It’s The Dollhouse, Bitches!

Executive Director of PhillyGayCalendar

If you want something done right, send a lesbian, gay man drag queen to do the job. This, my people, is me. I know you are expecting this to be written by one of the “boys” for PhillyGayCalendar, maybe even our very own Ms. Brittany Lynn, whose name was bandied about with regularity last night and who will guest star in next week’s “The Dollhouse Revue“, but no, the boss picked me for the job and I couldn’t have been happier and he couldn’t have gotten it more right. It was on.

Ms. Mimi Imfurst, who was featured on this season of RuPaul’s “Drag Race”, is the hostess and creator of this fabulous drag show that is billed as “A New Vegas Style Drag Experience”. I have to be honest, as a drag whore, and one who has seen drag in Philadelphia, New York, New Orleans, California and Las Vegas, this blew all of my experiences out of the water.

I arrived preshow to talk to the ladies. I was escorted upstairs to their dressing room and got to watch the magic. It felt a little like “going behind the curtain”, just like “Wicked”, my favorite musical. It was then that I forced myself on Mimi and The Dollstars. Last night’s Dollstars, The Goddess Isis, Omyra Lynn, Rhoda Dickin, Navaya Shay and Satine were getting ready for their disco themed show. Each week they employ a different theme, next week’s being touted as “Night of the Living Drag”, which Mimi promised would be off the charts. I seriously might have to use all of my vacation time from my “real job” to be off every Thursday because after seeing last night’s performances, I don’t want to miss a week.

All of the “ladies” were happy to let me eavesdrop on their conversation and bother them with questions like, “Where do you put your junk? For real, it is seamless.” They were all masters of illusion and beauty. They were easy with each other and there was not a diva in the bunch. Well, I mean, they were all divas in the most fabulous way, but not in the “No more wire hangers” kind of way. The Goddess Isis was touted as the Aunt of the bunch and watches over the queens in waiting. She also “gives face” in the fiercest way I have ever seen and I have been known to “give face” myself.

I got to chat with Mimi about why Philadelphia. As primarily a New Yorker, she was asked to come here to host an event and basically fell in love. She wanted to bring “good entertainment” to Philadlelphia. Trust me, she has done more than that. She originally started this show at a different bar and when it was disclosed that that bar would be closing, the other gay bars basically went into a bidding war to be able to host her weekly theatrical extravaganza. Voyeur won out as the space is amazing. It is big and they built her her own stage for her and her Dollstars. Voyeur is normally a members only club but every Wednesday for their show, no membership is required and only a $5 cover is charged. I am not the most mathematically gifted lesbian, but If you divide the $5 cover into approximately 19 performances and over two hours of high end show, it is a win.

I had a table reserved in the front and my dollar and five dollar bills at the ready. To be honest, there wasn’t a bad spot in the house and the crowd was hype. Mimi started the show with a solo number to “Macarthur Park”, one of my personal fave disco hits. She even managed to hilariously and graciously work a young man into her act that might have been a little “sleepy” and was using part of the stage as his bed. As a bigger boned girl myself, I was truly jealous of how Mimi could dance and jump in heels in a way that I can’t even walk in them. Although she admits to not be able to sew a stitch, she designs all of her own ensembles and they were stunning, especially the “fetus dress”, that she performed the Lady Gaga gay anthem, “Born this Way”, to. That dress alone was worth the price of admission.

After her number, during her numbers and in between, she had the audience laughing. There is a quote from “Next” magazine about her that states, “Second to none. If laughter is the best medicine, then Mimi Imfurst would be the cure for cancer”. My face literally hurt when i went home last night from laughing and smiling.

As each week it is a different theme, there is a lot of work being done in the six days in between including rehearsals. This was evident. After her first number, all six of the ladies did a choreographed number to “It’s Raining Men” that brought the house down. Just as Mimi said to me when I met her, she wants it to be a show, a theatrical event, not just another drag show. She definitely accomplished this.

Each lady was beautiful and brought her own talents to each number performed. They each got to perform at least three of their own numbers and also perform in the ensemble pieces. The Goddess Isis, who had nipples that wouldn’t quit that I was jealous of, did a performance to Tina Turner’s “Disco Inferno” that was awesome. Ms. Omyra Lynn was a beautiful chocolate goddess who did Rick James like it was her job. One of the new ladies, Rhoda Dickin, was a dancing phenom that did splits that made my crotch hurt. Ms. Navaya Shay, who I just saw perform at Equality Forum, made the stage her own with a performance of “I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross and up and comer, Satine, transformed herself into Madonna for “Hung Up”.

Ms. Imfurst kept everything moving and hilarious. There was never a lull in the action and I might have fallen in love a little bit or maybe a lot. I only hope that someday she makes my dream of becoming a true drag queen diva come true. It was worth every penny and every minute of lost sleep as I actually had to get my ass up early for work today. I am hyped up on energy drinks and smiling to myself as I write this now. After I use up all of my vacation time at work to take off every Thursday, I might just have to quit my job so that i can continue to stay up into the wee hours every Wednesday to see the best show in Philly. Maybe my new “boss”, Steve McCann at PhillyGayCalendar, actually has a paying gig for me that would allow this to happen. We will see. Until then, in the words of Ms. Mimi Imfurst, “Bitches, where you at?” Get yourself to Voyeur on Wednesday nights and also check out Mimi on facebook or at mimiimfurst.com.
