Foodies, rejoice: two new gayborhood eateries have opened their doors, both perfect to satisfy some chilly comfort-food cravings.
Go Popcorn (www.letsgopopcorn.com), located next to the rather popular Pennsylvania 6 restaurant, just opened it’s doors this past weekend. Once you enter the beautiful storefront, located at 112 South 12th Street, you’ll be surrounded by a quirky circus-inspired environment and the smell of, well, you guessed it…warm freshly-popped popcorn. But don’t think butter and cheddar are the only options (although both are available): how does Brown Butter Caramel, Chocolate Pretzel, Spicy Bacon Cheddar, and Dill Pickle sound? I left with a bag of Peanut Butter Cup (quite addictive, to be honest). With a menu that rotates on a weekly basis, and the ability to purchase single bags for snacking or large tins, it’s a great addition to have in the neighborhood (just make sure you have plenty of dental floss at home!).
The recently opened Nomad Pizza (www.nomadpizzaco.com) is a little slice of heaven…literally. The Roman-style pizzeria, located around the corner from Woody’s at 1305 Locust Street, serves up thin-crust pies in a casual, yet warm, environment. The brass-colored oven is stunning, not to mention that a window seat provides for plenty of amazing people watching in the ‘hood. Although there are a plethora of specialty pizzas and salads on the menu, the Margherita di Bufala (buffalo mozzarella pizza) is the quintessential go-to dish. Order one per person, and don’t be shocked when you see the size of the pies; the crust is extremely thin, and, if you share the appetite of my friend and I when we had dinner at Nomad, you won’t have any leftovers! Make sure you save room to enjoy the complementary house-made dark chocolate you’ll get at the end of your meal.
