The Philadelphia Orchestra presented The Muppet Christmas Carol live in concert on December 18 and 19, 2024 in Marian Anderson Hall, to the delight of all those present.
Maestro Constantine Kitsopoulos led the orchestra in live performances while the film was projected on screen.
The usual Muppet favorites were all in attendance for this 1992 film. Miss Piggy, Kermit, Fozzie Bear, and more joined actor Michael Caine in this musical version of Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol.
The actors David Hemmings and David Warner were considered to play Ebenezer Scrooge, and the part was offered to comedian George Carlin. Henson offered the role to Michael Caine, who said that he would play Ebenezer Scrooge as if he were working with members of the Royal Shakespeare Company, performing it without any sly asides or camp, as if it were totally dramatic, not playing down to puppets.
Most reviewers praised Caine’s performance, while many disliked the film. Caine himself proclaimed that he was delighted with the result.
Disney had high expectations for this $12 million dollar film. Even though the film grossed $27 million in North America, it was considered to be disappointing financially. However, The Muppet Christmas Carol continues to be one of the favorite holiday films.
This performance delighted audience members of all ages. It is amazing how the orchestra follows the film score with such grace and precision. Kudos to the members of The Philadelphia Orchestra.
