Internationally renowned Chanticleer Vocal Ensemble performed their program, “A Chanticleer Christmas” at the University Chapel on December 7, 2024. Rarely used, this was a fine opportunity to experience the beautiful Chapel.
A dozen men are Chanticleer. Their photos and bios can be found at their website,
Last year was their first appearance at Princeton University Concerts. I enjoyed their concert very much then.
The Ensemble sang a program of diverse songs from the Renaissance to compositions by William Walton, Benjamin Britten, traditional Welsh and English carols, to traditional Appalachian songs and Spirituals. All were well-paced, beautifully executed, always interesting, and members occasionally commented on the numbers before performing them.
Many recordings have been made by the Ensemble, and they have won numerous awards over the years. Of course, the dozen men in Chanticleer often change over the years. They have ambitious seasons in California, where they are based out of San Francisco. They also tour extensively. This is one stop in a multi-city Christmas Tour.
The program notes were copious and lucid, written by the Director, Tim Keeler.
Applause was spirited and well-deserved, with the men performing an encore.
Return again next season.
Princeton University Concerts continue with many more rare and beautiful performing artists and programs.
