Farewell to Level Up: Philadelphia’s LGBTQ+ Beacon of Unity and Resilience

Executive Director of PhillyGayCalendar

In the heart of Philadelphia’s vibrant Gayborhood, nestled among the bright lights and welcoming spaces of Walnut Street, Level Up Bar & Lounge has stood as a sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community—especially for people of color seeking connection, celebration, and solace. Level Up’s journey, which began amid the uncertainty of March 2020, has been nothing short of a testament to resilience and determination. But now, after four transformative years, Philadelphia’s only Black-owned LGBTQ+ bar is preparing to close its doors.

Level Up opened just a week before the world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Undeterred by the unprecedented timing, its founders—driven by a vision of inclusivity and warmth—pushed forward, braving years of uncertainty and surging costs. While many venues struggled, Level Up persisted, holding tight to its mission of creating a safe, joyful space where individuals from all walks of life could come together and be themselves.

For patrons, Level Up was more than just a bar. Its walls held the laughter of Drag Bingo nights, the cheers from vibrant karaoke gatherings, and the hum of Supreme Sundays, where community members bonded over food, drink, and shared experience. More importantly, it served as a haven for those who needed it most—a space where LGBTQ+ individuals of color could feel truly seen and celebrated in a way few other places offered.

The significance of Level Up extended beyond its events. It offered a space where people could shed the masks they wore elsewhere and step into the comfort of community. It was where first-time visitors were greeted with open arms and regulars found a second home. Patrons often spoke of the unique warmth that radiated from Level Up, a testament to the passion and heart that went into every part of the experience.

And now, this chapter draws to a close. In their message to patrons, Level Up shared, “We regret to inform you that Level Up Bar & Lounge will be closing soon. As of now we do not have an official closing date. Please understand the decision we have come to wasn’t taken lightly.” The weight of operating costs has made it impossible to continue at this location. Yet Level Up’s story isn’t over. The owners are actively seeking a new space, and they view this as an opportunity to write a new chapter—a new era for Level Up that honors its past while embracing the promise of a fresh beginning.

As Philadelphia’s LGBTQ+ community reflects on the journey of Level Up, we’re reminded of its indelible impact. It was more than a bar; it was a symbol of unity, resilience, and celebration of diversity. While its physical presence may soon disappear from Walnut Street, its spirit remains in the hearts of those who danced, laughed, and loved within its walls.

To Level Up’s founders, staff, and every patron who made it the magical place it was: thank you for the memories, the laughter, and the love. Here’s to the next chapter.
