It’s Not Easy Being This Funny

There are dozens of comedians floating around the city of brotherly love, but few can make you lol (really lol, not the lol you text when you have nothing else to say) via interview.  Alejandro Morales is one of those people!  I asked him the "quick 5 questions" to dig deeper into Alejandro's brain and give him a chance to plug his Fringe Arts show!

1. Describe yourself in 1 tweet or less… Bonus points for hashtags!

People who don't even know me are talking about me. They're saying "Hey do you smell pot?" #fame

2. How'd you get your start in comedy

After I graduated from University of the Arts in 2007 with a film degree, I hit all dead ends in producing my feature-length screenplay, and I needed a creative outlet that cost less than $100,000. I turned to standup comedy and I fell in love immediately. I competed in the first ever "Gayborhood Games," at Voyeur, and even though I didn't technically, "win," it went well, so I kept at it.

3. You're bringing your comedy to the Gayborhood? What're the details!

I used to bring my comedy to the Gayborhood. After the "Gayborhood Games," I hooked up with a local gay bar and hosted the longest running standup comedy showcase in the Gayborhood, from 2010 to 2012. After that run ended, I joined the greater Philadelphia standup comedy scene and started producing/hosting shows in other neighborhoods, at venues like the Trocadero and Urban Saloon, and now, Johnny Brenda's. I still make appearances sometimes; I came back to the Gayborhood once to "roast" Brittany Lynn, and you should've seen the look on her face! – Like someone did her makeup with a set of wet crayons. It was fun.

4. Fringe Fun is Flying Fast, what's your show about?

"Night Trolley" is an experimental variety show that features more than a dozen of the city's comedy pioneers from the worlds of sketch, improv, and standup. It's about a journey of the mind/body that takes place at night, on a trolley. We've got a conductor with a heart of gold, a lovable sidekick, and even a house band. Over the course of the show we'll be picking up all kinds of passengers, getting glimpses into their lives, learning about love, getting into fights — all familiar public transit scenarios, except these will be funny on purpose. But some will be sad, too, because this is the Fringe Fest and we want people to experience complicated emotions.

5. Soapbox time, tell me something juicy, something fun, something that makes you different or that you want people to know!

Something juicy – This isn't a soapbox… It's a box of Florida oranges.

Something fun – All the oranges have little arms and legs! And they can talk!

Something I want people to know – The oranges are holding me hostage. They'll only release me if everybody buys "Night Trolley" tickets at fringarts.com/night-trolley and they want me to make it clear that by "everybody" they mean literally everybody. Might be a good idea to share this around.
