Twin geniuses Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger wrote the smash hit musical Dreamgirls, winning six Tony Awards in 1982. It has been produced many times on stage and screen starring Jennifer Hudson, Jennifer Holiday, And Beyonce, among many others. The McCarter Theatre Center brought a fantastic production of Dreamgirls from Goodspeed Musicals which premiered in Connecticut in November 2023. It is a fantastic production, with an outstanding cast reprising their roles to magical effect. The only downside is that Dreamgirls closes March 24, 2024. It ran for a few weeks, which is much too short a run.
Saint Aubyn played Jimmy (James Thunder) Early, to exceptional acclaim from the audience. His dancing, singing, humorous timing, and all-around greatness marks him as a true star in the making. Jos N. Banks was a debonair yet earnest C.C. (Claridge Conrad) White. Other talented cast members included, but by no means were limited to, Robert Cornelius as Marty, and Evan Tyrone Martin as Curtis Taylor, Jr. Trejah Bostic was a thrilling Effie Melody White, who brought down the house with her scorching renditions of the showstopping “And I Am Telling You, I’m Not Going,” “I Am Changing,” and “One Night Only.”
The production was spectacular, with astonishing set design, lighting, costumes, wigs, and spunk. Bravo! to the cast and to the McCarter.
