Gay Shows at the Fringe Festival

The Philadelphia Fringe Festival is in full swing, running Sept. 5-22, 2013. There are a number of shows with gay content or are of interest to LGBT. This includes several shows for the transgender community, and not just drag! Take a peek at some of what they have to offer. Details for all Fringe shows are at www.FringeArts.com

DANCE:

* Hush Now Sweet High Heels and Oak (9/11, 13-15) Gay choreographer Brian Sander’s dance troupe JUNK is a perennial favorite. This show “came from glimpses of the past, memories of a time before I was aware of myself.”

* Basement (9/13-15, 19-21) Gay choreographer Gunnar Montana created this “beautifully twisted, violently artistic and utterly macabre love story” in response to the break up with his ex.

* Cavidad (9/13-15) Using fluorescent light sculptures, E|N|Z|A unravels the complexities of love, fear & attraction.

DRAG & TRANSGENDER:

* If I Were a Drag Queen, I Would Be Famous (9/11-15) Shannon Agnew’s cabaret performance includes legends Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Julie Andrews, Patti LuPone and others in this hilarious parody.

* Looking for Uranus: Starzina Starfish-Browne’s Comeback Tour (9/11-12, 15, 18-19, 22) A comedic drag play by Eric Singel featuring the “Ass(tromalogical) Ho(roscopulist)” title character.

* XY Scheherazade (9/19-22) A play somewhere between “Arabian Nights” and “The Road” in this fantasy of Armageddon and transgender identity.

* Gender Reel Film & Performance Arts Festival (9/19-22) Features 19 films plus other performance arts pieces about transgender people. Official website.

WOMEN:

* Chlamydia dell’Arte: More Sex-Ed Burlesque (9/10-12, 17-19) A burlesque show with singing and dancing about safe sex, sexual orientation and sex ed, featuring two female actresses.

OTHER FRINGE SHOWS:
These shows are self-identified by the theaters as of interest to the LGBT community. They might have gay content, might be allegorical, might have gay actors or might just be “interesting.” It’s hard to tell from the descriptions; view at your own risk. 🙂

* Completeness (9/12-14) Elliot creates a computer algorithm to help Molly with her molecular biology research, and their relationship shifts rapidly.

* Federal Detention: The Musical (9/11, 14-15) A comedy about two marijuana activists held in federal detention for six days.

* The Momentum (9/12-14) A comedy about an exploitative self-help program that preys on the desperate.

* Paperback Dreadful (9/12-14) A horror parody inspired by the “Goosebumps” series.

* Opera Macabre: Edgar Allen Poe (9/13-15, 19) The Philadelphia Opera Collective takes on this American storyteller in a visceral but accessible manner.

* Bat Boy: The Musical (9/18-22) A half-boy half-bat finds love and happiness until a scandalous secret is revealed.

* Lucinda’s Bed (9/18-22) Lucinda is married, and the monster under her bed still visits her.

* The Talkback (9/18-21) A comedy/improv piece by the creators of “The Giant Squid” and “The Annihilation Point.”

NON-FRINGE SHOWS: Plus, there are several other upcoming shows not connected with the Fringe Festival, but which still might be fun.

* Queen at the Queen” (9/13) The Rainbow Chorale of Delaware, an LGBT chorus, accompanies the rock band “In the Light” with songs from Queen. Held in Wilmington DE.

* Eternal Glamnation: A GlamRock Cabaret (9/15) Brat Productions’ fantasia about finding yourself under the glittery shadow.

* Anita’s Angels: September Sequined Shenanigans (9/15) A monthly cabaret performance in Wilmington DE.

* Bro-lesque (9/17) A cabaret in Media PA.

* Dumpstas Do Dionne (9/18) An informal bimonthly cabaret by the Dumpsta’ Players. This one features Dionne Warwick. Come dressed in ’60s clothes for free admission.
