The Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus (PGMC) Outreach Program seeks to increase positive LGBTQ+ visibility and access to the arts, both of which many students lack, especially those from low-income backgrounds.
Our Outreach Program significantly impacts underserved students on several levels. First, students who utilize STEP and who attend in-school concerts come from schools that are on average 82% low income. We also believe that the LGBTQ+ students who experience our concerts and Outreach programming are inherently underserved given the lack of curriculum development and education focused on LGBT civil rights, bullying, and other issues disproportionately impacting LGBTQ+ youth. Finally, with the downturn in arts funding for public schools in Philadelphia, PGMC intends for its Outreach Program to offer arts access to all students who are underserved by their schools’ curricula.
