New Production of Philly-Grown Opera to Support Immigrant Communities
A fundraising performance of Gian Carlo Menotti’s Pulitzer Prize winning opera, exploring the struggle for freedom under oppressive systems and the dehumanizing weight of bureaucracy.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — April 20, 2026— In their first co-production, Liberty City Arts (LCA) and Prismatic Arts Ensemble present The Consul, taking place on May 20, 2026 and May 22, 2026 at Billy Penn Studios in Olde Kensington.
Presented as a fundraiser, all ticket sales for both performances will be donated to Juntos and New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, two local organizations dedicated to uplifting immigrant communities in crisis.
Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Consul premiered in 1950 in Philadelphia, winning the Pulitzer Prize for music. Its story of an immigrant family risking everything to find safety and being impeded by bureaucratic processes is unfortunately still relevant. In presenting this historic and moving work at such a critical time, LCA and Prismatic aim to spark a moment of hope and collective action.
Both Juntos and New Sanctuary Movement will be present at performances to share information about their advocacy work and to offer opportunities for volunteering as well as for financial support.
LCA and Prismatic are honored to bring this masterwork back to Philadelphia. As part of both organization’s missions to support local artists, all participating performers and creatives are Philadelphia-based. Presented at Billy Penn Studios, this program reflects Liberty City Arts’ and Prismatic Arts Ensemble’s commitment to presenting opera and classical music in ways that are accessible, relevant, and community-centered.
“What will your papers do?… They are too thin an armor against a bullet.” – The Consul, Gian Carlo Menotti

About Liberty City Arts and Prismatic Arts Ensemble
Liberty City Arts brings opera to unexpected spaces across Philadelphia. Founded by artists, for artists, our mission is to empower Philadelphia-rooted talent through bold performances, training opportunities, and community-centered programming that returns opera to its origins as a progressive, accessible, and deeply communal art form. We believe opera should reflect the people and neighborhoods it serves. By centering local artists, presenting new and underrepresented voices, and removing financial and cultural barriers to participation, Liberty City Arts creates pathways for artists to sustain their careers while inviting new audiences into the operatic experience. Our work prioritizes equity, experimentation, and collaboration, ensuring that opera in Philadelphia remains vibrant, relevant, and responsive to the city’s diverse cultural landscape. Established in 2020, Prismatic Arts Ensemble is a collaborative project between Philadelphia area performers combining immersive theatre, drag arts, and opera, with the goal of giving audiences a different way to experience classical music. Prismatic also aims to change the paradigm in the way that they select repertoire, cast additional musicians, and hire artistic affiliates. They are committed to featuring the work of underrepresented artists- Black, Indigenous, and other Artists of Color; womxn; artists in the LGBTQIA+ community- as well as to cultivating a creative environment where artists and audience members alike can be fully present as their authentic selves.
