Tavern on Camac Reopens with Bold Flavors and Queer Legacy

Executive Director of PhillyGayCalendar
After a year-long hiatus, Tavern on Camac has reopened, and Philadelphia’s Gayborhood is buzzing. More than just a bar, TOC has always been a cornerstone of LGBTQ+ culture in the city — but now, it’s also emerging as one of the Gayborhood’s most exciting dining destinations. With a completely renovated kitchen and dining room, and a new chef at the helm, the iconic venue is raising the bar on what it means to dine in a space rooted in community and history.

A Fresh Face in the Kitchen

The new menu is the creation of Chef Zander Gatta, a South Philly native who brings a wealth of experience from his time at The Palm AC, The Palm Las Vegas, and three years at Royal Boucherie, where he climbed the ranks to Executive Chef. Gatta’s vision for Tavern on Camac is clear: to keep the menu seasonal, locally sourced, and inventive, while honoring the welcoming, neighborhood spirit that TOC is known for. “I’m committed to keeping the T.O.C. menu seasonal and as local as possible,” Gatta explains, emphasizing his dedication to using local growers and purveyors.

Starters That Set the Tone

The new offerings start with a variety of small plates that combine creativity with familiar comfort. Diners can kick off their meal with a bright and refreshing Sorrel Salad featuring watercress, goat cheese, cherry, toasted hazelnut, and tarragon vinaigrette ($14), or try the Snapper Crudo, a summery dish with watermelon, serrano peppers, lime, and olive oil ($17). For something richer, there’s Chicken Liver Mousse with sour cherry mostarda and cornichon ($15), or the indulgent Bison, Pork Belly, and Pickled Shrimp Sliders ($8 each).

Old favorites also make a return, including the beloved Tavern Burger topped with gruyere, caramelized onion, lettuce, tomato, and special sauce ($21), and a hearty Fried Mushroom Sandwich featuring portobello mushrooms, red onion jam, lettuce, and lemon aioli ($14).

Show-Stopping Entrées

The entrée selection is designed to satisfy a range of palates. Highlights include Mussels & Shrimp in Brodo with tomato, fennel, parsley, and a slice of locally sourced Mighty Bread sourdough ($17), and a flavorful Half Roasted Chicken with roasted potato, watercress, and chicken jus ($21). For those in the mood for a true indulgence, the menu features a crisp Veal Milanese with arugula, fresh herbs, lemon, and olive oil ($55), a 12 oz. New York Strip ($42), a massive 18 oz. Ribeye ($55), and a juicy 14 oz. Double Cut Pork Chop ($28).

Sweets Worth Staying For

No meal at TOC is complete without dessert. The Crème Brûlée, infused with chamomile and honey ($9), offers a delicate twist on the classic, while the indulgent Brownie Sundae with Bassetts Vanilla Ice Cream and walnut syrup ($11) is the perfect finish to a hearty meal.

A Revamped Space for a Revitalized Experience

The menu isn’t the only thing that’s changed. The restaurant underwent major renovations, including a fully reoriented kitchen and a complete overhaul of the dining room’s fixtures and surfaces. Upstairs, the Ascend Lounge has expanded its dance floor and upgraded its lighting and sound system, blending TOC’s historic charm with modern amenities.

More Than a Meal

Tavern on Camac has always been more than a place to eat — it’s a place where the LGBTQ+ community can gather, celebrate, and connect. As the city’s longest continually operating gay establishment (since 1925), TOC’s history runs deep, even occupying a building that once played a role in the Underground Railroad. Its reopening is a testament to resilience, community, and the power of preserving queer spaces.

Whether you’re stopping by for a casual weeknight meal, a pre-show dinner before the piano bar, or a celebratory night out, TOC’s new dining experience offers something for everyone — delicious food in a space that honors Philadelphia’s LGBTQ+ legacy.

Tavern on Camac is open daily from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., with the kitchen serving until 11 p.m. Come hungry, leave inspired.
