Vocal ensemble Chanticleer beguiles the men and women of Princeton

Although retired since 2014, I still relish opportunities to teach, write, and share opinions.
World-renowned and Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer gave a stunning recital at Princeton University on October 12, 2023.

Chanticleer’s program was entitled Music of a Silent World. The composers featured were Kurt Weill, Majel Connery, Ayanna Woods, Ann Ronell, Heinrich Isaac, Max Reger, Joni Mitchell, Hoagy Carmichael, Frank Churchill, Irving Berlin, and The Weather by Clyde Lawrence, Gracie Lawrence, Jon Bellion, Jonathan Koh, Jordan Cohen, and arranged by Vineel Garisa Mahal. The Princeton University Glee Club, directed by Gabriel Crouch, joined Chanticleer in performing several works.

In this eclectic evening of music ranging from the Renaissance to Today, the ensemble sang impeccably, beguiling the audience with their excellence. Several times during the program, artists took to the microphone to deliver erudite and amusing explanations of the next song. These chats were as astonishing and delightful as the songs which followed them.

The ensemble of twelve men performed on several occasions on the Princeton University campus over several days. Chanticleer worked with the Princeton University Glee Club, participated in the annual Chamber Jam and a Live Music Meditation in addition to tonight’s concert, the first of Princeton University’s 130th season. Their Music Director, Tim Keeler, Princeton alumnus 2011, not only arranged several songs, directed his men with brilliance, and also stunned us with his erudition and charm during the pre-concert talk. Named for the “clear singing” cock in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer was founded in San Francisco in 1978. Since then, the ensemble has sold more than one million recordings, and performed thousands of concerts. For more on their CDs, DVDs, and downloads, visit www.Chanticleer.org . This was their first appearance at Princeton’s Concerts.

This Princeton audience eagerly acclaimed the twelve men after each incredible song styling, and went positively wild when the published program ended. The audience rose to its feet for a prolonged standing ovation, which recalled the artists for several returns until an encore was given to the appreciative house.

In all, a stunning local debut by Chanticleer, and an auspicious start to a thrilling 2023-2024 season.
