LGBTQ Home for Hope is a 24/7 recovery house and homeless shelter built specifically for the LGBTQ community, accepting residents regardless of ability to pay. Founded in September 2015 by Deja Lynn Alvarez and part of the Divine Light Network of recovery facilities, the shelter operates out of a converted former convent in North Philadelphia’s Fairhill neighborhood, residents call it ‘the Castle’, with a second satellite location in Mt. Airy.
The program combines shelter and drug-and-alcohol recovery support with life skills training, trauma therapy, and vocational programming, treating housing itself as a form of recovery for a population too often turned away from mainstream shelters.
