The infamous and Philly favorite Gunnar Montana shows us how to make some holiday favorites.
Homemade Apple Cider
10 large apples, quartered
1/2 orange, halved
4 cinnamon sticks
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. whole allspice
1 whole nutmeg
1/2 c. packed brown sugar
- In a large stockpot over medium heat, add apples, oranges, spices, and brown sugar. Cover with water by at least 2”. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer, covered, 2 hours.
- Remove orange halves, then use a potato masher or wooden spoon to mash apples. Return to a simmer and let simmer uncovered for 1 hour more.
- Strain through a fine mesh strainer, pressing on solids with a wooden spoon to squeeze all juices out. Discard solids.
- Serve apple cider warm.
HOT CIDER NOG
- 2 cups half and half
- 1/2 cup milk, 2% or whole
- 1 1/4 cups apple cider
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg, plus more for topping
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- whipped cream for topping
- cinnamon sticks
- apple slices
Place the half and half, milk, cider, eggs, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a large saucepan. Heat over medium-low heat while whisking constantly (so you don’t have scrambled eggs!) for 15 to 20 minutes, until the nog thickens slightly and can easily coat the back of a wooden spoon. Remove from the heat but continue to whisk for another minute or two.
