On September 14, 2024, the heart of Philadelphia’s Gayborhood saw a momentous tribute with the renaming of Chestnut Street between 12th and 13th Streets to Michael Hinson Way. This renaming honors the life and legacy of Michael S. Hinson Jr., a trailblazing LGBTQ+ activist and community leader whose work significantly impacted Philadelphia, particularly its Black and LGBTQ+ communities.
Hinson, who passed away in 2022, was an influential figure who wore many hats: from advocating for LGBTQ+ rights to addressing the HIV/AIDS crisis and combating homelessness. His efforts to uplift marginalized communities, especially LGBTQ+ people of color, made him a beloved and respected leader. His work was not confined to activism alone. As the first Director of LGBTQ Affairs in Philadelphia, appointed by Mayor John Street in 2000, Hinson helped shape policies that still benefit the LGBTQ+ community today. He also founded SELF, Inc., an emergency housing provider, and COLOURS, an organization serving LGBTQ+ people of color, which evolved from a magazine into a wellness and advocacy group.
The renaming ceremony was attended by many of Hinson’s close colleagues, city officials, and friends. The day was filled with powerful performances, including music from the V. Shayne Frederick Jazz Trio and a dance performance by Ny’Mir Norman, reflecting the arts that Hinson cherished deeply. There was also a traditional Yoruba libation ceremony, paying homage to Hinson’s spiritual connection and influence. City officials, including Councilmember Rue Landau and State Senator Sharif Street, shared emotional tributes, highlighting Hinson’s ability to bridge gaps between the LGBTQ+ and Black communities, and to challenge social biases on multiple fronts.
Hinson’s legacy lives on not just through this symbolic renaming, but also through his lasting contributions to various Philadelphia institutions. His work with the Mazzoni Center, efforts in founding Philly Black Gay Pride, and advocacy for policy changes like the city’s Fair Practices Ordinance have left an indelible mark. Today, the Michael Hinson Justice Institute continues his mission by training the next generation of marginalized LGBTQ+ activists.
The renaming of this portion of Chestnut Street is a poignant reminder of how far the city has come and how crucial leaders like Michael Hinson have been in shaping its LGBTQ+ history. His life’s work continues to inspire, ensuring that the progress made for equality and justice is never forgotten.
