Executive Director of PhillyGayCalendar

Dennis Clegg, former President of the Fins Aquatics Group, Philadelphia’s LGBT masters swim team, died on Saturday, December 21 doing what he was best known for in the gay community: swimming.

Clegg went into cardiac arrest during a swim practice and was pronounced dead by emergency medical officials a short time after he was taken to a local hospital.

Besides his former leadership role with Fins, Clegg organized many regional LGBT swim meets and was the Fins’ representative for Team Philadelphia.  Fins, which was formed in 1988 to support LGBT swimmers in the region, is a member of the United States Masters Swimming and the International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics organizations.

Anh Dang, one of Clegg’s teammates, was at the pool when Clegg went into cardiac arrest.  Dang, who swam with Clegg for seven years, was deeply saddened by the news and added, “The entire team is grieving.”

A statement made by a board reprehensive on the Fin’s Facebook page states, “Dennis was a long time Fin and loyal friend, and his support and involvement with the team will be greatly missed.  Further information about services and arrangements will be provided as they become available.”
