As the sun sets on June 3, 2023, Concourse Nightclub will transform into a candy-colored wonderland for an evening of music, dancing, and most importantly – giving back to the community. BOS Philly is partnering with Circuit Mom to host Philadelphia’s official pride party called Candyland – a night filled with delight designed not only to create joy but also bring people together in support of local LGBT charities.
Since 2018, BOS Philly has donated over $60,000 to local LGBT charities by organizing exciting events like Candyland. Their generosity has gone as far as donating $1,000 to ACLU’s Drag Defence Fund thanks largely due their guests’ kindness.
This year’s beneficiary is none other than William Way Center – an organization committed towards engaging and supporting diverse LGBTQIA+ communities through arts & culture initiatives. Chris Bartlett – the director of William Way Center praised BOS for being more than just event organizers.
Circuit parties have a long history of philanthropy. In the 1990s, gay circuit parties played a significant role in supporting AIDS organizations nationwide. These elaborate, large-scale dance events, often spanning over several days, brought thousands of gay men together to celebrate their community and pride. As the HIV/AIDS epidemic loomed large in the lives of the LGBTQ+ individuals and their families during this time, circuit parties emerged as essential fundraising opportunities to support the many organizations working to address the crisis. Event organizers and attendees rallied behind a common cause, transforming these gatherings into vital platforms to raise awareness, provide support, and fund ongoing AIDS research and prevention efforts. With admission prices and proceeds from events going directly to various AIDS organizations, these parties raised millions of dollars that helped fund a myriad of services, such as medical care, counseling, and educational programs. As a result, gay circuit parties in the 1990s not only fostered solidarity within the community but also provided essential resources to bolster the battle against the AIDS epidemic.
For attendees, the Candyland event goes beyond just being an unforgettable night of music and dancing; it serves as a token toward making a real impact on the lives of those in need. The support generated at events like these creates ripples of change across Philadelphia’s LGBT community, ultimately leading to better support for queer individuals.
