OVO by Cirque du Soleil at Wells Fargo Center

Although retired since 2014, I still relish opportunities to teach, write, and share opinions.

I haven’t seen any advertising about this anywhere. I wonder why nothing on TV.” My friend said as we were in the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia July 12 to experience OVO, by Cirque du Soleil.

The venue was packed with an audience of all ages, with many families with small children, teens, and young adults. Not many handicapped or differently able were seen, however. My companion approached one of the hospitality officers, and arranged a wheelchair for me. Voila! A charming gent guided me into the wheelchair and together we flew what seemed to be a quarter-mile trek from the Broad Street entrance to section 107. Excellent seats, too.

Those of you who have experienced a Cirque du Soleil show know what to basically expect. Outstanding artists flying from trapezes, amazing aerial acts, trampoline excitement, choreography, music, costumes, contortionists, slip-wire acts, comedic sketches, and much more. Lighting and costumes are outstanding.

Those who have never seen a show, have much excitement ahead. This engagement in Philadelphia will be immediately followed by appearances in Estero, Florida, at the Hertz Arena. Then, Miami, and Sunrise, Florida.

OVO was created in 2009 by Deborah Collier, according to press notes provided. It has a cast of 54 outstanding artists who celebrate the beauty and excitement of the insect kingdom. OVO is Latin for egg, which is appropriate for the insect kingdom as well as being an acronym for the subtitle of the show, October’s Very Own. The blue insect, as protagonist, whose name is The Foreigner, enters carrying an enormous egg (hence, Ovo, an egg). He pursues his Ladybug love throughout the event, and in the end succeeds.

Fast-paced, constantly surprising, and totally satisfying, OVO is a smash hit.
