Philadelphia’s gay communty is always growing bigger and better. We announced the new Boxers Sports Bar opening at the end of the summer, and of course Igloo Frozen Yoguart Shop that is already thriving in the gayborhood, and now we can announce the arrivale of Big Gay Ice Cream.
We talked with Patty Devery, the Office Manager of Big Gay Ice Cream, which already has two location in New York (one in the East Village and one in the West Village)
We asked Patty how Big Gay Ice Cream got it’s start. “Douglas Quint (owner) was working as a traveling musician and was looking for something fun and weird to do over the summer off-season, ” Patty said, “A friend had a rented ice cream truck, and it seemed perfect! The name was a placeholder for the first Facebook group, which was started before they knew what to call the truck. It just stuck.”
“Since Big Gay Ice Cream started as a truck, we take traditional soft serve and use unique toppings and combinations to put a twist on that idea. Our most popular item, for example, is the Salty Pimp, a vanilla cone injected with dulce le leche, sprinkled with sea salt, and dipped in chocolate.”
Philadelphia has attracted a lot of attention from other cities, New York in particular, as an expanding gay market – From Boxers NYC, to Mimi Imfurst and now Big Gay Ice Cream finding a new home in our backyard.
“It’s a funky city (which we like) and has a vibrant food scene,” commented Patty, “We love being in good company and our location is within walking distance of restaurants owned by Marc Vetri, Kevin Sbraga, and Jose Garces. It’s also close enough for our dairy, Ronnybrook, to deliver to.”
The new location will be the corner of Broad and South Street and are hoping for an August-September opening.
