Philadelphia’s most prolific and longest-running drag troupe, Philly Drag Mafia has been the dominant force in regional drag entertainment for more than two decades. Founded and led by Brittany Lynn — the drag persona of Ian Morrison, widely recognized as the “Don” of Philly drag — the collective has been named Philadelphia Magazine’s Best Drag Show in both 2022 and 2023, and its members perform at venues, casinos, brunches, and private events across the tri-state area. Brittany Lynn was born in 1996 when Ian Morrison, at the time performing as Alice in a touring production of The Not-So Brady Bunch, was pulled onstage during a drag contest at 12th Air Command — the gay nightclub that later became iCandy, Tabu, and now 254. Within two years, she was the permanent host of the legendary First Friday Drag Mafia show at Shampoo Nightclub, which became the most-attended drag show in Philadelphia history and ran for nearly a decade. Since then, she’s performed at Atlantic City’s Studio Six (where she won the Miss’D America crown), New York’s Kurfew, and nearly every LGBT+ venue in the region. In 2022, Philadelphia City Council declared March 15 as “Brittany Lynn Day” in recognition of her contributions to the city’s culture.
Drag Mafia’s public calendar runs year-round across the tri-state area. Signature recurring events include Saturday night Drag Mafia Takeover at 254, the Sunday drag brunch at Silk City in Northern Liberties, summertime Sunset Drag at Bok Bar (April through October), Gaybill Broadway Cabaret at Tavern on Camac, and select drag brunches at XFINITY Live! near the stadiums. The troupe has appeared at Parx Casino, Valley Forge Casino, Bourbon and Branch, Punch Line Philly, and dozens of other venues. Unlike most drag shows that are venue-based, Drag Mafia operates as Philadelphia’s primary drag queen booking agency — Brittany Lynn employs a rotating roster of queens for every kind of private event. Bachelorette parties are the single most common booking, but the troupe also performs at birthdays, corporate functions, holiday parties, weddings, and charity fundraisers. The group has built a reputation as the go-to booking for events that need a professional production rather than just one performer — show packages typically include multiple queens, a host, music programming, and coordinated choreography.
Brittany Lynn launched Drag Queen Story Time in Philadelphia in 2015, reading children’s books aloud at libraries, museums, and schools across the region. She has since published two children’s books of her own through Amazon, and despite recurring protests from extremist groups — including Westboro Baptist Church demonstrators at a 2019 Germantown library event — the program has continued with strong support from the Free Library of Philadelphia and Parks & Rec. Lynn also founded Miss Fancy Brigade, the only all-LGBT+ Mummers brigade, which has marched in the Philadelphia New Year’s Day Mummers Parade every January since 2012. The brigade was the first official drag presence in the 100+ year history of the parade.
Drag Mafia has won Philadelphia Magazine’s Best of Philly for Best Drag Show in 2022 and 2023, and Brittany Lynn has been named to Philadelphia Gay News’s Most Influential LGBTQ+ Leaders list. The troupe was praised by Philly Mag as the smart pick for drag that’s “fun but a bit less bawdy and in-your-face” — meaning it’s the best choice when you’re planning a drag event for a mixed-audience crowd or a group that wants high-quality entertainment without club-level intensity. The City of Philadelphia has hired the Drag Mafia for multiple mainstream city events, a rare crossover from the nightlife scene into official civic programming.
