The AmazIng Kreskin at The Rrazz Room

Executive Director of PhillyGayCalendar

The Amazing Kreskin appeared at The Rrazz Room in New Hope Saturday, October 14. Those of us who are of a certain age recall Kreskin from his many television appearances on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and many other talk shows of the era, where he would do, well, amazing things. Kreskin has also appeared on Late Night with David Letterman and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. He reprised one of his entertainments this night with a trick Johnny Carson thought would be impossible: Having a person from the audience shuffle cards behind his back, picking two cards while hidden behind a screen, putting a card in his right back pocket and his left back pocket, then Kreskin guessing what they were before the subject pulled them out of his pocket. Yes, he got both cards right. Amazing!

Kreskin states that he isn’t a psychic, but a mentalist. This night at the Rrazz Room was no different. Kreskin spoke at length about mass hypnosis and crowd manipulation citing Adolf Hitler as a prime example. He also claimed that there is no such thing as hypnosis; that it is only the power of suggestion over susceptible subjects. He proved his point this evening by engaging the audience multiple times. Kreskin first asked the audience to think of an odd number between 10 and 50. He wrote it down. He then asked “Is it 37?” Amazingly, half of the audience raised their hands. When he repeated the same process with an even number, half of the audience raised their hands when he displayed and stated, “Number 46?”

Kreskin was born January 12, 1935, and still appears to be in possession of his faculties and sly wit. He joked about how he “will retire ten months after his death.” He spoke at length about his fear of everyone’s personal information being instantaneously available as it is linked through credit cards and driver’s licenses, there being no more secrets.

For reasons which were unexplained, the 7:30 show started after 8 pm. However, Kreskin did perform for nearly two hours, earning him a hearty round of applause at the end of the evening.

The Rrazz Room has returned to the space it formerly occupied when the hotel was the Ramada. Locals remember it as The Nevermore, when it was an LGBT-themed resort. The newest incarnation of the Rrazz Room is at the Clarion Hotel and Suites, 6426 Lower York Road, New Hope, PA 18938. Future appearances will be comedian Judy Gold December 9, and Tony nominee and American Idol Constantine Maroulis December 16, among many others.
