In celebration of Pride Month, Penn University Life took a trip to the Philadelphia Gayborhood with Malik Muhammad, Associate Director of the University of Penn LGBT Center, to learn about the history of the neighborhood, explore Malik’s favorite spots, and visit a few LGBTQ+ owned small businesses.

March On: The Fight for Pride

After accusations of racism and transphobia ripped apart the group that ran Philadelphia’s biggest LGBTQ celebration, a scrappy group of activists is trying to pick up the pieces. Similar reckonings are taking place at Pride organizations across the nation. What happens next in Philly is unclear. Can a group with little experience and lofty goals create a new Pride festival that’s equitable and lasting? Can the movement be revived — and finally get it right?

Point Breeze Community Pride Party

Community, located at 1200 S. 21st (Federal Street in Point Breeze), has partnered with Smirnoff Vodka for the second year in a row to host a Pride Party and to raise money for William Way Community Center on Wednesday June 22rd from 5:00pm-12:00am. There will be a Spiked Smirnoff Lemonade Stand and scratch made carnival foods like homemade corn dogs with house-made ketchup and funfetti cake.
