Margarita, directed by Dominique Cardona and Laurie Colbert, deals with many relevant societal issues. The movie surprised me because the sexual orientation of Margarita, played by Nicola Correia Damude, is, as it should be, just part of her. Margarita is a nanny for a couple with a fourteen-year-old daughter who admires her. She has good friends and a girlfriend she wants to marry.

The most compelling part of the film is that Margarita is an undocumented worker in Canada. There are some funny moments in the film, but for the most part, the topic of illegal workers is approached from different perspectives in a serious manner. The plot is at its best when the characters realize how invaluable Margarita is and how much they need her, but also what an intelligent, motivated woman she is and how much more she can accomplish if given the chance. The plot is slow in a few spots; I would have preferred some editing of scenes that show the characters thinking. However, the way the film deals with sexuality as a non-issue is refreshing.
