The holiday season seems to exaggerate feeling lonely, especially when we assume everyone else is having a jolly time.
We all need to fit in and belong. When you start a new job, you want to fit in. When you join a new group, you want to belong. When you arrive at a dinner party, you want to feel welcomed. This is normal. We all need to feel part of our communities. But why do we often feel like outsiders?
I’m a 17 year old slowly falling for someone who has just told me that they are HIV+. Both the decision to stop the relationship from happening and to keep going seem to be wrong. (Either I put myself at risk, or potentially wreck his emotional state.) I don’t even know who to listen to about the risks though. Some say if I kiss him, I’ll get HIV and some say I won’t unless I have open cuts in my mouth. Just how risky is all of this?
Local trans artist/performer and activist Rae Drew sat down to a slice of pizza with PGC’s Alejandro Morales to lend some insight into his reckoning with identity, life transitions, and his latest project.
Imagine: You’re out with your special someone for dinner at an elegant restaurant in town. Plush upholstery and soft lighting set the mood for a romantic evening. Then, all of a sudden, your waiter breaks into song, crooning a Cole Porter tune to you and your fellow diners.

The term “bullying” doesn’t do justice to the recent hate-fueled beating of an Ohio teen, and with the aggressor receiving a mere three-day suspension, no kind of justice is yet in sight. The larger question looms: How can we protect queer youth?
Jesus hung out with sinners whose behavior he clearly did not approve of. But he reserved his strongest disapproval for those other sinners who would condemn them. He did not say, ‘Hate the sin but love the sinner,’ but he did say this: ‘Let him who is without sin cast the first stone’.
The Hip Couple that live in my building invited me to a very civilized Sunday afternoon of brunch followed by perusing an “Open Studio” of resident artists’ galleries. I was super excited! I love brunch and art! Especially when it’s all located on gritty Spring Garden Street in sunny Philadelphia.
Outfest was fabulous, but what would be more fabulous then then these two guys working the gayborhood!
The phrase “We are everywhere” has become something of a cliché, but truth to tell, many of us still don’t quite grasp all the implications of that truth. Here is one: We are managing to get along in neighborhoods that are far from LGBT Meccas.
You know how you walk by a joint on the regular and never try it. You see the joint, but just never get around to going in. Perhaps it’s on some out-of-the-way street that’s on your way to someplace that has nothing to do with food. Well, I’ve been walking by Meme at 22nd and Spruce for a solid two years now and haven’t thought of going there for dinner.

Interview with Michael Beachem of the inaugural class of The Mint Voyagers
Colman Domingo could have been like one of the characters he played in ”Passing Strange,” Mr. Franklin – a gentleman who keeps part of himself in shadow in order to spare himself pain and conform to the world’s expectations. Instead, spurred on by a love-filled upbringing in West Philadelphia, he has chosen to live fully as himself, exploring – and expressing – all the multifaceted reality of his own identity, not to mention those who shaped him and the people he encounters in the world. He tackles all of those all by himself in his solo play ”A Boy and His Soul.” Now Domingo, who has won critical acclaim for his ability to portray a wide variety of fully-fleshed-out characters, is bringing his autobiographical play to the city that shaped him.

Who says the Republican Party is full of right wing nut jobs hell bent on destroying the middle class by crucifying the tax code and obliterating the progressive civil rights movements of minorities by entitling the rich and special interests groups while raping the poor of basic human services in order to send our country back into the dark ages of a bleached white, suburban, empty shell of a country where Stepford wives are the norm and fake smiles only mask the hatred of white bread conformity forced upon them by pseudo-Christian Sharia law?

As much as we fear rejection, it’s still a normal part of life, especially in dating and relationships. Every time you ask someone out on a date or hold back asking, consider just how much the prospect of rejection is influencing your behavior.

How many guys have you seen working out at the gym and showing off those huge biceps and big chest, but wearing long sweat pants in every season of the year, including the hot summer? They look hot until they strip down at the locker room to change and then …Surprise! You knew it! They suffer from a popular condition, CLS (chicken legs syndrome), I call it the lollipop syndrome, because as yummy as they look, after a few licks the only thing left is the stick, but that’s another steamy story…
Outstanding costuming and scenery-devouring performances all but guarantee a highly entertaining experience in this dragtastic science fiction farce.

The partnership of City of Brotherly Love Softball League and The Trevor Project at first seemed like an unlikely pairing. The C.B.L.S.L. won the bid to host this year’s softball world series in Philadelphia, and The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.

The SlutWalk protest marches began on April 3, 2011 in Toronto, Canada and became a movement of rallies across the world. The rallies began when Constable Michael Sanguinetti, a Toronto Police officer, suggested that to remain safe, ‘women should avoid dressing like sluts.’
For those of us that have come out of the closet and move away from hiding our sexual identity to those that are around us, the memory of what it means to be in the closet becomes more distant with time as we become more comfortable with our sexuality. However, in doing so and moving past the closet, do we also in turn distance ourselves away from those that are still in the closet?
The man behind the upcoming Fringe show “James Bradford is… THICK!” talks comedy, songwriting, and reality television with PGC.
When top brass says “jump” you ask “how high?” When top brass says “shoot” you shoot. When top brass says, “protect your brothers” they never said “just the heteros”, they meant everyone! And no one had a problem, nor should there have ever been a question about your sexuality in the military.
I remember going to the barber for a haircut with my father when I was a boy. I grew up in Rising Sun, Ohio, a small town with a general store, a lonely post office, and only one barber. I must have been about 9 or 10 years old. I don’t remember much about the barber himself or the shop except for the traditional, red and blue swirled barber’s pole and the smell of overly-applied aftershave. The most significant part about getting a hair cut was being touched by a man.

What do you get when five non-profit organizations, a handful of volunteers, and two trail blazing super heroes come together in the basement of an inner city church? “A mash up,” called Q-Spot. “It’s like community center meets nightclub, minus the alcohol and plus extra fun.”
We’re poring over the trailers of the upcoming film fest to see what stands out. Ready. Set. Snap judgment!
Porn Star François Sagat will be at QFest 2011 on Saturday, July 16,
As per being a Political Science major, I am often challenged to view the world from a completely different point of view separate from my own preferences in order to fully understand political questions. That said, I am well aware that not everyone is either learned nor interested in anything politically related and would rather stay away from all talk or reference to such topic so as to keep face, but that certainly doesn’t mean that when push comes to shove they don’t have an opinion after overcoming the utter embarrassment they have of not exactly knowing what’s going on in the world, which is ok in normal everyday life, but doesn’t grant you the right to make false accusations as if you do know the in and out intricacies of US affairs.

When was the last time you did something new that you talked about for weeks to come? Are you tired of the same old faces and scene? Do you want to take advantage of gorgeous summer weather dancing your ass off to the best music from the last three decades all the while enjoying the views of the waterfront? Let’s go. I mean it. That’s an order. Oh, and save a dance for me.
Let’s talk about marriage and children
Being arrested can be frightening, but what are your rights when the cops come to your door.
If you’re reading this, I have some news for you. You haven’t been Raptured. I know. I’m as surprised as you are. I was all set to ditch my pudgy corporeal form and get whisked up to heaven in an incorruptible, and presumably toned, body, to spend the rest of eternity chugging mimosas and learning to play rock songs on the harp. Alas, we were not the chosen ones, and now we’re stuck here to face the storms, earthquakes, hurricanes, and whatever other geologic activity and weather patterns that once represented natural phenomena but are now gleaming signposts of the approaching apocalypse.
Losing someone close to you can be devastating, but complications come when legal issues arrise

So what’s love got to do with it, Tina? To quote Ms. Turner, ”It’s physical, only logical, you must try to ignore, that it means more than that.”
I’m not a huge beach guy. I mean, it’s really pretty to look at. But even when I go with the most seasoned beach lovers, I still get impatient, sweaty, coated in sand and just generally irritable. A walk down to the ocean really just involves jellyfish, seaweed and shells ripping up my feet. Sorry. I can deal, I just don’t love it.

The summer is coming very soon, and we all want to be in the best shape possible to flaunt our sexy bodies at beach. We can’t deny that we find attractive a nice, round, juicy butt, and regardless of your sexual position, you can have a BIG BOTTOM too.
If you want something done right, send a lesbian, gay man drag queen to do the job. I review the weekly Dollhouse Review with Mimi Imfurst
One of your recent polls asked: ‘Which causes you the most anxiety around sex?’ and I was surprised by my own answer: ‘the psychology.’ I have always really enjoyed sex, and sex with my current boyfriend has been the best I’ve had to this point. However, we’ve been together for about a year and a half and I it is gradually getting harder to focus on the act and keep my mind from wandering. I start thinking about what I’m thinking about… I’ll be approaching orgasm thinking ‘Is it sick for me to picture having sex with someone else right now? What does that mean about our relationship?’ What do you recommend for the overly analytic fornicator?”
Hey drag racers! RuPaul has chosen America’s next drag superstar. Do you think Raja was the right queen for the job?
Several of you beloved readers/listeners have tipped me to the latest findings from OkCupid: a series of awesome charts that demonstrate a variety of fascinating correlations between lifestyle, age, appearance and sexuality that uses the millions and millions of OKCupid’s dating site members as subjects.
As a member of a family consisting of siblings that cover the range of autism from Aspbergers to Manic-Depression to Downs syndrome, I have witnessed the cruel and hateful things that can and are said to belittle a person simply because they are different and have spent too many nights worrying about my own siblings’ personal safety at school.
Spring is the best weather for being gay, in and out of drag. Not only because you can read people for trying to wear the same Old Navy summer clothes they tried to adorn themselves with last year (and always too early-gays start wearing flip flops the second the winter ice melts), but also because it’s pageant season!
A little while back, I wrote a bleeding-heart essay about the use of the fag word in comedy. After that, life somehow continued and I kept on doing comedy, performing at the shows I co-host as well as a handful of open mics in the city. And the homophobic crap really never stops flying.
If you are of a certain age – somewhere around mine, say – you probably wrestled with your sexual orientation as you came of age, much as I did. Many of those in my generation worried whether our parents would accept us if we told them we were gay or lesbian. Many of us felt profoundly alone in being attracted to members of our own sex, and most of us feared that our classmates in school would pick on or ridicule us if we revealed our secret.

As my first assignment for the fabulous PhillyGayCalendar, I went to Camp Tabu at, well, of course, Tabu, in the gayborhood.
Hey drag racers! This week the ladyboys were hooked up with some manly jocks to transform into their drag sisters.
There is a common, immature fantasy about relationships that reduces love down to dependency and assumes our insatiable neediness. Many of us love this fantasy and in fact are quite addicted to it. I like to call it the Knight-in-shining-armor syndrome or the Jesus-boyfriend disorder. We pretend there is one, unique, and perfectly looking person destined by divine graces who will finally love us rightly, so then we can feel whole and complete forever. (Insert sounds of angelic choir here.) Think of it as Jesus meets Cinderella. By definition, it’s about relationship as savior and assumes we all need saving.
This Wed, April 6th at 8pm, Pussy Faggot! comes to the Trocadero for an inaugural visit to the City of Brotherly and Sisterly Love. The brain child of former Philadelphian, Earl Dax, Pussy Faggot! promises a tantalizing array of drag, performance and visual arts, DJs and provocateurs thrown together in a cacophonous symphony of revelatory experience. If you are looking for an event sure to send you flying over the hump or simply warm you up for a promising spring weekend, this is the event for you.
This week’s challenge involved creating 3 separate looks, including one outfit made entirely out of hair.
In case you haven’t noticed from signs sprouting in windows, there’s a primary election just around the corner. In addition to deciding whether Mayor Michael Nutter deserves a chance at a second term in office, we will be voting for candidates for City Council, row offices and judgeships. I had the chance recently to meet one of those judicial candidates, and I think you should get to know him better too.
I’m meeting my boyfriend’s parents for the first time. They don’t know we’re both HIV+. I’m out to virtually everyone I know while he’s out to what seems like only me. When’s a good time to tell them I’m positive?
Soon-to-be-sex savvy Philadelphians gathered at the Danger Danger gallery on March 11th for ‘Dancing With Myself: A Celebration of Solo Sex.’ The event was masterminded in every sense of the word by Screw Smart, the self-described queer, sex-positive sedutainment group that has been spicing up stages and demonstration rooms since its inception in 2009. (That’s sex-education-entertainment for those of you looking to rock the scrabble board later tonight.)
It’s time to lip sync for your life! This week, the ladyboys recorded their own versions of Ru’s new song in different genres, before performing it in front of a live audience.

There’s nothing more powerful than the approval, support, and encouragement from a parent; conversely, there’s nothing more devastating than a parent’s neglect or absence. This idea holds especially true if you’re a gay man trying to create sustainable relationships with other men.
This week the contestants had to read each other and then had the chance to become stand up comedians. Find out what Chante and Sashay have to say!
Hey Drag Racers! What do you think of Season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race? Check out what we think and then sound off!
There has been more farewell shows at Q Lounge than Cher has ever seen-yet the doors remain open. Just to dispel the myth-YES! Q LOUNGE IS REMAINING OPEN!
The other night at a comedy show, two of my peers used anti-gay epithets from the stage. And it wasn’t in the context of some brilliant bit of satire. It was just, "What a faggot" and "that guy’s being a fag." I sat through three utterances and then I got up and walked out. Before too long, I had to come right back, though, because I was set to host another comedy show at the same venue afterward. It was awkward. One of the comics who used the epithets offered an apology, but I didn’t let him off easy, because he said things like "You didn’t have to walk out" and "I’m sorry you were offended."
It was just Valentine’s Day, which is supposed to be the most romantical of days, right? Then why did my brother just get dumped by his live-in girlfriend and why have two of my coworkers just broken up with their boyfriends in the last week? What gives, yo?
Welcome readers to my first fitness page. I hope that you follow my advice to build a better lifestyle through knowledge of training techniques, healthy foods, supplements and nutritious recipes.
How would Carrie Bradshaw put it? “Friendships are like strappy sandals. They carry you through life, they bring comfort, they broadcast the colors of your personality to the world, but sometimes, even your favorite pair of strappy sandals can wear out, or worse, go out of style.”
It’s not often that a rock musical asks it audience to ponder the end of days. Yet Coming: A Rock Musical of Biblical Proportions not only challenges assumptions of good and evil, but offers original music and choreography to gets its point across.
Community activists have a history of mainstreaming the marginalized, sheltering the dispossessed, and empowering the powerless. Gloria Casarez has followed this path all the way to City Hall, where, as Mayor Michael Nutter’s director of LGBT affairs, she has one foot in the corridors of authority and one still in the activist tradition.
Gordon Schwinn, the lead character in William Finn’s ‘A New Brain’, is fighting to stay alive from the moment he first sets foot on stage. The musical, which is being given an invigorating, insightful local production by Plays & Players, follows Gordon as he faces hospitalization and surgery for a seemingly terminal brain defect, all while struggling to continue his craft of songwriting and balance his fraying relationships. Just another fun-filled evening of singing and dancing, right?
So, it’s 2011. Janurary is off to a roaring start and the city is full of crisp air and new beginnings. It’s hard for me not to get overwhelmed, walking around with wide-eyes and thin skin all the time. I love this city. The rush and noise of it Market Street, and the quiet of the Free Library. I love the smells of Reading Terminal Market and finding small pieces of the city to make mine. There are things about the city that are new and scary to me, but I love those things for how deeply they make me feel, for new experiences, for taking me outside of my comfort zone and giving me perspective.
Now that “don’t ask, don’t tell” has been officially buried, it’s worth reflecting on a significant difference between the LGBT civil rights movement as it has evolved and the one that made it possible for me to live as I have as an African-American so far.
Though snow blankets a massive swath of the nation, this month of January is possibly harshest on the Great White Way, as productions shutter for good rather than face the cold post-holiday season of decreased attendance and diminishing returns. This year was particularly unkind, cutting down shows both star-studded and barebones. Indeed, the only sure-things right now are the warhorse family musicals and, improbably, Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark, which, at a cost of $65 million and counting is Broadway’s most expensive show ever. Budgets and special effects are considerably more modest a few miles southward where Philadelphia’s Mauckingbird Theatre Company’s production of [title of show], a musical with 4 actors, one instrument, and no airborn superheroes, opened on Wednesday.
For a long time I felt this way. Thankfully my fiancee is the shit and we both kind of admitted being scared of only being with one person for the next 50 years, so we made some “changes”. It has honestly made our relationship stronger and more loving to “date as a couple” (in her words). Anywho….thought you might want to give
That’s right: I’m a homemaker. With Dick off working all the hours God sent, leaving early in the morning for real estate or construction duties, coming back in the afternoon for a costume change, and then leaving again to wait tables until nighttime, it’s up to me to keep the house running as smoothly as possible. Unfortunately, I am pretty ill-equipped for the job
If you’ve walked on 12th Street in the gayborhood in the past few months, you probably noticed a new restaurant has recently opened its doors! Tweed Restaurant opened late last year at 114 S 12th Street, the third restaurant in this location in at least that many years. After a list of failed restaurants in the same location, it bears asking, “Is this location cursed?”
I chatted with the VIP’s of the Gayborhood to see what they had in store for the gay kids in 2011.
The number one New Year’s resolution this year among my pals seems to be to find love. To settle down, stop fucking around and to find “The One” and I not against any of that except that I find that most gay men act like drowning victims when it comes to approaching relationship. Clinging for dear life onto the first sign of an available man like white on rice as if their ovaries have gone bad and they would never be able to have sex past the age of 40.
Happy New Year! It’s time for a change – time to join a gym and break-up with your boyfriend. Maybe you already broke up over the holidays. I seem to recall hearing a statistic about more relationships end during holidays than other times of the year. “Honey, happy holidays and by the way I’m leaving you.”
In the spirit of the holidays I asked the gay royale of the Gayborhood who’s been naughty and who’s been nice, and what they hope to find under their tree this holiday season.
There’s a perception that men are drawn to simple graphic, visual sexual images and women are drawn to stories with elaborate settings and complex dynamics between the characters. Whoever put this collection of short erotic stories together totally agrees with that… but they also like a good finger fuck.
How important is manscaping when you are in a relationship?
John Caputo is Q Lounge & Kitchen’s jack of all trades. As general manager and managing partner, the 32-year-old does it all — from booking DJs to planning events. His goal: to get the community out at Q Lounge every night, not just Friday and Saturday. It’s a 7-day-a-week job…and it doesn’t always leave much time for dating. But a former Philadelphia Mr. Gay with years of industry experience under his belt just might be the hometown hero we’re looking for.
There’s a major revolution going on, kids, and its time you became apart of it. It began in South Philly…
I’ll keep it short and simple: why is my girlfriend so clingy?
Grindr is addictive. It has become a worse distraction for me than Facebook. It is as if I don’t already have a thousand other more useful things that command my attention. But every time my eyes flicker to my iPhone, I can’t help but press that yellow square bubble with a black mask in the center.
Imagine some terrifying and unnecessary hypothetical situation where you are forced to choose between being able to experience the pleasure of sexuality and being able to experience the pleasure of music.
If my boyfriend and I we were characters in a newspaper comic strip, we would be The Lockhorns, as opposed to the cherubic ”Love Is…” nudists. That’s just about all you need to know going in.
I am in awe of how we return to loving and opening to new relationships after all the endured hurts, missed opportunities, and past failures. If you’re too young to know yet or have been lucky enough to be spared – warning, warning – heartbreak is on the horizon. Sorry to be the messenger, but everything ends. And if you’re a bit older, having already experienced the loss of a lover or two or many, you too can point to scars that conclude with reasons.
In honor of Transgender Awareness Week, even the most heart-of-gold LGB person may not fully understand how difficult it is to be a transgender person. Coming out is only a small fraction of the quiche. That’s why I’ve decided as my own little ode to Transgender Awareness Week to list Thirteen Easy Steps to Becoming Transgender!
So, a couple of years ago, I had the awesome pleasure of attending Philly Zine Fest. One of the most interesting people I met was my table-mate. This cool, queer, femme comic book artist with a cursive (!) typewriter. On and off, I kept up with Sassafrass Lowry’s various projects through blogs and the zine community, but recently was hugely impressed with the scale and scope of a book she compiled about queer homelessness. I think it’s such an important issue, relevant and often overlooked. Sassafrass was kind enough to answer some of my questions.
I’m about to talk some shit on Cee-Lo’s catchy-as-hell tune, Fuck You. Gasp and clutch the pearls, but it’s happening.
Last Saturday night, Mr. Gay USA opened to a trilogy of Gaga songs with sexy dancers, an amazing drag performance and a complimenting brass section behind her. Stunning performance aside, is there a need for a Mr. Gay USA? How is this night going to be different from any other big party that comes to Voyeur?
These boys have flown in from all over the country to compete for the title os Mr Gay US 2010 – who will it be. Miss Information sits down and talks with them all and gives you a behind the scenes peak!
Our twenties are all about transformation. We choose careers. We enter into long-term relationship(s). We rent/buy our first apartments. We win Mr. Gay titles. Well, maybe that’s not all of us. But 20-year-old Michael Probe can boast such an accomplishment…and he went through a transformation all his own to score the sash.
Queer in small towns isn’t the same as gay in a city like Philadelphia. Community is less about sharing resources and stories, about forming friendships and families, and sustainable long term partnership in small towns. It’s more about survival, and what you sacrifice for some sense of identity.
Let me introduce you to Night Kitchen Bakery. Owned by Chef Amy and Johnny Cakes. This dynamic duo, husband/wife team just love the gayz! But enough about them, let’s talk about their cakes, their brownies, their cookies, their endless list of awards.
Had someone told my 1970s self that three decades hence, the issues we as LGBT people would be fighting for the hardest would be the right to serve in our nation’s armed forces and the right to marry, I would have laughed that person out of the room.
Carrie, now showing at Underground Arts at the Wolf Building, tells the familiar story of a ridiculed teen with telekinetic powers. The Brian De Palma film and Stephen King novel by the same name depicts the protagonist in a dramatic light, portraying a tale of hurt and revenge. Erik Jackson’s stage adaptation accomplishes the same task, but with a lot more humor.
I sat down with the amazingly funny super lesbian Suzanne Westenhoefer as she got ready for her show in Philadelphia on Saturday
Listen up all you beautiful lesbian ladies of Philly – Come out to the Scene Party
Once while on a first date, I was asked, ”What do you want when having sex?” I made a couple of jokes about sex, trying to avoid having to be vulnerable. Then he launched into an overly confident speech about his accomplished sexual prowess, while mentioning his penis size more than once. I thought, who are you kidding Stud? You’re just as sexually uncertain as anybody.
My most recent stop in the Gayborhood was Amis. I’d been for dinner and have heard people rave about their brunch. Amis was A MISs for brunch.
The recent bullying and suicides of Tyler Clementi, Asher Brown, Seth Walsh, and Billy Lucas four gay teenagers whose lives were cut short is just senseless. It is disheartening to learn that in this day and age, our youth are still plagued by homophobia that is rooted in ignorance.
In two weeks I will be walking around Fairmount Park to support and remember those who are infected or affected by the HIV virus. I have certainly been affected by the epidemic. I took my first HIV test when I was seventeen. I remember feeling so nervous and thought that my life would be over if the test came back positive. But nonetheless, I couldn’t quite wrap my head around living with HIV.
Like Carrie Bradshaw and Monolos, books are what makes me happiest. I love books. The texture, the smell, the sound of pages turning. I love the static quiet and still air in bookstores and libraries, even comic book shops. I love the way standing in a room of books makes me feel like nothing is out of my reach. That I could learn anything, with enough time and effort, become a self-educated expert on any subject. As a card-carrying member of the gay lady club, of course GLBTQ fiction and history hold a special place in my heart.
Actor/writer James Ijames has a busy year. The out Philadelphia transplant and Temple University grad appeared in a number of regional theater productions, including a celebrated staging of Tony Kushner’s epic Angels in America, in which Ijames played Belize. Later in the year Maukingbird Theater Company premiered The Threshing Floor, his one-man show about out writer James Baldwin. In August, he was announced as one of 5 finalists for the F. Otto Haas Award for Emerging Theater Artist. The recipient will be announced on October 4 at the Barrymore Awards. He was gracious enough to talk with me about his year, his play and what being gay and a person of color means to his art.
Dear Timaree, I have a problem that I think other men might have as well. I like hand jobs and blow jobs, sometimes in the same session. Is there a really good, slick lubricant I can put on myself that doesn’t taste like diesel fuel to my partner? Keep up the fabulous work.
Everyone is angry over the recent suicide of the young gay man at Rutgers – but yelling isn’t helping!
How many of us took Boyfriend 101 in school? I bet the number is low. (Drunken, late nights experimenting with other boys don’t count). We plan for our education and prepare for our careers, yet when it comes to relationships some of us give more conscious thought to buying a new pair of jeans. I often meet men who say they want a relationship and yet have few skills and limited awareness about how to create it. It seems many of us gay men know little about emotional exchange, vulnerable disclosure, or power struggles. If we want good relationships, then we have to ask ourselves, what is healthy relating and how do we nurture it in our lives?
I’m in the process of coming out as lesbian and need some help. I’m in my early thirties and have never even approached being involved in the gay scene. I started to realize my orientation a few years ago, but was very traditional-minded and never thought I would be able to live any other way. But it’s important to me that I not waste any more time and begin living the life I want. I found stuff online about how to come out to your friends and family and while the conversations have not always been easy, I feel good about being able to be honest. What remains for me is finding lesbian and gay friends and learning how to approach women. I don’t know any gay people my age in my social network, other than a couple acquaintances. How do I go to a lesbian bar and meet people?
I met most of my best friends on OKCupid.com. True, it’s ostensibly a dating website, but there’s such a thin line between friends and more than friends, it seems as good a place as any. It’s full of guys I like and who are like me, plus as an added benefit it’s one of those reputable dating sites where you won’t see someone’s junk before learning their name.
Last Saturday night I witnessed an act of violence that shook me to the core. A transwoman approached us dripping in blood after having been attacked in the gayborhood.
’54: All Together Equal’ opened this week at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, showing the talent of young Temple University students. The play is a series of 17 vignettes inspired by the hit musical, “Show Boat” addressing the theme of equality.
I moved to Philadelphia a little over a week ago from a small town in southwestern Virginia. Philadelphia isn’t the only city I’ve lived in, but it’s certainly the biggest. I knew that I loved Philly the first time I visited, and when I knew that I wanted to move.
Isn’t it funny how everyone raves about masculine bottoms but no one talks about the sissy top? I recently heard the term ‘Social Bottom.’ The term really struck a chord with me and I have been pondering on it till now because, OMG, I am a social bottom.
At some point during the week of September 13th, gay owned and operated Philly Cupcake will begin giving the passers-by on 12th Street a Cupcake Peep Show! Not even a year old and already getting so big! Philly Cupcake is expanding into an additional 500 square feet of space on 12th Street.
When you enter the cavernous warehouse performance space currently housing “Sanctuary” the extremely sexy new piece by out choreographer Brian Sanders’ JUNK, the ushers dutifully warn “If you sit in the first two rows you’ll get wet. Very wet.” This writer is too much of a gentleman and the piece is far too good to stoop to doubling that entendre. Resisting, however, will be hard. Er, difficult.
There’s a conspiracy happening in the gayborhood. It’s a conspiracy to fatten up the gays! They’ve put 10 – that’s right 10 dessert centric eateries in a 6 square block radius!
As long as you’re discussing interesting studies, might we get your thoughts on this little gem related the female enthusiasm for sex to red wine consumption. Also, what is the Female Sexual Function Index?
At one point during “Drunk Enough to Say ‘I Love You’?”, Caryl Churchill’s caustic allegory currently on-stage at the Walking Fish Theater, one character discovers an ability to control the fates of others. He suddenly declares, “God must have so much fun!”
I understand that your shows and parties are also fundraisers to help you in your running battle with the owner of Albert’s on Grant Avenue in the Northeast, where you had been operating the first successful gay nightspot in the Northeast until Albert Buoncristiano locked you out in a rent dispute. I sympathize with your plight and understand the frustration and anger you feel at how he has treated you. I would, however, like to offer a suggestion at this point…
Quince Productions is hitting hard once again with a double feature of sorts of Just Say Love and Beirut. Lucky enough to catch them both in one night, directors Daniel Student and Rich Rubin take the audience on a pleasant trip.
For 35 years, Billy Carroll has been doing just that. Moving crowds and telling stories with musical combinations, manipulating energy levels to provide unforgettable nights. He is a DJ that specializes in versatility, and, like a true renaissance man, he refuses to pigeonhole himself. Billy has traveled the world from Philly to LA to China, and his formative years afforded him the unique opportunity to moonlight as a guest DJ at perhaps the birthplace of the true music scene, the legendary Paradise Garage.
I review the glittery-yet-subdued space that is Q Lounge + Kitchen at 13th and Locust. I am pleased to report that not only were my assumptions proven correct, the new owners have dramatically improved the restaurant they inherited.
A 6+ year relationship ended early last year, and recently i’ve moved toward becoming “official” with one person after spending a year on my own, exploring, etc….She’s very sweet and we get along great and we have a mutual friend whom i have always been very friendly/flirtatious, but nothing has ever happened. Lately they go out on weekends and talk about me…. I’m just wondering if this is dangerous territory for me, despite the potential awesomeness that could (and most definitely would) ensue. If this turns threesome-y, I want to know potential dangers, etc…I don’t need to do ANYTHING to make it happen, I’m asking you basically if you were me what would you do?
As a DJ, I very rarely go out to listen to other DJs. Some might call me jaded. They’re probably right. But, no matter what social anxieties dog me, I always make it an effort to hear Eddie Elias. Simultaneously dark and uplifting, DJ Eddie Elias is a unique force in New York’s dance music scene. He’s been gracing Philadelphia with his unique flavor for just about a year at Voyeur, the city’s most upfront nightlife experience, with largest dancefloor and best sound in the city, hands down.
Is there an update to the rule of how many dates you should go on before having sex with someone? I don’t just ask to be funny- it’s really easy to mess up and hook up too quickly or to waste a ton of time. Is there a magic number that will keep you safely between a short-term hookup and the friend zone?
There is systemic problem of minimizing females in movies in favor of a male-centric and male-oriented model of filmmaking. And it’s not just in the slasher flicks, shoot ’em ups and the dumb frat comedies. It’s even kids movies.
With over 120 feature films, short films, parties, panels, programs and other miscellaneous events to choose from over the next two weeks, planning your Philadelphia QFest itinerary can sometimes be a daunting task. In an effort to help your ticket-buying decisions, I have listed five particularly exciting screenings below, featuring some of the year’s most acclaimed gay-themed films. These five are NOT TO BE MISSED!
Kelly Burkhardt is the Managing Director of TLA Video, Programmer for QFest 2010 as well as a local film maker of such films as Tremble and Spark. She has been working with Qfest since 2003 and has a true love of film. How better to give PhillyGayCalendar a rundown of the best films for the ladies for the 2010 QFest Film Festival
It was in 1979 that Ed Hermance moved Giovanni’s Room bookstore from a building on Spruce Street where the Kimmel Center sits now to its current digs at 12th and Pine. Woody’s, one of the oldest gay bars operating under the same name in the city, opened the next year, and from those seeds, a regional Mecca grew.
I saw this documentary about people who think they’re in love with objects. This one woman even married the Eiffel Tower. Are these people serious? Do they just want attention? And what do you say to those who say that allowing gay marriage will let people like this marry their furniture or cars? Isn’t this proof they’re right?
How I spent Philadelphia Gay Pride 2010.
It’s a big weekend for pride, and our collective pot is filled to brimming with festivities to choose from. For your Arts & Entertainment pleasure, Alejandro humbly submits these two must-see events that feature the work of local members of the LGBT community and also raise funds for charitable causes.
My friend just got engaged to someone I think he should break up with. All the times I’ve hung out with them, this guy’s given me the creeps. I think he’s weird and not very nice and a total step backwards for him. I never said anything about it to him when they were just dating. But now that it’s so serious, I feel like I HAVE to do something. How do I bring this up to him? If this goes badly and they have to divorce, I would feel terrible to have just stood by and let it happen.

Lady Gaga and Cyndia Lauper do a makeover on a shocked fan. A harried receptionist at the American Sperm Professionals of America accidently drinks some of her company’s product. And then there’s the latest installment of the outrageously popular Gaga Vlog hosted by Lady Bling Bling and her associate, Focus.
Most of the Best Actress winners in the past decade have walked away with a failed relationship. Is this a curse?
May the best woman win! With five drag queens left in the competition, the time is ripe to add some RuPaul’s Drag Race recaps to your calendar. And this week, there was no lack of ripe fruit on the runway, as Ru introduced her squirrelfriends to the ‘mos of Stonewall Riots past.
Friendship as much as love of music is the glue that binds the singers in PGMC to one another and to the organization. It’s quite fitting, then, that next month, we will present a concert that focuses on how that glue works – and what happens when someone comes unstuck.
“I was reading a CNN article on 10 years of Viagra, and they said that prior to the drug, options for ED treatment included ‘penis injections.’ Is that as awful as it sounds? What’s in these things?”
I got on top off him and laid him down as my body language said: ‘I understand the freak in you, now please take me and don’t go slow.’ Beaming with confidence and a boner to match, he ripped open a Trojan. Round one was finally in commencement – underwear helmet and all.
Like many, I was trying to find something different to do on this Valentine’s Day. So my girlfriend and I went to a WWE Raw wrestling match at Wachovia Center. Not everything new one does has to involve infidelities, group sex, latex and mingled fluids.
About 3 years ago, I noticed this red bump on the head of my dick. It didn’t hurt or itch. It actually looked like a little pimple. I went to the doctor eventually. It came back that I had “HSV2” … they told me it was the genital herpes virus. I was kind of freaked out, but mostly I was confused. I didn’t know what that really meant or what was going to happen to me.
A successful palate cleansing gives you the required distance from your former lover and sets the tone for the next few dates. After all, nobody wants the imprint of their ex’s dick as the last impression of somebody hitting the spot down there.
Do you find yourself snacking or going back to your bad eating habits? Have you skipped a day or two or week at the gym? Have you not gotten 8 hours of sleep every night like you said you would? People fail because they want things and they want them now.
This cupcake bakery made a splash from the day it opened last fall, transforming a nondescript hole-in-the-wall bakery into an explosion of pink and French Provincial.
I get that the event is, in essence, our nation’s annual holiday of Straight Man Fest, even though absolutely everyone watches it. We all eat wings, let out particularly stinky farts and yell at our flat screens. I dig it. But this year’s ads had an unmistakable pattern of trying to empower straight men (through shopping) that struck me as surprising. I had no idea the boys around me were feeling so castrated.
Eliminate processed foods, find out your BMR, limit salt intake, restore your body with the “good stuff and drink water .
I remember my first time hearing about Adam4Adam. I was a sophomore in college and as naïve as Rose Nylund. I didn’t know a single thing about the internet fucking “dating” culture and if I did I would’ve exited stage left – way left.
“My girlfriend and I have been dating for over a year and a half. We live together and have a great relationship. The problem is our sex life, which was great early on but has fizzled in the last 10 months. The main problem is her really low sex drive and it has become a major issue in our relationship. We never have sex more than once a week but the dry-spells have been lasting over a month more recently. I didn’t get fat, I didn’t get any worse looking, I didn’t stop treating her well, and I think our relationship in general has gotten a lot stronger over the last 10 months. I know her stress level is high but the low libido has been difficult for me to adapt to. I struggle to talk about this with her because although we DO discuss the lack of intimacy, everytime I bring up the subject, I feel like I put too much pressure on and make the situation even worse. I’ve found myself getting irritable and more on-edge with her because I want to have sex more often so I would do anything to help the situation improve. She’s only 26, Timaree… what the hell should I do?”

Judge Dan Anders currently sits as a Court of Common Pleas Judge. He recently talked to Get REAL about his experiences in law, politics and the LGBT community.
“I know you’re not like the Ambassador to Gay or anything, but maybe you have some insights: why do gay boys think they can grab women and sexually harass them and it’s ok because they’re gay? I have a few different gay guy friends who do this. We go out and they grab my boob in the midst of conversation, trying to be funny. Or they spank my ass as I walk by. It would be outrageous if a straight guy did it, but since they’re gay I’m supposed to be ok? What is up with that?”
Enjoy the holiday’s with a free download of Lady Gaga’s new Christmas song!
There you have it; Lady Gaga in a nutshell. She’s fluent in Hitchcock, enjoys the phallus, keeps her double-entendres as subtle as a nine-iron applied directly to the forehead, is explicitly aware of herself and her perversion(s), and … she’s just like everybody else.
Is Tiger Woods destroying marriage, or is he doing what marriage is meant for?
Tony was born into an athletic family with a sports star father and equally able-bodied uncles and cousins. After college, Tony moved to Philadelphia and came out.
There’s nothing quite like a national awards show to remind me about the beautiful, liberal bubble of reason I inhabit. After a night that I only knew about in retrospect, America is evidently appalled by the semi quasi sorta- lewd performance of American Idol alum, Adam Lambert.
“I’ve had something weird happen a couple times recently. After my fiance and I have had sex, I started crying uncontrollably. It makes no sense! It was great sex! There was no pain. And I’ve never been raped or abused. It freaked me out and so my fiance was really worried. What is going on?”
I don’t believe you ever really get over an eating disorder and I constantly have to be careful… even today
In less than a week, we could witness yet another historic event in a year that has been packed with them: the first U.S. state to affirm gay marriage via popular vote.
Seems I can’t turn around without hearing news about a new hot party, event, club, exhibit, or activity. It seems that our local impresarios, promoters, and culturati must have heard all that grumbling about how tired the scene in Philadelphia had gotten and all at once decided that it was time to Do Something About It.
Awkward kids huddled together in gym class, their destiny determined by the order in which they’re drafted to a team. Non-athletic, flimsy boys die a little deep down inside every time a girl is picked before them. Where stereotypes and cliques are the ruling order, every terror of adolescence is played out in a game of grade school dodgeball.
Well Miss Information was back being a VIP again this weekend. And who wouldn’t want me at their event, I AM fabulous! I attended the sneak peak to the new club Q Lounge!
So this weekend, Miss Information decided to step out! So much was going on that I was not gonna sit at home with reruns of Saturday Night Life (which was so fuckin…I mean freakin good!) This weekend I grabbed my finest gown, straightened my tiara and headed to a few amazing events….Heroes and Voyeur.
The word voyeur can mean a few things: a peeping Tom, an observer of sensational or sexual subjects, and now Voyeur means Philly’s hottest Gayborhood destination! It will replace Pure as our favorite dance-the-night-away-spot. This is keeping with the many changes and additions going on in the Gayborhood!
In all of the articles you’ve written that I’ve read you’ve never shown any concern with the effect all this graphic sex talk has on kids. I see that your site says it’s for adults only, but you’re part of an overall system of in-your-face sexuality that I see and hear every day. What do you have to say to us parents who have the responsibility to protect our kids?
Timaree answers: “So what’s the deal with Caster Semenya, the runner who is undergoing gender tests? Why would it possibly take so long to establish if she’s actually a she? Can’t a quick look up the skirt settle this?”
Do you recall those golden years when the gay community was all one big happy family, united in pride and support for one another? Neither do I.
People come up to me all the time and say, “I work out every day for at LEAST and hour or more. I feel like I do cardio and weights for hours on end, why isn’t this weight coming off.” Find out my answers!
Local gay bookstore owner talks about fundraising efforts to keep the place open.
I felt like a hypocrite. I felt ashamed. How am I gonna be an HIV educator, teach someone about safer sex, tell them to use condoms, and then not do it myself? What’s the point in working here if I can’t practice what I preach?
If you are like me and adore summer you might need things to look forward to after Labor Day comes to pass. John Caputo, Mr. Gay Philadelphia 2008 and two business partners are already promising us something that will “bump up” the fun this fall. They have taken over Bump at 13th & Locust and plan to revitalize it for all of Philly’s cocktail sippers.
Looking for someone I can talk to on the phone about random things…just how our day was… Someone that I can walk down South Street with, go shopping, go out to eat, not be sexual with each other and both be satisfied…
The following tips will help you take your body a step closer in the right direction to making it look better. Whether you are getting ready for summer, want to stay in shape year round, or want to shape your body up for a special event (think Boys of Summer 2009!)… the following information should be a staple in your healthy lifestyle.
The 2009 World Outgames just wrapped up in Copenhagen. Among the international bevy of athletes flocking to the Danish capital was Ray Boyd, a Philadelphia rower (as well as an accomplished swimmer, runner, cyclist, triathlete, surfer) and Fins Aquatics teammate of mine.
What’s the reality in the search for aphrodisiacs? Are there really substances that can rev up a dead or dying engine? Has the search stopped since science discovered Viagra and Cialis?
Part of TLA Releasing’s Guilty Pleasures, Schoolboy Crush is a visually pleasing look into a Japanese all-boys’ school. After a messy break-up, Aoi hires a young prostitute, Sora, to “comfort” him. Soon, the biology teacher finds Sora in his classes at the all-male prep school.
You’ve got to help me settle a question: a super gross question. When is it necessary for a woman to douche? I’ve heard it’s not something to do on the regular, but I’ve done it a few times when I felt the so-called ‘less than fresh’ feeling. My girlfriend was saying that they wouldn’t be available in stores if they weren’t being commonly used. So what’s the deal?
Another tide has rolled in, bringing with it a slew of new barbecue places in Center City itself: Q Tequila and BBQ in the former Philadelphia Fish & Co. space in Old City, Devil’s Alley on Chestnut near Rittenhouse Square, and now Smokin’ Betty’s, the stylish new restaurant right in the Gayborhood itself.
Our own Jessica Smith reviews some of the great movies from QFest 2009. Plus she will be at the movies reviewing them as the week goes on, so check back often
Question: Bisexuals? What does this have to do with lesbians? Or gays for that matter? The gateway sexual preference? The thing is that homosexuals don’t get to choose, bisexuals do. Thus, did the author of this letter enjoy the taste of semen when she goes down on her girlfriend? Protect yourself. Several times over. The diseases these bisexual men and women pass are large scale.
I’ve been dating a girl who’s bisexual for almost two months now. I’m crazy about her, everything’s clicking, and a few days ago, we officially declared ourselves exclusive. Only problem is we haven’t exactly discussed any “ground rules” – if there are any to be made – covering her bisexuality. I know it goes well beyond some experimental phase and that she’ll always be very attracted to women. I’m okay with that and I certainly wouldn’t want to limit her or deprive her of something that she innately desires, and that I could never physically provide for her myself. But at the same time, I’ve never been in a relationship where other people are fair game, and I have no idea how I’d react to such a situation. Part of me says, hey, it’s just chicks, and that’s always hot, and the other says, um, why can’t I be enough? It’s a tough situation to hash out on my own. Care to help a brother out?
Of course, most of us are disappointed with the California Supreme Court’s ruling on the Proposition 8 case. Instead, we should be energized, because the California Supreme Court actually did us a favor: It handed the issue of marriage equality back to us so we can educate our fellow Americans.
I’m a cute, professional gay man in my late 20s, suddenly single after a two year long relationship. The problem was my boyfriend refused to come out, claiming that he wasn’t gay: that he was straight but just into me. That was fine enough for a long time because I loved him and wanted to be with him, but it became a big problem eventually because I already came out a decade ago and have no interest in hanging around the closet door waiting forever for him to come join me on the outside. I also let it slide because he’s Arab and wanted to respect the cultural differences but it wore on me and eventually I had to give him an ultimatum: be real about our relationship or split. We know how that conversation turned out. Was I wrong? Should I have been more understanding? I miss him and am horny as all get out but the random hook up scene is not making me feel any better.
Fifty teams. Three sports. One weekend. This Memorial Day weekend 2009, the City of Brotherly Love Softball League will host the Liberty Bell Classic; the Falcons Soccer Club will host [yes, another] Liberty Bell Classic tournament; and the Fins Aquatics Club will host Come Out and Swim, its 9th international swim meet.
This past Sunday saw Twisted Life kick off the summer party season with “One Big F&%$in Deck Party” presented by Twisted Life and hosted by Gage Kris. In case you weren’t there, I’ve compiled a handy listicle of some of the highlights.
If you have been out in the Philadelphia gay nightlife scene, you know Natasha Hulme. She has been bartending and hosting fabulous events for years, and she has some of the best stories that you will ever hear about Philadelphia nightlife.
The contests for District Attorney and City Controller are the headline races this time around, and there are also elections for Common Pleas and Municipal Court judges. There are mere days left before the May 19 primary, but that’s still enough time to bring yourself up to speed on what’s at stake.
Brought to you by the charmingly off-hinge imaginations of some of Philly’s Dumpsta Players and featuring work by local artists, Regeneration presents re-imaginings and re-purposed inventions from illustrative typography to ornate wig art.
“I can’t do it anymore: have sex with my partner, that is. When we first got together 8 years ago he wasn’t a health nut or anything, but he was normal weight and very attractive to me. A few years into dating, he started to let himself go: eating too much and never getting any exercise. Three years ago when it became legal here in New Jersey, we had a civil union and since we’ve been married he’s gained probably another 50 pounds. Not only am I not attracted to him anymore but the sex has gone downhill too. He can’t get erections as easily, they don’t stay hard and he’s lazy about how we do it. It’s just not worth it to me anymore. I refuse to fake interest. If he doesn’t care about his appearance, what else can I do?”
I love tennis. It has long been the only sport I can endure to watch on television. Growing up, quite out of character, I welcomed NBC’s mid-summer preemption of “Days of our Lives” in lieu of Wimbledon – an exchange of one sweaty drama for another. In 1993, I was 16, Pete Sampras and Steffi Graf won Wimbledon, and I was going to marry Steffi while having an affair with Pete.
Way back in January when the year was young and everything was new again (again), I answered the call of a rainbow tweet, and the months since have seen my name skyrocket from relative obscurity to supreme upper-tier obscurity, relatively. I’m speaking, of course, of my ongoing tenure as a columnist for PhillyGayCalendar.
If you haven’t been down East Passyunk Avenue lately, you probably are unaware of a quiet revolution under way in South Philly. Under the noses of the old Italian families who have defined the character of this part of the area, the old neighborhood has gotten more multiethnic, more diverse, and maybe even just a bit more upscale.
I was guest at an event on Easter called 101 Temptation. It was hosted by none other than PhillyGayCalendar and NightLifeGay.
It takes quite a lot to get me to battle the seething breeders of South Street, especially on a weekend, but Rich Rubin makes it all worth while.
“Laughing my ass off” has a whole new meaning.
Miss Information is back! Now you might ask yourself, what would draw Miss Information back to writing again – well cute boys of course! NightLifeGay is holding it’s 3rd Annual Mr Gay Philadelphia contest on April 18. Sexy local boys from around the area will compete to wear the crown of Mr Gay Philadelphia and head to LA to represent our loving city for the national competition.
“The girth of my penis is just four inches, so I cannot wear a condom. So I am not able to do safe sex. What should I do?”
With the financial collapse, it isn’t a huge surprise to see people start to leave for more stable positions. But rarely will you see a socially-conscious banker leave the industry to sing about peace. Yes, peace. The last thing most people find on the floors of the New York Stock Exchange.
Reasons why gay culture should not fade away when we still need it. For if that happens, where will future gay generations turn to when they go looking for who they are and where they belong?
For some reason when ever I think of that name the song Young American by David Bowie, but that’s a personal issue. The Ugly American [formerly La Vigna] is out of the way so you won’t just wonder by the place when you’re down town shopping or out bar hopping on a Saturday night.
I’ve head the name 12th Air Command so many times in the years I’ve been wondering Philadelphia. Everyone has something to say about the place. I’ve mostly heard horror stories about it. I was excited to go there having built up this huge idea of what the place was based on hear say
I’ve been with my girlfriend for a little over a year and we get along great. She’s really smart and cool and is an incredibly talented designer and seamstress. I’m constantly blown away by how creative and thoughtful she is. Sounds perfect, right? Except our sex life is awful. She wants it the exact same – every single time. What can I do?”
I descend on 17th and Chancellor at 10:30 looking either ridiculously ferocious or ferociously ridiculous, in a pin-striped fedora and a pair of oversized silver-colored frames that would make even Sir Elton John revolve in his hairpiece. Find out what happens next
Camac Martini Bar is a beautiful little spot located in the heart of Philly’s Gayborhood. The front of the building is a little bit misleading, from the appearance of the dark glass windows you might think it was a classic Philly dive, but when you walk in the door you’re immediately greeted by the glorious smell of brick oven Pizza and scented candles.
I went to Matthew Izzo’s official opening party, two weeks ago for March First Friday. I normally would apologize for the delay but Matthew seems to constantly evolve; thus everyday is an opening. The new space is bigger, warmer. It boasts a wide, wooden, retail floor on the ground level, with a seemingly vintage wood and glass display case, while the stairway boasts an inviting, colorful assembly of vintage art.
I am constantly amazed by kids who are aware of their sexuality and have the courage to come out at an early age. Society isn’t always as thrilled and accepting. Each year there are between 115,000 and 640,000 homeless and runaway LGBTQ youth in this country.
Spinning for well over 30 years, DJ Reenie Kane has helped shape what we know now as gay nightlife. An out lesbian with a partner (the beautiful and widely-loved Adele) of just as many years, Reenie has been making both gay and straight people dance with an eclectic mix and a music catalog that rivals just about anyone in the world.
Two words: mind blowing. Bangkok Love Story brought tears to my eyes while keeping me on the edge of my seat. The story moved at a perfect pace although it sometimes felt like the characters were going through an unlikely series of unfortunate events.
This past Oscar Sunday, Rittenhouse Square played host to The Red Carpet Oscar Party, decidedly not a mere walk through the park! The event was the brainchild of Desiree Hines and Mark Dahl, both of Traverse Arts Project, and both fixtures of everything fun and theatrical in Philly.
If you are into senseless gore and gratuitous nudity, then this is definitely the film for you. Writer and director Ryan Nicholson boasts some of the most bizarre murders ever filmed.
Like just about everyone else visiting this site, I believe gay and lesbian couples should enjoy the same rights, privileges, and protections straight couples get when they marry. But…
I was out with some of my boys the other night and I see a hottie I really want to talk to. I make my way over, start chatting him up and then my friend comes over and cock blocks me. He starts talking to the hottie about some guy I used to date to make it sound like I have a boyfriend and then starts hitting on my hottie. It’s one thing if he’s trying to compete with me over the same boy but he doesn’t even end up asking for his number anyway. It’s like he just wants to stop me from getting it. If I mention something about this to him he acts like it’s my problem and I need to step up my game. What’s his deal?
A month into my very scientific investigatory Thursday Night probe, what have I learned? – That people who go out on Thursday Night are generally in a jovial mood and want to have a good time. Insightful? No. But quite true! Anyhow, this time around I’ve headed to our city’s popular lesbian club, Sisters.
Catherine and her girlfriend opened Teri’s last fall as a tribute to her mother Teri, who bought a former hosiery shop in the Italian Market’s then – dying lower reaches in 1994 with the dream of opening a new restaurant there.
“I love to bailar” is my Latina spitfire sister’s go-to party mantra. And she would feel right at home at Woody’s Latin Night, not just because she’d be partying with her big hermano, but because this weekly Thursday extravaganza boasts one of the loudest, sweatiest, and hip-swaying-est dance parties around.
“The event blends three main aspects of the Fins: swimming, social, and community service.” True dat. I joined the team just a year ago, and it was instant love. I can now run around a speedo in the middle of winter without blasting my heat up or freaking out my cats.
Being positive taught me to just let it all go and become who I really am. I had to accept myself before anyone else would. Now I’m in a pretty good place.
I’m a bisexual woman and I’ve been with my girlfriend for three months. I love her and everything, problem is I don’t love going down on her. She thinks it’s emotional distance, but I really don’t like the way she tastes. She has great hygiene, so that isn’t the problem. How do I tell her without her getting offended?
My second stop on the Thursday Night express also happened to fall on the very night of chic chick Cyoni’s birthday extravaganza. Bearing in mind both the general upper-crust atmosphere of Bump and the sartorial responsibility inherent in attending such a glossy occasion, I switched out my usual ratty jeans/second-hand tee uniform to attend the soiree in a subtly-hued stretch button-down paired with charcoal grey slacks and honest-to-gawd dress shoes.
We have seen an African-American man become elected into Office. Yet besides this revolutionary fact and far more importantly we now have won a president promising something novel: hope, peace and a return to those ideals that made America the Union it is today.
When the Southeast PA gay potluck group the Chester Country Brunch Bunch announced their 20th Anniversary Celebration, which will be happening in West Chester , PA on January 31, they announced that they hired the seasoned stand-up comic Nick Tarr to perform at it.
Black is not only beautiful, it’s also brilliant. But that’s not the message many educated, intelligent black men hear from the popular media. Just ask Gregory Walker, a cultural and civic activist who lives in Washington Square West.
Ever the intrepid busybody and accomplished drinking buddy, I’ve made it my mission to investigate Philly’s Thursday Night lineup, and report back to you the what where when and how much of the evening’s offerings. I do this in humble service to the community, and not because I like to go out and get hosed on weeknights.
The truth is, I’m okay with messing with guys but I am not okay with being judged.
So from what I hear many are expecting much from 2009, whether it’s love, endeavors, or my favorite, FASHION! Word on the street is that many, notably both young and old, are coming OUT the closet now more than ever. Whether this statement is gossip or not, you can answer this hypothesis by simply glancing at your surroundings
So it’s 2009. Congratulations if you’ve made it this far in this climate and were still able to celebrate even if the merriment had to be somewhat fabricated. Personally, I felt none of it real or not. The gooey Christmas feelings and the New Year’s Eve elation of festivity were all completely wasted on me.
Miss Information reviews the must see film ‘Milk’ about gay activist and politician Harvey Milk.
It is not necessary for careful observation to see that no two persons use the exact makeup brand or application. Deanne breaks it all down for you.
Mr. Philadelphia Leather 2008 talks with PGC about his year as a titleholder.
His sound is pretty unmistakable, and chances are you have danced to his music whether you knew it or not. He has made an indelible mark on Philly. I had the chance to catch up with one of the most humble, professional DJs in our fine city just recently.
If your Halloween sucked, that’s too bad ’cause I had the best time ever spending Halloween with Elvira, “Mistress of the Dark”.
Leisha Hailey has a new band. Okay I’ll cut you some slack if you don’t know who Leisha Hailey is. You probably know her as “Alice Pieszecki on the L Word. If you don’t know what the L Word is, you may have to give back your toaster.
The gay, lesbian and trans community have more aid financially for education than ever before. Philadelphia’s rainbow community is no stranger to this with the Sapphire Fund’s Tony Sparacino Memorial scholarship going to Johnny Davenport
Roisin Murphy started her relationship with former boyfriend Mark Brydon by asking what is now a legendary question for her fans: “Do you like my tight sweater? See how it fits my body.” This quote would go on to be the name of the first album created by Moloko, the band that the two created after first meeting.
I normally try to stay away from what everyone else is discussing in the fashion industry, but did you hear about the “colorless catwalk”? And if you haven’t…what rock have you been under.
This past Thursday we were treated to what many people have come to call “The Sarah Palin Show.” I don’t know how many people tuned in to actually watch the debate, as much as see the Governor of Alaska instead of her SNL double! I treated the debate like Class A-entertainment. I dragged the dining table into the living room, had a friend over for dinner then whipped up the most American meal I could think of: steak, potatoes, Caesar salad and cheap, red wine from California.
Have you ever heard the story of the Two-Headed Folk Monster? Does it sound scary? Well, it’s not scary, but maybe you should be scared if you don’t have tickets to The Tin Angel on October 11th to see the dynamic duo Steph Hayes and Adam Brodsky.
One of one of my favorite DJs, and one of the cutest too is New York’s Joe Hickerson who has been steadily making a name for himself first in NYC and more recently across the US and Canada and will be here at Pure on September 25.
Friends and loved ones gathered Friday night at the Mazzoni Center in Philadelphia to honor the late Tony Sparacino. The tribute included the Sapphire Fund’s presentation of the First Annual Tony Sparacino Memorial Scholarship to student John Davenport, and the unveiling of a plague dedicating a procedure room in the Mazzoni Center in Tony’s memory.

A lot of guys think of the top as the “man” – it’s this whole macho thing. I don’t buy it.
If you went to Pure on Friday August 15th for The Boys of Summer party you probably got to play with a nice pair…a nice pair of beach balls that is!
In this little space, I’m going to share my music-related thoughts here and there, from the DJ’s perspective. This week is Lady Gaga, Sundae hits the spot, the hood, and my Top Ten
The father of pop art and celebrity fame, for just being famous, would have been 80 on August 6 but his legend and legacy and his art lives on and on all over the world. There is perhaps no other source, quoted so often than Warhol.
I wasn’t aware of this but apparently every composer has a trunk (or foot locker if you will) of tunes.

Once the lowly men’s footwear was relegated only to the beach, the shower room and the college dormitory and the college campus, now flip-flops have captured the imagination of designers across the industry.
At this year’s Equality Forum National Politics Panel, an attractive young man stood up and announced that he found it easier to be a gay man around Republicans than to be a Republican around the gay community. This is unfortunate.

Color me colorful when it comes to clothing–and many other things in my life. I mean who wishes for a dull life. That’s what the world’s menswear designers are saying these days. Sure you’ll still wear a lot of basic black but you can always spruce it up with one, two or several colors any time.

It was hard convincing him I was for real. I had to keep telling him… “it’s not that I don’t want you, it’s that I don’t want it.”
I’m fascinated by achievements, especially when you’re at the top of your game. And, my guilty pleasure, too, is that I’m also fascinated by a certain type of celebrity. So I’ve had my attention towards the resurgence of interest in Rudolf Nureyev, one of the most flamboyant queers in the history of ballet.
Separation between church and state….really? are you sure?
Philly has a wealth of upstanding Queer DJ citizens. The good news is they all spin rather frequently in our fair city and around the way. You can catch a bevy of them at Emerge on May 2nd at Transit Nightclub and for a tasty bit of Emerge click here: Emerge Promo.

Last night was an emotional victory no matter how you cut it. Pennsylvanians spoke and they spoke loudly. Pennsylvanians spoke not simply in choosing Clinton by a 10 point spread as the Democratic presidential candidate, but also by their demonstrated commitment to the political process. Clinton and Obama aren’t the only ones who are tired; we too survived seven long weeks of campaigning!
Ms. Chelsea Clinton made a second appearance in Philadelphia’s Gayborhood to urge the gay public to support her mother in today’s Primary election. I am just tired. These campaigns have become so Machiavellian. Allegations thrown left, conspiracy theories thrown right. And it is because we are tired of the current administration and we are fighting passionately.
Miss Information is a little pissed about all this. My panties are all in a bunch! And let me tell you why. The one theme I have heard over and over again was “We are sick of these non-issues!” Time for Miss Information to make a stand!
After the last eight years, America desperately needs its next Great president. And fortunately, we will have the opportunity to vote for him. We can not afford to waste this opportunity in history. I will be voting for Barack Obama.

Hillary Clinton said to end her presidential campaign now would be as if “Rocky Balboa had gotten halfway up those art museum steps and said, ‘Well, I guess that’s about far enough.'” She went on to say, “[w]hen it comes to finishing a fight, Rocky and I have a lot in common. I never quit. I never give up.”
I was lucky enough to be treated to a personal appearance by Chelsea Clinton at Woody’s. Chelsea Clinton spoke out of convincingly personal experience, out of love for mother, candidate and country.
Two local forward thinking lesbian religious leaders will be honored by The Shalom Center at The Third Annual Prophetic Voices Celebration Sunday, April 6, 2008.
I think the current Democratic Party presidential race is proving that our democratic process does work. It is working wonderfully. Voters have been given opportunities to give their voice and to make decisions. The real key is that multiple points of view are being heard. Isn’t is a goal of a democracy to give a voice to as many people as possible? Shouldn’t we be embracing this thrilling, albeit complicated, process?
Well if you’re anything like me, you probably have an array of clothes you don’t even recognize, even though you just looked at them last year. Cheeks Studio in Upper Darby, PA was set up quainter than a boutique gay bed and breakfast on a Sunday morning for Steph Hayes’ live recording of her CD “Mostly True Stories.”
With the April 22nd Primaries quickly approaching, Pennsylvania is buzzing. While I’ll be featuring columns on Hillary Clinton leading up to the primaries, regardless of who becomes our president, I am ecstatic that the apathy shrouding this country for the last two terms is lifting and people are engaged in politics again. People care again. People are passionate again.
The place is out of this world. It is positioned perfectly on the corner of 12th and Sansom St. Its large glass windows wrap around the room looking out onto both Sansom and 12th giving a perfect perch for people watching from any corner of the room.
I told him I couldn’t do it that night – I was just too drunk and too sick – but he wasn’t stopping…I was trying to fight him off, but he was a strong guy and I was too weak.
I can’t remember the first time I saw Steph Hayes perform. As a matter of fact, I’ve sadly heard more swooning lesbians talk about her than I’ve seen her live.
Manny Lehman is the central part of many gay community members’ dance memories. He’s spun everywhere from Montreal to Miami; New York to LA. He’s headlined almost every circuit party on the planet. Matthew Ray of HX Philadelphia chatted with Manny from his dreary office in the cold Gayborhood while Manny lounged in his cabin on an Atlantis cruise. Lucky bastard!
What gets to me is gay men talking about trans folks like they’re not “real” men, or “real” women… I’m just like them. I’m not in-between or unfinished or confused…I’m just me.
As I look at the stamp mark on my hand from the door guy at North Star Bar I hope it never comes off. I want it as a reminder. If you were wondering to yourself last night, March 4, 2008, “Where are all the sexy bitches?” I can tell you Gay Philly they were at the MEN show.

My dad was kinda your typical hard-ass conservative father. It’s all about family, getting married, having kids…about being a man. I guess that’s what he meant when he made fun of the gay guys he worked with—they weren’t real men.
Perhaps you think that you are the only Rockband playing, Bowie sing-a-long, Bob Mould loving or even rap loving LGBT citizen in the city. So maybe you still use that hair brush as a microphone belting out tunes in front of the mirror as you get dressed for yet another night out of repetitive club music.
But still, I was hearing it from everywhere else, boys like girls and girls like boys and that’s how it is. I started thinking to myself, maybe if I like boys, maybe I should have been born a girl.

I’ve never been very good at this. Seems like I can’t figure out dating very well, but I can figure out how to have sex. I can figure out how to go meet in a club and hang out for an hour or two, then go fuck, but that’s not really doing it for me anymore
The Misanthrope is the play to see right now. The actors are magnificent and the clothing handsome and rich.
At that time, my whole world was my family and my church. When they talked about gay people it was always them, or those people. It was just assumed that no one in our world could be gay.
