Knock Restaurant & Bar is Philadelphia’s Gayborhood restaurant-lounge — a stylish, welcoming New American spot owned by Bill Wood, the original “Woody” behind Woody’s Bar. Open since 2007 on the corner of 12th and Locust, Knock combines craft cocktails, late-night kitchen hours, and one of the most packed weekly LGBT+ entertainment calendars in the city — showtunes Sundays, Monday trivia, Wednesday drag karaoke hosted by Iris Spectre, and live piano bar on Friday and Saturday nights. Named after the Knock Shrine in County Mayo, Ireland, the restaurant has become one of the Gayborhood’s most versatile venues — equally at home as a first-date dinner spot, a pre-theater meal, or a 1 AM drinks destination.
Knock serves New American cuisine with global influences — the menu covers everything from fried calamari and salmon cakes to short rib, braised pasta dishes, and a locally-beloved lobster flatbread that’s become a sleeper hit at the bar. Signature drinks include the Almond Joy martini and the South Beach cosmo, and the cocktail program leans classic-with-a-twist rather than trendy. Happy hour runs daily from 5 to 7 PM with drink specials, and $12 dinner specials run Monday through Thursday from 5:30 to 10 PM — one of the best kitchen deals in Center City. Kitchen stays open late: until midnight most nights, until 2 AM on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. The bar itself pours until 2 AM every night, which makes Knock one of the only Gayborhood spots serving a full food menu past 11 PM.
Bill Wood is the “Woody” who founded Woody’s — for over three decades, Philadelphia’s largest and most iconic gay bar. Wood and his brother Steve Wood sold their stake in Woody’s in 2006, intending to retire, but within a year they were back in the neighborhood with a new project — Knock, which opened on the northeast corner of 12th and Locust in August 2007. The space had previously cycled through a string of short-lived restaurants (Lula, Sukothai, Café Cosmo, Pamplona), and Wood said in interviews at the time that he wanted to “break the curse” of the corner. Nearly two decades later, Knock has outlasted every predecessor combined and cemented Bill Wood as a living Gayborhood legend — one of the few people in Philadelphia LGBT+ nightlife history to successfully launch and sustain two distinct institutions.
Knock’s weekly schedule is the most consistent LGBT+ programming calendar in the Gayborhood. Wednesday karaoke — hosted by drag performer Iris Spectre, Miss Bob & Barbara’s 2024 and Philadelphia’s reigning Drag Queen of the Year, with co-host Ben Ablao — is the signature night, drawing a packed crowd from 10 PM into the late hours. Monday trivia, Tuesday movie nights, Sunday showtunes, and weekend piano nights round out the rotation. The room transforms dramatically between dinner service and late night: tables are cleverly designed with lifts that raise them to bar height once the dining hours end, converting the space from a quiet restaurant into a late-night lounge. Iris Spectre also hosts occasional drag brunches, and the venue regularly runs Pride-themed programming, benefit shows, and one-off cabaret nights.
Knock occupies the ground floor of The Cosmopolitan building at 225 S 12th Street, directly on the northeast corner of 12th and Locust — arguably the most-trafficked intersection in the Gayborhood. That location puts it within a 60-second walk of nearly every other LGBT+ venue: 254 is across the street, Bar X is half a block south, Woody’s is two blocks north, Voyeur is a block west, and Tavern on Camac is a block east. Sidewalk seating during warmer months is some of the best people-watching real estate in Center City. Knock takes reservations via OpenTable, walk-ins welcome at the bar. The 13th Street SEPTA station is three blocks away, and both the Locust and Walnut garages are within 200 feet for drivers.
