Join William Way LGBT Community Center on Tuesday, May 26th from 6:30-8:30pm for our monthly Ours Truly Community Space in celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month!

In the 1920s and 30s, working-class Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe ran hundreds of schools and summer camps across North America, including right here in Philadelphia, where children learned the Yiddish language and progressive Jewish history and culture.

The teachers in these schools (not to mention the rich corpus of Yiddish-language children’s literature, songs, plays, and games they produced) made an indelible impact on multiple generations of Jewish-American children and parents. At this event, we will learn some of the history of that movement in Philly, and then bring it to life by singing songs, rehearsing a school play, working through pages of a Yiddish school book, or with arts and crafts, depending on what the group would like.
