Honey let me tell you, I hate talking politics, but not as much as I hate watching our current administration rapidly encroach on our rights. After seeing Basic Witches (which is now a fully fleshed out, fully spooky musical running one more weekend in Old City) I knew I had to fight more than ever to protect the T in LGBT.
Basic Witches tells the story of 4 (5? 6?) witches fighting to be Supreme on Halloween, but the protagonist of the story is Eddie. They (not him, he or she as the musical points out) is discovering their powers over the arch of the show and with a help of our favorite gender queer gayborhood phanttic (Eric Jaffe), Eddie is able to push themselves forward.
To be honest the show is a solid 9/10, (an easy 10/10 with some sound system tweaking, and I'm only being a stickler because the lyrics are so witty I wanted to hear every single one!)
The stand out of the show is the environment, a dimly lit cabaret setting dominated by a drag runway with tables adorned with spooky artifacts. But also, look at this damn cast!
Eric Jaffe as THE HOST
Bobby Goodrich as Oceana
Miss Elaineous as Westernia
Vincent Celeiro as Davanity
AJ JAckson as Strudella
Brennen Malone as Punkin'
Sav Souza as eddie
Lorenzo Ballesteros as Punkin'
I've followed this show from it's first reading, through fringe and now to a full fledge production at the studio theatre at the Ardent Theatre Hamilton Family Arts Center! So if you're looking for something else to do (Aside from dressing slutty and drinking) this Halloween Weekend… Don't miss this show! (it's about 2 hours long, there's a bar, and you can go out after!)
