Announcing the Michael Hinson Mission Grants

Philly Black Pride is excited to announce the Michael Hinson Mission Grants, a program designed to honor the enduring legacy of Michael S. Hinson Jr. These grants aim to support individuals who reflect Michael’s values of compassion, leadership, and dedication to community service.


About Michael S. Hinson Jr.

Michael S. Hinson Jr. was a trailblazing advocate for the Black LGBTQ community in Philadelphia. He was instrumental in founding several key organizations, including Philly Black Gay Pride in 1999 and Colours Organization, which provides services to people of color affected by HIV/AIDS. Michael served as the LGBTQ liaison to former Mayor John Street, where he worked to protect gender identity under the city’s Fair Practices Ordinance. His leadership extended to his role as CEO of SELF, Inc., the largest provider of emergency and transitional housing in Philadelphia, doubling its size and launching innovative programs like “A Way Home” for LGBTQ individuals.

  • Purpose: Support youth, community leaders, and volunteers in Philadelphia.
  • Focus Areas: Academic achievement, advocacy, and community-driven initiatives.
  • Eligibility:
    • Must reside in Philadelphia.
    • Must identify as Black and/or African American.
    • Must be a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Application Deadline: August 18, 2024, at 11:59 PM EST.
  • Application Process:
    • Provide artifacts of academic achievements, investments, or goals.
    • Complete the online application form.

How to Apply:

Visit the Philly Black Pride website to access the application form and submit your entry by the deadline. Awardees will be notified via email and announced on Philly Black Pride’s social media platforms. The recipients will also be spotlighted during OurFest 2024.
