Deadpool & Wolverine Delivers Action, Comedy, Gay Insouciance, Blood and Gore Aplenty

Although retired since 2014, I still relish opportunities to teach, write, and share opinions.

Deadpool & Wolverine, the newest installment in the Deadpool saga, is an over-the-top assault on the senses, guaranteed to thrill tweens, teens, and action junkies.

Distributed by Walt Disney Studios, Produced by Marvel Studios, directed by Shawn Levy, it was co-written by Ryan Gosling, Rhett Reise, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wills. With a $200 million budget, it has already grossed over one billion dollars since its theatrical release in the USA on July 26, 2024.

This film is on fire. Don’t cry for Ryan Reynolds, who was listed as a producer. He has already made several fortunes with this investment. No wonder he is given top billing over Hugh Jackman. Reynolds is the boss.

Having never before been exposed to the Deadpool universe, I relied heavily on internet searches for much information. For those who know little or nothing about the Deadpool character, he has appeared in two previous films. This is why this is also called Deadpool 3. His costume resembles that of Spider Man, with some sinister kernings. This iteration is a bright red, and quite form enhancing. In one scene, he does a little stripper-themed bump and grind number in praise of his male rizz. (Nick Pauley is credited as Dancepool.) Mr. Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds, aka Wade Williams), is possessed of an incessant verbal stream of jive talk, a song of constant jokes and often risque one-liners that often bedazzles as it pivots wildly from several one-liners and zingers.

Deadpool has been called “The Regenerating  Degenerate,” as he can bleed, have horrible violence done to him, yet live. The same is true of Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine. This causes much blood, gore and violence between the two, while they regenerate and return again and again to be ripped asunder, wounded, stabbed, shot, etc. Unlike the Star Wars films of the last century, the Clones were artificial folk, while the Multiverse soldiers bleed, die, and suffer in a multitude of ways. We see this early on when Mr. Deadpool digs up Wolverine’s corpse and uses the bones to slay dozens of soldiers in a continuous bloodbath of carnage.

Do forgive a few spoilers which appear in this review.

Matthew Macfayden is Mr. Paradox, a smarmy, languid character dripping in Disney gay villainy. Once a leading man (Macfayden starred as as romantic lead Mr. Darcy in the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice), he now drips languor and irony tempered with villainy as a capo in the Time Variance Authority. It is he who starts this plot in motion involving Mr. Deadpool, Wolverine, and the mastery of the universe.

The civilian Mr. Deadpool, also known as Wade Wilson, was scarred by regenerative mutation. He had been a used car salesman before called to save the universe. Intriguingly, his used car salesman friend Peter Wisdom (Rob Delaney) becomes much more into the film when he appears to be a Superior Deadpool character gifted with extremely large genitalia. and so it goes.

Thankfully, everyone involved in this project left Tilda Swinton alone, and chose Emma Corrin as what we may call Tilda Swinton, Jr. Ms. Corrin is Cassandra Nova, sadistic twin sister of Charles Xavier exiled into The Void, where she is an evil master of all things. One of her tricks is to dissolve Johnny Storm’s flesh, thereby tossing his steaming entrails onto the dust. Chris Evans was the unfortunate Johnny Storm. (Alert: don’t leave the theatre after the thousand and one people in the credits. There’s a bit about Johnny Storm.)

Mr. Reynold’s stunt double Alex Kyshkovych may have indeed been in most of the film, since the character’s face is covered. A neat way to save wear and tear on the star.

Much has been written of ancient Rome’s arena spectacles, but you may rest assured that Deadpool & Wolverine contains much more action, violence, blood, menace, and rampantly evil gays than anything the Twelve Caesars might have created.

Guest appearances by Wesley Snipes, Henry Cavill, and Channing Tatum, add to the opus.

See Deadpool & Wolverine and have a ripping good time.
