 15 to 20 minutes, until the nog thickens slightly and can easily coat the back of a wooden spoon. Remove from the heat but continue to whisk for another minute or two.
