Tattooed Mom has anchored the 500 block of South Street since 1997, when co-founders Robert Perry and Kathy “Mom” Hughes set out to build a home for the neighborhood’s weirdos. It’s LGBT+ owned and operated, run today by Perry, who’s built the bar’s reputation as a launching point for LGBT+ performers and writers getting their first stage time. The ground floor serves pub food with a strong vegan menu, cheap drink specials, and an award-winning jukebox, while upstairs is an uncurated, ever-changing gallery of stickers, wheatpastes, and street art that patrons are invited to add to themselves, plus a coin-op pool table and bumper-car booths. The bar hosts more than 300 free community events a year, including open mics, comedy nights, poetry readings, art shows, and nonprofit fundraisers. Sunday afternoons bring a free all-ages Arts & Crafts hour, and Taco Tuesday keeps the $1 tacos coming.
