Stretch It, Pull It, Work It. Yogay

Executive Director of PhillyGayCalendar

I'll be the first to admit I had my reservations about Yoga, it just seemed so fluffy and a waste of my time.  I was always chasing "gay perfection" which to me meant rock hard abs and a beautiful butt, which I thought required hours on a cardio machine and dozens of crunches.  Then I tried Yoga (more aptly named YoGay) at The studio at duross & langel.

"75 glorious minutes of scantily clad, sweaty gay men doing yoga followed by a free 45 minute cocktail social", read the description on the Facebook event invite, they had me at sweaty gay men and sealed the deal with the free cocktails.  I arrived with a beat up, 3 year old yoga mat 20 minutes early to secure my spot in the BACK of the class.  There was no way I was going to be judged by any queen.  The best news is – there was no judgment at all.  The atmosphere was warm and inviting.  Overlooking the busy cross streets 13th and Sansom, the studio was high enough to evade the noise.

We were led by Brandon, a talented instructor with countless years experience. He led us through multiple cycles and I found myself stretching new muscles and cracking joints I didn't know existed.  It felt great, but even better was that I felt my body actually working (and working up a sweat!).  I looked into it, and an average sized man can burn up to 225 calories in an hour of yoga.  I didn't do it for the calorie burn, or the scandalously clad (still wish naked yoga was a thing.)  I did it to try something new, and now I think you should too! Keep an eye on PGC to see when the next yoga sesh is!
