Tommy Tune, ‘Every Moment is a Creative Moment’

Calling all gays and other fabulous fans of musical theatre. Actor, dancer, singer, director, producer, choreographer, and Broadway legend Tommy Tune will appear at the Rrazz Room at the Prince Theatre for three shows May 6-7. He will present his new show, “Taps, Tunes, and Tall Tales,” described as a “biographical stroll celebrating 50-plus years of big-time showmanship.” Hard to believe those numbers. Mr. Tune was born in Texas, in 1939, according to his biography, which also states that he is 6’6”, which might explain the “Tall” in “Tall Tales.” He is perhaps best known as a tap dancer and choreographer. Tommy Tune has won ten Tony Awards, and continues to wow audiences with his new act which will feature songs by Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, George and Ira Gershwin, Carole King, and others. He will dance and he will talk about his illustrious career and the people he met. Michael Biaggi, Tune’s musical director for nearly 40 years, will also be on hand to guide the evening along.

In case you were wondering what else Tommy Tune does besides performing, he has sponsored the Tommy Tune Awards for the past 14 years. As part of TUTS (Theatre Under the Stars), an organization celebrating musical theatre in Houston, Texas, by high school students. This year, Stratford High School’s presentation of the classic musical, “Anything Goes,” swept the 14th annual Tommy Tune Awards. I found it to be impossible to look away from, since tune is such a great raconteur as well as a consummate showman.
