Will and Anthony Nunziata: ‘Come and join our family after Thanksgiving at the Rrazz Room’

Executive Director of PhillyGayCalendar

Will and Anthony Nunziata have appeared several times at New York City's 54 Below. Now, the twin brothers will sing up a storm in New Hope at the Rrazz Room on Saturday, November 29. I managed to catch up with Anthony Nunziata recently. He spoke about twin brother Will, their career, and Anthony's solo appearance in New York City on November 28, the day before their New Hope premier appearance.

"It's going to be a great night," said Anthony Nunziata about their Rrazz Room appearance. "'Broadway Our Way' was our popular traveling show this past year. We enjoyed four or five sold-out concerts. We're excited that our long-time arranger, Ted Firth, will be joining us for our very first appearance in New Hope. Ted's been with us for years now. He's worked with Tom Wopat, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and a host of other great talents. Ted is a hugely talented man."

And what do the twins expect when they appear there? "We love playing intimate rooms. It's how we started. The first room we played was our living room. We've appeared at 54 Below in New York, and we hear that the Rrazz Room is a great, intimate space. I am an actor, so I feel connected to the audience, seeing them and feeding off the special energy an audience provides. I trained in improvisational comedy as well, at the Upright Citizens' Brigade, so I'm using all that I learned during live appearances. There's nothing like a live concert."

What will be in store for your audience at the Rrazz Room? "In addition to talking to the audience, and our Cheerios story, Will and I will be doing ‘This Could Be the Start of Something Big' by Steve Allen, ‘Just in Time,' from the musical, ‘Bells Are Ringing,' ‘Being Alive' from the musical, ‘Company,' and several numbers written by Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim is a wonderful writer we love."

Will and Anthony Nunziata were born on Staten Island, with much of their childhood spent in Brooklyn, New York. They then came of age in Pelham Manor, New York, according to their biographical information. Speaking of that living room, Anthony had this to say, "Will and I first performed in our living room for our family. That was our first taste of intimate rooms." What's "the Cheerios Story" you mentioned earlier? "We auditioned at age thirteen for the Honey Nut Cheerios singing contest. It was great. We replaced the Harlem Boys Choir who had sung the jingle before us. We will talk about it as part of our show, you can be sure."

So where did the show business bug come from? Was a parent or family member in the entertainment business? "Our grandfather (William Wendell) was the announcer for the Letterman Show for many years. He was a show business personality who had a long career, so I guess that's where it might have started." Do you have any other siblings, especially any who might also be in show business? "We have a younger sister, Annie. She is very smart and wants no part of show business. She works for Boston College, our alma mater."

We notice that you will be appearing in a solo show the day before your New Hope appearance at New York's 54 Below. Is this a new career path as a solo performer, or just a one-time thing? "My November 28th appearance at 54 Below will be something I've always wanted to do. It's my solo concert debut there. As for it being an indication of a breakup, no way. Will is going to appear. He wouldn't have it any other way!" He continued, "Break up? Not a chance! We have a CD, ‘Make Someone Happy,' where we both sing together. We have a busy schedule appearing together around the country with symphony orchestras. We will be in Ohio with our "Broadway Holiday" show, for instance, so there's nothing about us breaking up appearing together. We'll be in Wisconsin, Connecticut, and in Canada with the Edmonton Symphony. Will and I are looking forward to working with our pal, Steven Reineke, who conducts the New York Pops."

The Wall Street Journal has said that both of you are "blessed with strong voices and leading man looks." Is that important? "We have done some modeling for Hermes in Toronto, and we've done some things with designer Carmen Marc Valvo, so it doesn't hurt."

What is the last word for your fans? "It's going to be fun. We love interacting with the audience. We're all about a shared musical experience. Come join our family after Thanksgiving. We're putting our family in the car and we're all driving from New York to New Hope. Forget your troubles. Come and have a great time."
