Mr Philly Leather 2018 and Body Image

I recently had someone reach out and tell me, ‘You’re too skinny. I just don’t find you a great Mr Philly Leather.’ I’m not letting it get me down. I’ve learned how to process comments about my body like this and I certainly don’t believe that someone has to be a certain size to be a titleholder.

The Color Purple

The celebrated Menier Chocolate Factory production of The Color Purple, the Musical is now at the Forrest Theatre. Based upon the novel by Alice Walker, The Color Purple, the Musical, has a book by famed playwright Marsha Norman, with music and lyrics by three famous musicians, Brenda Russell, Alee Willis, and Stephen Bray. Look Like Yourself: Rien

I’ve always been a tomboy. From elementary school on, any time I picked my own clothes they were always oversized and typically from the boys department. At some point during college I realized my attraction to women and identified as a lesbian until recently. The label never quite felt right, but I couldn’t put my finger on why that was. Denial was easier than working through it. I did not have many resources and wasn’t comfortable discussing my dysphoria. As I entered adulthood, I began to present myself in a very androgynous way. This helped ease the dysphoria a bit, but only temporarily.

Look Like Yourself: Ollie

I think it was 5 or so, and knowing I wasn’t a ‘girl’ in the way that the other girls in kindergarten were. I didn’t know what the alternative was though, so I just went along with it. I think it probably wasn’t until middle school that I was even introduced to the possibility of trans and non-binary identities, but I didn’t openly identify as nb until sophomore year of college.

Phantom, Paul Taylor, and Janis: The Arts provide reasons to give thanks

There is no better time to give thanks for all that technicians, stagehands, producers, actors, dancers, singers and musicians do for us. The Arts, at their best, provide us with the means to feel and know in a totally different way, and to realize that we are neither powerless nor dumb, and that we have the potential to be great. Find love and joy in the Arts since the Arts bring out the finest qualities within each of us. This holiday season share your joy with your loved ones by taking them to a show, concert, or performance, or by buying them tickets of their own.

Look Like Yourself: Robyn

It was around 4 or 5 I didn’t really fit into my gender and being that I lived mainly with my nieces and aunt’s I never truly had male leadership in my life. By the age of 13-14 I began crossdressing and displaying female tendencies. By age 16-18 I began seeking hormonal treatment.

The Legend of Georgia McBride, a new musical by Matthew Lopez, is now at their Arcadian Stage in Philadelphia until November 27. Instacrush: Garrett Matthews @garrett.matthew

Sean is the 2015 Atlantic Pole Championships Winner and he fills his Instagram with his amazing skills and dance performances. It’s is amazing what he can do when he seems to defy the rules of gravity.

Fringe Review: The Pop Musical Diary of a Gay Man

How do you make the tired tale of “coming out” relevant in 2015? Add uber catchy pop songs sung by amazingly talented people and stick them on a hyper-realistic, by fringe standards, stage. Add some fun light cues along side campy moments that turn into some overly dramatic moments and you’ve got the Fringe show with the longest title (I checked) – The Pop Musical Diary of a Gay Man.

Fringe Review: Purgatory

When the two week stretch of Fringe rolls around I look for something different. I want to feel grossed out, turned on, distressed, fascinated etc. I want to be taken to the edges of my comfort level; I’m reminded of my favorite sub-genre of performance and Purgatory certainly satisfies my need to feel uneasy.

Bud and Marylyns

REVIEW: Bud & Marilyn’s

Are your tastebuds ready for the next big thing in Philly? Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran (Barbuzzo, Jamonera, Lolita, Little Nonna’s) have ventured into the heartland of Wisconsin (Turney’s hometown) for inspiration for their retro-American restaurant, Bud & Marilyn’s.

The Modern Family

For Tina Montgomery and Junior Brainard, a local trans couple, their happy ending is coming in October. While their story may be different from the traditional fairy tale, it brings to light some of the new variations of ‘family.’

REVIEW: Tick Tick Boom

Last week I had a rare opportunity to take in a musical that’s not produced very often – Tick Tick Boom. I had never seen the show before and only knew one song but my partner in crime convinced me that if I loved the pacing and energy of RENT, I’d love Tick Tick Boom.

Light the Lights

One of my favorite things about Philadelphia is the variety of quality entertainment in various venues (most with bars!) It affords me the opportunity to explore new venues and new pieces of art for pretty damn cheap. One of my favorite new forms of entertainment is ‘Light the Lights’ a cabaret that makes use of the uber talented local voices,

Review of TOY 2014

DVLF put together last nights TOY Fundraising event in the smartest way possible. They combined good will, great food, and shiny winter landscape to create a warm and perfect fundraising environment that housed one of the longest Silent Auction tables I had ever seen.

Meet Cherry Pop

CODE:RED was one of the largest AIDS / HIV Awareness events to hit Philly last year, and this year is going to be bigger! I sat down with the event’s creator Michael Mikel Tambon (Drag name Cherry Pop) to talk about his journey and how CODE:RED is working to make Philadelphia a better place.

Will and Anthony Nunziata: ‘Come and join our family after Thanksgiving at the Rrazz Room’

Will and Anthony Nunziata have appeared several times at New York City’s 54 Below. Now, the twin brothers will sing up a storm in New Hope at the Rrazz Room on Saturday, November 29. I managed to catch up with Anthony Nunziata recently. He spoke about twin brother Will, their career, and Anthony’s solo appearance in New York City on November 28, the day before their New Hope premier appearance.

CODE:RED 2014

Cherry Pop and Brandon Robert present the second annual World AIDS day charity event CODE:RED on November 29th, 2014. I had a chance to talk to both Cherry Pop and Brandon Robert about the event, their insights will make your day!

Facebook Against Drag Queens? Think Again!

Facebook recently started forcing Drag Queens to change their personal profile names from their stage names to the legal names. Members of the drag community and some of our allies are calling this “dragphobic” and an assault on the gay community. I’m going to go out on a limb here – and tell you I think drag queens causing a stir over this is, well stupid.

Review: Suspended

I started out the 2014 FringeArts Festival by seeing dicks, abs, and acrobatics with Suspended by Brian Sanders’ JUNK. Sound good, right? I love all three of these things, but melding the three into a single cogent performance may have been an impossible undertaking.

The Weird Beard Revue

Picture it. 7 PM on a Saturday night in Philadelphia. I’d just slipped into the entrance of L’etage, ascended an unassuming flight of stairs and once I reached the top I was transported to the 1920’s with soft lighting and decorative papered walls.

Forecast for Philadelphia: Reigning Royals

On Saturday evening, June 28, 2014, in Philadelphia it was “reigning” royals. At a special pageant, the city’s best and brightest competed for the title of Mr. and Miss Q Spot Philadelphia 2014. In a very close competition in which had us all on the edge of our seats, Stevetta Vinowski and Alice Wills edged out the competition to take the crowns.

NSFW Party

An ever growing cadre of alternative gay parties have been taking form – One of the most successful and steadfast of these parties comes packed as a grittier dance party called NSFW, formed by Paul Blore & Marquise Lee.

What This Whole Gay Pride Thing Means Anyway (To Me At Least)

With June declared as Pride Month by President Obama and the kickoff of Pride Weekend here in Philadelphia, I thought I’d prepare myself for the glitter filled celebrations by digging in a bit to what Gay Pride means to me. And, for me, the weekend meant block parties, parades, festivals, friends, family and an all around celebration. But it also meant a lot more to me. Something that I’m proud to tell you about

Progress Report

The fight for gay rights continues to progress before our eyes as many individuals emerge at the forefront by disclosing their sexuality to the public. Their courage is inspiring, especially when taking into account that there was a time, especially in Hollywood, when being gay was a huge taboo.

Shut Up and Dance Review

On Saturday, March 22, the Forrest Theater hosted the 22nd anniversary of Shut Up and Dance. Each year, the dancers of the Pennsylvania Ballet create this one of a kind, one night only performance and donate all of the proceeds to the Philadelphia based charity, MANNA.

Keep Looking

This weekend, HBO’s new series Looking concluded its first season. It has been touted as utterly authentic and refreshing with the best mustache on television since Tom Selleck. But does it show gay men in the best light?

Interview with Amazing Race Contestant Luke Adams

I’m a huge fan of CBS’ reality show The Amazing Race, where teams of two race around the world for a million-dollar prize. Several months ago, a friend introduced me to a new Philly resident, whom I recognized immediately: Luke Adams, a deaf and openly-gay man who twice ran the race with his mother, Margie. The next season of The Amazing Race will feature some of the most competitive teams from previous seasons, including Luke and Margie.

SPOONING on Valentine’s Day! Popcorn with Kale Chips

This year, despite a boyfriend-less Valentine’s Day, I’m actually looking forward to February 14th. Three words: House of Cards. Netflix’s brilliant marketing strategy has ensured that couples and single folk alike will be binge watching Robin Wright-fierceness in the comfort of their homes. In that spirit, here are two homemade popcorn recipes to complete your TV (laptop?) watching experience.

Represent

Some believe that our voices are loud and finally being recognized because of our visibility in the arts, television and politics. Some believe that there’s too much dissention when pitted against the rampant body image issues and the ongoing masculine versus feminine debate that draws lines in the sand towards unification.

HEELS ON WHEELS: Krystal

Krystal mainly uses her bike for running errands, with an average of 20 miles per month – not too shabby! That’s at least 600 calories burned per month! Thank goodness Krystal wears a helmet, especially since she rides in the rain and was almost doored a couple times!

Boxed Wine, Family Feuds, and Grandma’s Questions–Three Things You Can Do To Avoid a Gay Family Meltdown This Thanksgiving

Many gay people find themselves dreading extended family interactions for one reason or another. Maybe your coming out wasn’t terribly celebrated by your great Cousin Peter, twice removed, or you really don’t want to discuss how being gay isn’t a choice with your Grandma Patsy and that you really won’t find a girl one day which will magically convert you…the list goes on.

Three Nights in San Francisco

Being ‘Gay’ is simply choosing to live a different ‘Life Philosophy’ than some and San Francisco is one of the best places on Earth to express that Philosophy. One can feel it here in Philly in the Gayborhood for certain. In San Francisco, you feel it everywhere in and around the city.

A Review of UNDRESSING ISRAEL: GAY MEN IN THE PROMISED LAND

When I reviewed UNDRESSING ISRAEL: GAY MEN IN THE PROMISED LAND, I was expecting another documentary about “coming out” and all that goes with it in the year 2013. I was totally delighted to find myself watching a happy report on joyful, comfortable and handsome Israeli men talking about their successful lives in Tel Aviv, living life in the open, serving in the military (compulsory) honestly, loving, marrying, having children and simply being who they are.

THE COMING OUT PROJECT: Myrna Rodriguez

PhillyGayCalendar celebrates the coming-out stories of Philadelphia-area LGBTQ citizens leading up the city’s OutFest celebration in October. Myrna Rodriguez, a PhillyGayCalendar blogger, received an MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College. She is an instructor at Rowan University and Gloucester County College. She has been published in Philadelphia Stories Magazine.

THE COMING OUT PROJECT: Pete Haas

PhillyGayCalendar celebrates the coming-out stories of Philadelphia-area LGBTQ citizens leading up to the city’s OutFest celebration in October. Pete Haas is a Philadelphia area native having lived in Delaware County for most of his life. Highlights of said life include a ten year stint in the Boston area, fifteen years in a veal pen…uh, software company cubicle, plans to finally move into the city, and lots and lots of singing and theater.

THE COMING OUT PROJECT: Dave Bautista

PhillyGayCalendar celebrates the coming-out stories of Philadelphia-area LGBTQ citizens leading up to the city’s OutFest celebration in October. Dave Bautista, 32, was born in the Philippines, raised in Jacksonville, North Carolina and moved to Philadelphia in May 2009. He is a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and a consultant for a private rehab facility as a Detox Counselor.

The Fate of Giovanni’s Room

Many reacted strongly to the news that the owners of Giovanni’s Room would be selling both the business and its physical storefront. Although there is the possibility that a new owner could purchase the business and continue operating the establishment as a gay bookstore, the chances are unlikely.

Dance, Dance, Otherwise We Are Lost: A Review of Tangle Movement Arts’ Break/Drift/Resist

Pina Bausch, the well-known choreographer and subject of the recent documentary film Pina, once said of her dancers, I’m not so interested in how they move as in what moves them. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Bausch’s style as I watched the open rehearsal for Tangle Movement Arts’ production of Break/Drift/Resist, which plays as part of the 2013 Philly Fringe Arts festival.

Tying the Knot

In thirty two days, I’m getting gay married to my favorite person in the world. I get to stand up in front of our friends and family and make this big public commitment to the person I love most in the world. Psyched is an understatement.

An Open Letter to Mister Cee: A Response from ‘The Ignant Intellectual’

I won’t belabor you with in depth recaps about your recent media involvement or even about this most recent incident when you were reportedly arrested in an attempt to solicit a male prostitute – as you, unlike the rest of us, were present for it all. I would like to focus less on your actions and more on the things that it seems you are not doing – or perhaps unable to fathom.

Zines

Last Saturday I was on a panel with a bunch of grown-up smarties about archiving, affect, and activism at Giovanni’s Room. I spoke for a little while about zines and my involvement in the Philadelphia zine community. The event went well, and I learned a lot from the other presenters.

Beyond the Lenses with Peter Lien

Beyond the critical acclaim he has received for images that transform who we are inwardly, lies an artist whose sensational appetite for discussion around the tabooed and outer box focus has lent not just this country but the world over beauty and meaning and new truth, through breathtaking vantages on our dailies that give pause to new realms of possibility in what we believe we know is so.

Getting Their Hearts On

When I heard the word activist, I used to think more along the lines of those real life superheroes such as Martin Luther King Jr. or Harvey Milk. Examining the word further, I began to realize that each one of us, at one time or another in our lives, can define ourselves as activists.

Review of Eat A Pita

The Gayborhood is quickly becoming a foodie’s dream come true. Marcie & Val’s empire, Fuel, El Vez, Philly Cupcake, Vintage, Zavino are some of the super successful Gayborhood staples. It’s time for Eat A Pita’s time in the spotlight!

Creating FAMILY: A Q&A with Filmmaker Patrick Wang

Often when a debut filmmaker takes on too many roles in a production, it takes its toll on the final product. Not so with Patrick Wang, the force behind the acclaimed indie In the Family. For his work as the writer, director, producer, lead actor, and distributor of the sensitive drama – his first feature – Wang has received awards at several film festivals and the film was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.

Reality Stars Invade Parx Casino

Every once in a while I get the chance to meet up with some really amazing people.  Recently I had a huge opportunity to meet up with three of the biggest stars to grace the reality television world, Drita D’Avanzo from VH1’s Mob Wives, Real Housewife of New York Ramona Singer, and of course Tracy Dimarco from the Style Network’s Jerseylicious

Review: Federal Donuts

Everybody loves a diamond in the rough. In this situation, the rough is the Pennsport area of Philadelphia, and the diamond is Federal Donuts. Federal Donuts is the underdog company that sells their gourmet donuts, fried chicken, and coffee. Sounds amazing, right?

This Year’s RENT

Collaborative Stage Productions bring Alphabet City to Hammonton, NJ, for a staging of Jonathan Larson’s posthumous hit rock opera. More than a decade after Mark and Roger were “living in America at the end of the millenium,” does RENT still pay off?

Lonely Holidays

The holiday season is a time of friends, laughter, gifts – and loneliness. Oh the joy of not being able to be with one’s self! Whether we are coupled or single, loneliness sooner or later will make an appearance in our lives. The holiday season seems to exaggerate feeling lonely, especially when we assume everyone else is having a jolly time.

Fitting In

We all need to fit in and belong. When you start a new job, you want to fit in. When you join a new group, you want to belong. When you arrive at a dinner party, you want to feel welcomed. This is normal. We all need to feel part of our communities. But why do we often feel like outsiders?

How risky is kissing?

I’m a 17 year old slowly falling for someone who has just told me that they are HIV+. Both the decision to stop the relationship from happening and to keep going seem to be wrong. (Either I put myself at risk, or potentially wreck his emotional state.) I don’t even know who to listen to about the risks though. Some say if I kiss him, I’ll get HIV and some say I won’t unless I have open cuts in my mouth. Just how risky is all of this?

Civil Disagreement

Jesus hung out with sinners whose behavior he clearly did not approve of. But he reserved his strongest disapproval for those other sinners who would condemn them. He did not say, ‘Hate the sin but love the sinner,’ but he did say this: ‘Let him who is without sin cast the first stone’.

Silk City – Not So Smooth

The Hip Couple that live in my building invited me to a very civilized Sunday afternoon of brunch followed by perusing an “Open Studio” of resident artists’ galleries. I was super excited! I love brunch and art! Especially when it’s all located on gritty Spring Garden Street in sunny Philadelphia.

What does Barry like for dinner? Reservations!

You know how you walk by a joint on the regular and never try it. You see the joint, but just never get around to going in. Perhaps it’s on some out-of-the-way street that’s on your way to someplace that has nothing to do with food. Well, I’ve been walking by Meme at 22nd and Spruce for a solid two years now and haven’t thought of going there for dinner.

Colman Domingo, A Broadway Star, Comes Back Home

Colman Domingo could have been like one of the characters he played in ”Passing Strange,” Mr. Franklin – a gentleman who keeps part of himself in shadow in order to spare himself pain and conform to the world’s expectations. Instead, spurred on by a love-filled upbringing in West Philadelphia, he has chosen to live fully as himself, exploring – and expressing – all the multifaceted reality of his own identity, not to mention those who shaped him and the people he encounters in the world. He tackles all of those all by himself in his solo play ”A Boy and His Soul.” Now Domingo, who has won critical acclaim for his ability to portray a wide variety of fully-fleshed-out characters, is bringing his autobiographical play to the city that shaped him.

Wait, You’re Running for President? 9 Candidates You’ve Never Heard From

Who says the Republican Party is full of right wing nut jobs hell bent on destroying the middle class by crucifying the tax code and obliterating the progressive civil rights movements of minorities by entitling the rich and special interests groups while raping the poor of basic human services in order to send our country back into the dark ages of a bleached white, suburban, empty shell of a country where Stepford wives are the norm and fake smiles only mask the hatred of white bread conformity forced upon them by pseudo-Christian Sharia law?

Chicken Legs? Me? … EAT ME!

How many guys have you seen working out at the gym and showing off those huge biceps and big chest, but wearing long sweat pants in every season of the year, including the hot summer? They look hot until they strip down at the locker room to change and then …Surprise! You knew it! They suffer from a popular condition, CLS (chicken legs syndrome), I call it the lollipop syndrome, because as yummy as they look, after a few licks the only thing left is the stick, but that’s another steamy story…

Gay Plays Galore!

Stuck in end of summer doldrums? Fear not! There are no fewer than 15 gay plays and shows coming up at the end of August and the beginning of September. There’s a little something here for everyone. Check the end of this article for a quick summary of shows and dates.

Bring the Love: the partnering of C.B.L.S.L. and The Trevor Project for the ASANA 2011 Softball World Series in Philadelphia

The partnership of City of Brotherly Love Softball League and The Trevor Project at first seemed like an unlikely pairing. The C.B.L.S.L. won the bid to host this year’s softball world series in Philadelphia, and The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.

Remembering the Closet

For those of us that have come out of the closet and move away from hiding our sexual identity to those that are around us, the memory of what it means to be in the closet becomes more distant with time as we become more comfortable with our sexuality. However, in doing so and moving past the closet, do we also in turn distance ourselves away from those that are still in the closet?

Do Ask, Please Tell

When top brass says “jump” you ask “how high?” When top brass says “shoot” you shoot. When top brass says, “protect your brothers” they never said “just the heteros”, they meant everyone! And no one had a problem, nor should there have ever been a question about your sexuality in the military.

BOYFRIEND UNIVERSITY: Touch Me!

I remember going to the barber for a haircut with my father when I was a boy. I grew up in Rising Sun, Ohio, a small town with a general store, a lonely post office, and only one barber. I must have been about 9 or 10 years old. I don’t remember much about the barber himself or the shop except for the traditional, red and blue swirled barber’s pole and the smell of overly-applied aftershave. The most significant part about getting a hair cut was being touched by a man.

Fantastic Ideas

What do you get when five non-profit organizations, a handful of volunteers, and two trail blazing super heroes come together in the basement of an inner city church? “A mash up,” called Q-Spot. “It’s like community center meets nightclub, minus the alcohol and plus extra fun.”

Hard Times in Central PA

As per being a Political Science major, I am often challenged to view the world from a completely different point of view separate from my own preferences in order to fully understand political questions. That said, I am well aware that not everyone is either learned nor interested in anything politically related and would rather stay away from all talk or reference to such topic so as to keep face, but that certainly doesn’t mean that when push comes to shove they don’t have an opinion after overcoming the utter embarrassment they have of not exactly knowing what’s going on in the world, which is ok in normal everyday life, but doesn’t grant you the right to make false accusations as if you do know the in and out intricacies of US affairs.

The Love Boat

When was the last time you did something new that you talked about for weeks to come? Are you tired of the same old faces and scene? Do you want to take advantage of gorgeous summer weather dancing your ass off to the best music from the last three decades all the while enjoying the views of the waterfront? Let’s go. I mean it. That’s an order. Oh, and save a dance for me.

The Post-Rapture Guide for the End Times Ahead

If you’re reading this, I have some news for you. You haven’t been Raptured. I know. I’m as surprised as you are. I was all set to ditch my pudgy corporeal form and get whisked up to heaven in an incorruptible, and presumably toned, body, to spend the rest of eternity chugging mimosas and learning to play rock songs on the harp. Alas, we were not the chosen ones, and now we’re stuck here to face the storms, earthquakes, hurricanes, and whatever other geologic activity and weather patterns that once represented natural phenomena but are now gleaming signposts of the approaching apocalypse.

Pool Side in Philadelphia

I’m not a huge beach guy. I mean, it’s really pretty to look at. But even when I go with the most seasoned beach lovers, I still get impatient, sweaty, coated in sand and just generally irritable. A walk down to the ocean really just involves jellyfish, seaweed and shells ripping up my feet. Sorry. I can deal, I just don’t love it.

Bottoms Up

The summer is coming very soon, and we all want to be in the best shape possible to flaunt our sexy bodies at beach. We can’t deny that we find attractive a nice, round, juicy butt, and regardless of your sexual position, you can have a BIG BOTTOM too.

Fantasies During Sex

One of your recent polls asked: ‘Which causes you the most anxiety around sex?’ and I was surprised by my own answer: ‘the psychology.’ I have always really enjoyed sex, and sex with my current boyfriend has been the best I’ve had to this point. However, we’ve been together for about a year and a half and I it is gradually getting harder to focus on the act and keep my mind from wandering. I start thinking about what I’m thinking about… I’ll be approaching orgasm thinking ‘Is it sick for me to picture having sex with someone else right now? What does that mean about our relationship?’ What do you recommend for the overly analytic fornicator?”

Charting Sex

Several of you beloved readers/listeners have tipped me to the latest findings from OkCupid: a series of awesome charts that demonstrate a variety of fascinating correlations between lifestyle, age, appearance and sexuality that uses the millions and millions of OKCupid’s dating site members as subjects.

Overcoming Bullying

As a member of a family consisting of siblings that cover the range of autism from Aspbergers to Manic-Depression to Downs syndrome, I have witnessed the cruel and hateful things that can and are said to belittle a person simply because they are different and have spent too many nights worrying about my own siblings’ personal safety at school.

That’s Gay: Drag Edition

Spring is the best weather for being gay, in and out of drag. Not only because you can read people for trying to wear the same Old Navy summer clothes they tried to adorn themselves with last year (and always too early-gays start wearing flip flops the second the winter ice melts), but also because it’s pageant season!

A Prayer for the Children

If you are of a certain age – somewhere around mine, say – you probably wrestled with your sexual orientation as you came of age, much as I did. Many of those in my generation worried whether our parents would accept us if we told them we were gay or lesbian. Many of us felt profoundly alone in being attracted to members of our own sex, and most of us feared that our classmates in school would pick on or ridicule us if we revealed our secret.

BOYFRIEND UNIVERSITY: The Jesus-Boyfriend Disorder

There is a common, immature fantasy about relationships that reduces love down to dependency and assumes our insatiable neediness. Many of us love this fantasy and in fact are quite addicted to it. I like to call it the Knight-in-shining-armor syndrome or the Jesus-boyfriend disorder. We pretend there is one, unique, and perfectly looking person destined by divine graces who will finally love us rightly, so then we can feel whole and complete forever. (Insert sounds of angelic choir here.) Think of it as Jesus meets Cinderella. By definition, it’s about relationship as savior and assumes we all need saving.

Philly’s Ticket to NYC’s Underground Queer Arts Scene

This Wed, April 6th at 8pm, Pussy Faggot! comes to the Trocadero for an inaugural visit to the City of Brotherly and Sisterly Love. The brain child of former Philadelphian, Earl Dax, Pussy Faggot! promises a tantalizing array of drag, performance and visual arts, DJs and provocateurs thrown together in a cacophonous symphony of revelatory experience. If you are looking for an event sure to send you flying over the hump or simply warm you up for a promising spring weekend, this is the event for you.

A Community-Minded Candidate for Judge

In case you haven’t noticed from signs sprouting in windows, there’s a primary election just around the corner. In addition to deciding whether Mayor Michael Nutter deserves a chance at a second term in office, we will be voting for candidates for City Council, row offices and judgeships. I had the chance recently to meet one of those judicial candidates, and I think you should get to know him better too.

‘Dancing With Myself’: How Solo Sex in Philly Just Got Hotter.

Soon-to-be-sex savvy Philadelphians gathered at the Danger Danger gallery on March 11th for ‘Dancing With Myself: A Celebration of Solo Sex.’ The event was masterminded in every sense of the word by Screw Smart, the self-described queer, sex-positive sedutainment group that has been spicing up stages and demonstration rooms since its inception in 2009. (That’s sex-education-entertainment for those of you looking to rock the scrabble board later tonight.)

Comedy and the Fag Word

The other night at a comedy show, two of my peers used anti-gay epithets from the stage. And it wasn’t in the context of some brilliant bit of satire. It was just, "What a faggot" and "that guy’s being a fag." I sat through three utterances and then I got up and walked out. Before too long, I had to come right back, though, because I was set to host another comedy show at the same venue afterward. It was awkward. One of the comics who used the epithets offered an apology, but I didn’t let him off easy, because he said things like "You didn’t have to walk out" and "I’m sorry you were offended."

V-Day Breakups

It was just Valentine’s Day, which is supposed to be the most romantical of days, right? Then why did my brother just get dumped by his live-in girlfriend and why have two of my coworkers just broken up with their boyfriends in the last week? What gives, yo?

Person of the Year 2010: Gloria Casarez

Community activists have a history of mainstreaming the marginalized, sheltering the dispossessed, and empowering the powerless. Gloria Casarez has followed this path all the way to City Hall, where, as Mayor Michael Nutter’s director of LGBT affairs, she has one foot in the corridors of authority and one still in the activist tradition.

Trouble in Mind: Thoughts on ‘A New Brain’

Gordon Schwinn, the lead character in William Finn’s ‘A New Brain’, is fighting to stay alive from the moment he first sets foot on stage. The musical, which is being given an invigorating, insightful local production by Plays & Players, follows Gordon as he faces hospitalization and surgery for a seemingly terminal brain defect, all while struggling to continue his craft of songwriting and balance his fraying relationships. Just another fun-filled evening of singing and dancing, right?

New Year’s Resolutions About Love

So, it’s 2011. Janurary is off to a roaring start and the city is full of crisp air and new beginnings. It’s hard for me not to get overwhelmed, walking around with wide-eyes and thin skin all the time. I love this city. The rush and noise of it Market Street, and the quiet of the Free Library. I love the smells of Reading Terminal Market and finding small pieces of the city to make mine. There are things about the city that are new and scary to me, but I love those things for how deeply they make me feel, for new experiences, for taking me outside of my comfort zone and giving me perspective.

“Let’s Put On A Show (About A Show! (About A Show!)!

Though snow blankets a massive swath of the nation, this month of January is possibly harshest on the Great White Way, as productions shutter for good rather than face the cold post-holiday season of decreased attendance and diminishing returns. This year was particularly unkind, cutting down shows both star-studded and barebones. Indeed, the only sure-things right now are the warhorse family musicals and, improbably, Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark, which, at a cost of $65 million and counting is Broadway’s most expensive show ever. Budgets and special effects are considerably more modest a few miles southward where Philadelphia’s Mauckingbird Theatre Company’s production of [title of show], a musical with 4 actors, one instrument, and no airborn superheroes, opened on Wednesday.

Non-Monogamy

For a long time I felt this way. Thankfully my fiancee is the shit and we both kind of admitted being scared of only being with one person for the next 50 years, so we made some “changes”. It has honestly made our relationship stronger and more loving to “date as a couple” (in her words). Anywho….thought you might want to give

Life with Dick: House Werk

That’s right: I’m a homemaker. With Dick off working all the hours God sent, leaving early in the morning for real estate or construction duties, coming back in the afternoon for a costume change, and then leaving again to wait tables until nighttime, it’s up to me to keep the house running as smoothly as possible. Unfortunately, I am pretty ill-equipped for the job

Tweed Review

If you’ve walked on 12th Street in the gayborhood in the past few months, you probably noticed a new restaurant has recently opened its doors! Tweed Restaurant opened late last year at 114 S 12th Street, the third restaurant in this location in at least that many years. After a list of failed restaurants in the same location, it bears asking, “Is this location cursed?”

A Single Man

The number one New Year’s resolution this year among my pals seems to be to find love. To settle down, stop fucking around and to find “The One” and I not against any of that except that I find that most gay men act like drowning victims when it comes to approaching relationship. Clinging for dear life onto the first sign of an available man like white on rice as if their ovaries have gone bad and they would never be able to have sex past the age of 40.

A Review of ‘Girl Crush’

There’s a perception that men are drawn to simple graphic, visual sexual images and women are drawn to stories with elaborate settings and complex dynamics between the characters. Whoever put this collection of short erotic stories together totally agrees with that… but they also like a good finger fuck.

An Interview with Q Lounge & Kitchen’s John Caputo

John Caputo is Q Lounge & Kitchen’s jack of all trades. As general manager and managing partner, the 32-year-old does it all — from booking DJs to planning events. His goal: to get the community out at Q Lounge every night, not just Friday and Saturday. It’s a 7-day-a-week job…and it doesn’t always leave much time for dating. But a former Philadelphia Mr. Gay with years of industry experience under his belt just might be the hometown hero we’re looking for.

Grind Up on Me

Grindr is addictive. It has become a worse distraction for me than Facebook. It is as if I don’t already have a thousand other more useful things that command my attention. But every time my eyes flicker to my iPhone, I can’t help but press that yellow square bubble with a black mask in the center.

BOYFRIEND UNIVERSITY: When Will You Love Again?

I am in awe of how we return to loving and opening to new relationships after all the endured hurts, missed opportunities, and past failures. If you’re too young to know yet or have been lucky enough to be spared – warning, warning – heartbreak is on the horizon. Sorry to be the messenger, but everything ends. And if you’re a bit older, having already experienced the loss of a lover or two or many, you too can point to scars that conclude with reasons.

Kicked Out Anthology – Stories of Queer Homeless Youth

So, a couple of years ago, I had the awesome pleasure of attending Philly Zine Fest. One of the most interesting people I met was my table-mate. This cool, queer, femme comic book artist with a cursive (!) typewriter. On and off, I kept up with Sassafrass Lowry’s various projects through blogs and the zine community, but recently was hugely impressed with the scale and scope of a book she compiled about queer homelessness. I think it’s such an important issue, relevant and often overlooked. Sassafrass was kind enough to answer some of my questions.

No More Mr. Gay

Last Saturday night, Mr. Gay USA opened to a trilogy of Gaga songs with sexy dancers, an amazing drag performance and a complimenting brass section behind her. Stunning performance aside, is there a need for a Mr. Gay USA? How is this night going to be different from any other big party that comes to Voyeur?

Review of ‘Carrie’

Carrie, now showing at Underground Arts at the Wolf Building, tells the familiar story of a ridiculed teen with telekinetic powers. The Brian De Palma film and Stephen King novel by the same name depicts the protagonist in a dramatic light, portraying a tale of hurt and revenge. Erik Jackson’s stage adaptation accomplishes the same task, but with a lot more humor.

BOYFRIEND UNIVERSITY: Integrating Fuck & Love

Once while on a first date, I was asked, ”What do you want when having sex?” I made a couple of jokes about sex, trying to avoid having to be vulnerable. Then he launched into an overly confident speech about his accomplished sexual prowess, while mentioning his penis size more than once. I thought, who are you kidding Stud? You’re just as sexually uncertain as anybody.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

The recent bullying and suicides of Tyler Clementi, Asher Brown, Seth Walsh, and Billy Lucas four gay teenagers whose lives were cut short is just senseless. It is disheartening to learn that in this day and age, our youth are still plagued by homophobia that is rooted in ignorance.

Why I Walk

In two weeks I will be walking around Fairmount Park to support and remember those who are infected or affected by the HIV virus. I have certainly been affected by the epidemic. I took my first HIV test when I was seventeen. I remember feeling so nervous and thought that my life would be over if the test came back positive. But nonetheless, I couldn’t quite wrap my head around living with HIV.

The John J. Wilcox, Jr. Lending Library

Like Carrie Bradshaw and Monolos, books are what makes me happiest. I love books. The texture, the smell, the sound of pages turning. I love the static quiet and still air in bookstores and libraries, even comic book shops. I love the way standing in a room of books makes me feel like nothing is out of my reach. That I could learn anything, with enough time and effort, become a self-educated expert on any subject. As a card-carrying member of the gay lady club, of course GLBTQ fiction and history hold a special place in my heart.

Conversation with James Ijames

Actor/writer James Ijames has a busy year. The out Philadelphia transplant and Temple University grad appeared in a number of regional theater productions, including a celebrated staging of Tony Kushner’s epic Angels in America, in which Ijames played Belize. Later in the year Maukingbird Theater Company premiered The Threshing Floor, his one-man show about out writer James Baldwin. In August, he was announced as one of 5 finalists for the F. Otto Haas Award for Emerging Theater Artist. The recipient will be announced on October 4 at the Barrymore Awards. He was gracious enough to talk with me about his year, his play and what being gay and a person of color means to his art.

Tasteless Lube

Dear Timaree, I have a problem that I think other men might have as well. I like hand jobs and blow jobs, sometimes in the same session. Is there a really good, slick lubricant I can put on myself that doesn’t taste like diesel fuel to my partner? Keep up the fabulous work.

BOYFRIEND UNIVERSITY: Distancer Pursuer Style of Relating

How many of us took Boyfriend 101 in school? I bet the number is low. (Drunken, late nights experimenting with other boys don’t count). We plan for our education and prepare for our careers, yet when it comes to relationships some of us give more conscious thought to buying a new pair of jeans. I often meet men who say they want a relationship and yet have few skills and limited awareness about how to create it. It seems many of us gay men know little about emotional exchange, vulnerable disclosure, or power struggles. If we want good relationships, then we have to ask ourselves, what is healthy relating and how do we nurture it in our lives?

Where to meet lesbians?

I’m in the process of coming out as lesbian and need some help. I’m in my early thirties and have never even approached being involved in the gay scene. I started to realize my orientation a few years ago, but was very traditional-minded and never thought I would be able to live any other way. But it’s important to me that I not waste any more time and begin living the life I want.  I found stuff online about how to come out to your friends and family and while the conversations have not always been easy, I feel good about being able to be honest.  What remains for me is finding lesbian and gay friends and learning how to approach women. I don’t know any gay people my age in my social network, other than a couple acquaintances. How do I go to a lesbian bar and meet people?

Grammy Mame, Stylez Milez, and I had the chance to try Barbuzzo during restaurant week.

The power lesbians of 13th Street (Valerie and Marcie) who also own Lolita, Grocery, Bindi, Open House, Verde, and Marcie Blaine Chocolates debuted their latest home run – BARBUZZO! Honestly, these women have the Midas touch! One might be tempted to call them overachievers. Personally, I think they passed that when they opened their 4th business on 13th Street! I think after a 7th business we need to admit, they’re on a quest to rule the world, or at the very least the gayborhood!

Hipster Hunting: Surprising Local Spots to Meet that Boy You’ve Been Stalking on OKCupid

I met most of my best friends on OKCupid.com. True, it’s ostensibly a dating website, but there’s such a thin line between friends and more than friends, it seems as good a place as any. It’s full of guys I like and who are like me, plus as an added benefit it’s one of those reputable dating sites where you won’t see someone’s junk before learning their name.

Social Bottoming

Isn’t it funny how everyone raves about masculine bottoms but no one talks about the sissy top? I recently heard the term ‘Social Bottom.’ The term really struck a chord with me and I have been pondering on it till now because, OMG, I am a social bottom.

Live Arts Festival review: Brian Sanders’ JUNK presents “Sanctuary”

When you enter the cavernous warehouse performance space currently housing “Sanctuary” the extremely sexy new piece by out choreographer Brian Sanders’ JUNK, the ushers dutifully warn “If you sit in the first two rows you’ll get wet. Very wet.” This writer is too much of a gentleman and the piece is far too good to stoop to doubling that entendre. Resisting, however, will be hard. Er, difficult.

An Open Letter to Blaze Waters

I understand that your shows and parties are also fundraisers to help you in your running battle with the owner of Albert’s on Grant Avenue in the Northeast, where you had been operating the first successful gay nightspot in the Northeast until Albert Buoncristiano locked you out in a rent dispute. I sympathize with your plight and understand the frustration and anger you feel at how he has treated you. I would, however, like to offer a suggestion at this point…

DJ Billy Carroll Spins for Boys of Summer 2010

For 35 years, Billy Carroll has been doing just that. Moving crowds and telling stories with musical combinations, manipulating energy levels to provide unforgettable nights. He is a DJ that specializes in versatility, and, like a true renaissance man, he refuses to pigeonhole himself. Billy has traveled the world from Philly to LA to China, and his formative years afforded him the unique opportunity to moonlight as a guest DJ at perhaps the birthplace of the true music scene, the legendary Paradise Garage.

Is a Threesome Right for Me?

A 6+ year relationship ended early last year, and recently i’ve moved toward becoming “official” with one person after spending a year on my own, exploring, etc….She’s very sweet and we get along great and we have a mutual friend whom i have always been very friendly/flirtatious, but nothing has ever happened. Lately they go out on weekends and talk about me…. I’m just wondering if this is dangerous territory for me, despite the potential awesomeness that could (and most definitely would) ensue. If this turns threesome-y, I want to know potential dangers, etc…I don’t need to do ANYTHING to make it happen, I’m asking you basically if you were me what would you do?

DJ Eddie Elias hits Philadelphia

As a DJ, I very rarely go out to listen to other DJs. Some might call me jaded. They’re probably right. But, no matter what social anxieties dog me, I always make it an effort to hear Eddie Elias. Simultaneously dark and uplifting, DJ Eddie Elias is a unique force in New York’s dance music scene. He’s been gracing Philadelphia with his unique flavor for just about a year at Voyeur, the city’s most upfront nightlife experience, with largest dancefloor and best sound in the city, hands down.

So When Can I Jump Him?

Is there an update to the rule of how many dates you should go on before having sex with someone? I don’t just ask to be funny- it’s really easy to mess up and hook up too quickly or to waste a ton of time. Is there a magic number that will keep you safely between a short-term hookup and the friend zone?

Girl Movies

There is systemic problem of minimizing females in movies in favor of a male-centric and male-oriented model of filmmaking. And it’s not just in the slasher flicks, shoot ’em ups and the dumb frat comedies. It’s even kids movies.

QFest Films for Guys

With over 120 feature films, short films, parties, panels, programs and other miscellaneous events to choose from over the next two weeks, planning your Philadelphia QFest itinerary can sometimes be a daunting task. In an effort to help your ticket-buying decisions, I have listed five particularly exciting screenings below, featuring some of the year’s most acclaimed gay-themed films. These five are NOT TO BE MISSED!

QFest Films for the Ladies

Kelly Burkhardt is the Managing Director of TLA Video, Programmer for QFest 2010 as well as a local film maker of such films as Tremble and Spark. She has been working with Qfest since 2003 and has a true love of film. How better to give PhillyGayCalendar a rundown of the best films for the ladies for the 2010 QFest Film Festival

I Love the Eiffel Tower

I saw this documentary about people who think they’re in love with objects. This one woman even married the Eiffel Tower. Are these people serious? Do they just want attention? And what do you say to those who say that allowing gay marriage will let people like this marry their furniture or cars? Isn’t this proof they’re right?

Pride Weekend Picks

It’s a big weekend for pride, and our collective pot is filled to brimming with festivities to choose from. For your Arts & Entertainment pleasure, Alejandro humbly submits these two must-see events that feature the work of local members of the LGBT community and also raise funds for charitable causes.

Breaking a Friends Engagement

My friend just got engaged to someone I think he should break up with. All the times I’ve hung out with them, this guy’s given me the creeps. I think he’s weird and not very nice and a total step backwards for him.  I never said anything about it to him when they were just dating. But now that it’s so serious, I feel like I HAVE to do something. How do I bring this up to him? If this goes badly and they have to divorce, I would feel terrible to have just stood by and let it happen.

Kids and the Internet

Interested in your take on this article: Teenage kicks: Is internet porn creating a damaged generation? With just a few clicks of a mouse, modern teenagers have easy access to hardcore and often violent pornography. But are we raising a damaged generation as a consequence?

Dating in Secret

I’m a lesbian who having an affair with a married woman. She says she loves her husband as a friend but she’s never been really attracted to him. We’ve only been involved a short amount of time and she’s only ever been known as a heterosexual, so she’s not ready to throw everything away for me yet. And that’s fine with me too: I don’t need a serious relationship now either. But I do want to keep seeing her and I want to keep it quiet. I know you don’t approve of deceit, but you have to have some knowledge about dating in secret. What do I do and not do to keep this under wraps until we have a solid plan about what we want?

Pop! Sketch Comedy for the Gifted

Lady Gaga and Cyndia Lauper do a makeover on a shocked fan. A harried receptionist at the American Sperm Professionals of America accidently drinks some of her company’s product. And then there’s the latest installment of the outrageously popular Gaga Vlog hosted by Lady Bling Bling and her associate, Focus.

RuPaul’s Drag Race

May the best woman win! With five drag queens left in the competition, the time is ripe to add some RuPaul’s Drag Race recaps to your calendar. And this week, there was no lack of ripe fruit on the runway, as Ru introduced her squirrelfriends to the ‘mos of Stonewall Riots past.

Here & Now

Friendship as much as love of music is the glue that binds the singers in PGMC to one another and to the organization. It’s quite fitting, then, that next month, we will present a concert that focuses on how that glue works – and what happens when someone comes unstuck.

My Girl is TOO Hot!

I have a dilemma that seems silly even to me. I’ve been dating the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. No, she really, really is. Her personality is also really great. She’s sweet and smart and thoughtful. I’m totally smitten. I don’t know how I landed her, but we’ve been seeing each other for about 2 months since we met through friends at a party. But as much as people envy my luck at having such arm candy, it’s kind of hell. Everyone in the world is competition now. She gets hit on constantly, by both women and men, even right in front of me. She’s good about it and politely shoos them away. But these people eyeball me like, “who’s THIS piece of crap?” It’s incredibly stressful and I feel as though at any second I might end up in a fight with one of them or dropped for someone more attractive. And I don’t want to seem too clingy or jealous to her, especially not this early. What am I supposed to do?

Jeff, Age 29 – There’s more to me that just herpes

About 3 years ago, I noticed this red bump on the head of my dick. It didn’t hurt or itch. It actually looked like a little pimple. I went to the doctor eventually. It came back that I had “HSV2” … they told me it was the genital herpes virus. I was kind of freaked out, but mostly I was confused. I didn’t know what that really meant or what was going to happen to me.

The Superbowl Commercials…as Timaree Sees It.

I get that the event is, in essence, our nation’s annual holiday of Straight Man Fest, even though absolutely everyone watches it. We all eat wings, let out particularly stinky farts and yell at our flat screens. I dig it. But this year’s ads had an unmistakable pattern of trying to empower straight men (through shopping) that struck me as surprising. I had no idea the boys around me were feeling so castrated.

The Adams

I remember my first time hearing about Adam4Adam. I was a sophomore in college and as naïve as Rose Nylund. I didn’t know a single thing about the internet fucking “dating” culture and if I did I would’ve exited stage left – way left.

Why Aren’t We Getting It On?

“My girlfriend and I have been dating for over a year and a half. We live together and have a great relationship. The problem is our sex life, which was great early on but has fizzled in the last 10 months. The main problem is her really low sex drive and it has become a major issue in our relationship. We never have sex more than once a week but the dry-spells have been lasting over a month more recently. I didn’t get fat, I didn’t get any worse looking, I didn’t stop treating her well, and I think our relationship in general has gotten a lot stronger over the last 10 months. I know her stress level is high but the low libido has been difficult for me to adapt to. I struggle to talk about this with her because although we DO discuss the lack of intimacy, everytime I bring up the subject, I feel like I put too much pressure on and make the situation even worse. I’ve found myself getting irritable and more on-edge with her because I want to have sex more often so I would do anything to help the situation improve. She’s only 26, Timaree… what the hell should I do?”

Stop Squeezing the Mellons

“I know you’re not like the Ambassador to Gay or anything, but maybe you have some insights: why do gay boys think they can grab women and sexually harass them and it’s ok because they’re gay? I have a few different gay guy friends who do this. We go out and they grab my boob in the midst of conversation, trying to be funny. Or they spank my ass as I walk by. It would be outrageous if a straight guy did it, but since they’re gay I’m supposed to be ok? What is up with that?”

Cry Me a River

“I’ve had something weird happen a couple times recently. After my fiance and I have had sex, I started crying uncontrollably. It makes no sense! It was great sex! There was no pain. And I’ve never been raped or abused. It freaked me out and so my fiance was really worried. What is going on?”

Stuff I Think You’ll Like

Seems I can’t turn around without hearing news about a new hot party, event, club, exhibit, or activity. It seems that our local impresarios, promoters, and culturati must have heard all that grumbling about how tired the scene in Philadelphia had gotten and all at once decided that it was time to Do Something About It.

Dodgeball: A Tale of Revenge

Awkward kids huddled together in gym class, their destiny determined by the order in which they’re drafted to a team. Non-athletic, flimsy boys die a little deep down inside every time a girl is picked before them. Where stereotypes and cliques are the ruling order, every terror of adolescence is played out in a game of grade school dodgeball.

REAL Community: Dr. Rob Winn, Medical Director, Mazzoni Center

Since June 2007, the Get REAL Project has been telling the stories of young gay, bisexual and transgender men in Philly. While continuing that mission, what follows is one in an occasional series of interviews with respected leaders in the LGBT community. Dr. Winn is a physician at Jefferson University and at Mazzoni Center and offered his perspective on some issues that affect our health.

Voyeur Found in the Gayborhood

The word voyeur can mean a few things: a peeping Tom, an observer of sensational or sexual subjects, and now Voyeur means Philly’s hottest Gayborhood destination! It will replace Pure as our favorite dance-the-night-away-spot. This is keeping with the many changes and additions going on in the Gayborhood!

Will someone please think about the children!!!

In all of the articles you’ve written that I’ve read you’ve never shown any concern with the effect all this graphic sex talk has on kids. I see that your site says it’s for adults only, but you’re part of an overall system of in-your-face sexuality that I see and hear every day. What do you have to say to us parents who have the responsibility to protect our kids?

Bumped up a Notch

If you are like me and adore summer you might need things to look forward to after Labor Day comes to pass. John Caputo, Mr. Gay Philadelphia 2008 and two business partners are already promising us something that will “bump up” the fun this fall. They have taken over Bump at 13th & Locust and plan to revitalize it for all of Philly’s cocktail sippers.

Don’t be a Douche!

You’ve got to help me settle a question: a super gross question. When is it necessary for a woman to douche? I’ve heard it’s not something to do on the regular, but I’ve done it a few times when I felt the so-called ‘less than fresh’ feeling. My girlfriend was saying that they wouldn’t be available in stores if they weren’t being commonly used. So what’s the deal?

The Truth about Bisexuals

Question: Bisexuals? What does this have to do with lesbians? Or gays for that matter? The gateway sexual preference? The thing is that homosexuals don’t get to choose, bisexuals do. Thus, did the author of this letter enjoy the taste of semen when she goes down on her girlfriend? Protect yourself. Several times over. The diseases these bisexual men and women pass are large scale.

My Very Own Bisexual Girlfriend

I’ve been dating a girl who’s bisexual for almost two months now. I’m crazy about her, everything’s clicking, and a few days ago, we officially declared ourselves exclusive. Only problem is we haven’t exactly discussed any “ground rules” – if there are any to be made – covering her bisexuality. I know it goes well beyond some experimental phase and that she’ll always be very attracted to women. I’m okay with that and I certainly wouldn’t want to limit her or deprive her of something that she innately desires, and that I could never physically provide for her myself. But at the same time, I’ve never been in a relationship where other people are fair game, and I have no idea how I’d react to such a situation. Part of me says, hey, it’s just chicks, and that’s always hot, and the other says, um, why can’t I be enough? It’s a tough situation to hash out on my own. Care to help a brother out?

Come Out Already!

I’m a cute, professional gay man in my late 20s, suddenly single after a two year long relationship. The problem was my boyfriend refused to come out, claiming that he wasn’t gay: that he was straight but just into me. That was fine enough for a long time because I loved him and wanted to be with him, but it became a big problem eventually because I already came out a decade ago and have no interest in hanging around the closet door waiting forever for him to come join me on the outside. I also let it slide because he’s Arab and wanted to respect the cultural differences but it wore on me and eventually I had to give him an ultimatum: be real about our relationship or split. We know how that conversation turned out. Was I wrong? Should I have been more understanding? I miss him and am horny as all get out but the random hook up scene is not making me feel any better.

Regeneration

Brought to you by the charmingly off-hinge imaginations of some of Philly’s Dumpsta Players and featuring work by local artists, Regeneration presents re-imaginings and re-purposed inventions from illustrative typography to ornate wig art.

When the hubby gets a little chubby?

“I can’t do it anymore: have sex with my partner, that is. When we first got together 8 years ago he wasn’t a health nut or anything, but he was normal weight and very attractive to me. A few years into dating, he started to let himself go: eating too much and never getting any exercise. Three years ago when it became legal here in New Jersey, we had a civil union and since we’ve been married he’s gained probably another 50 pounds. Not only am I not attracted to him anymore but the sex has gone downhill too. He can’t get erections as easily, they don’t stay hard and he’s lazy about how we do it. It’s just not worth it to me anymore. I refuse to fake interest. If he doesn’t care about his appearance, what else can I do?”

Philadelphia Liberty Gay Tennis Association

I love tennis. It has long been the only sport I can endure to watch on television. Growing up, quite out of character, I welcomed NBC’s mid-summer preemption of “Days of our Lives” in lieu of Wimbledon – an exchange of one sweaty drama for another. In 1993, I was 16, Pete Sampras and Steffi Graf won Wimbledon, and I was going to marry Steffi while having an affair with Pete.

Karaoke night at 12th Air

I’ve head the name 12th Air Command so many times in the years I’ve been wondering Philadelphia. Everyone has something to say about the place. I’ve mostly heard horror stories about it. I was excited to go there having built up this huge idea of what the place was based on hear say

Same Old Sex Formula

I’ve been with my girlfriend for a little over a year and we get along great. She’s really smart and cool and is an incredibly talented designer and seamstress. I’m constantly blown away by how creative and thoughtful she is. Sounds perfect, right? Except our sex life is awful. She wants it the exact same – every single time. What can I do?”

Diva’s at Stir

I descend on 17th and Chancellor at 10:30 looking either ridiculously ferocious or ferociously ridiculous, in a pin-striped fedora and a pair of oversized silver-colored frames that would make even Sir Elton John revolve in his hairpiece. Find out what happens next

Camac Martini Bar

Camac Martini Bar is a beautiful little spot located in the heart of Philly’s Gayborhood. The front of the building is a little bit misleading, from the appearance of the dark glass windows you might think it was a classic Philly dive, but when you walk in the door you’re immediately greeted by the glorious smell of brick oven Pizza and scented candles.

Matthew Izzo: Life is Art

I went to Matthew Izzo’s official opening party, two weeks ago for March First Friday. I normally would apologize for the delay but Matthew seems to constantly evolve; thus everyday is an opening. The new space is bigger, warmer. It boasts a wide, wooden, retail floor on the ground level, with a seemingly vintage wood and glass display case, while the stairway boasts an inviting, colorful assembly of vintage art.

Three’s a Crowd

I’m a female and just started being in a relationship with a girl for the first time and I’m trying to figure out what is appropriate and what is not. The problem is my girlfriend is hanging out with a girl she briefly saw while we were in our “open” relationship phase. They go to the gym together, go to dinner, run all the time, etc. And this girl was heartbroken after my girlfriend told her she had to break it off with her because of her commitment to me. Now my girlfriend insists we all 3 go on runs together and hang out. I’m not comfortable with this because I get the vibe from the girl that she is still interested in my girlfriend. I don’t know what to do because my girlfriend claims she doesn’t like her in that way and that it’s strictly a platonic relationship. What should I so?

Foyer Philadelphia

I am constantly amazed by kids who are aware of their sexuality and have the courage to come out at an early age. Society isn’t always as thrilled and accepting. Each year there are between 115,000 and 640,000 homeless and runaway LGBTQ youth in this country.

Nightlife Legends Series – DJ Reenie Kane

Spinning for well over 30 years, DJ Reenie Kane has helped shape what we know now as gay nightlife. An out lesbian with a partner (the beautiful and widely-loved Adele) of just as many years, Reenie has been making both gay and straight people dance with an eclectic mix and a music catalog that rivals just about anyone in the world.

Oscar On the Square

This past Oscar Sunday, Rittenhouse Square played host to The Red Carpet Oscar Party, decidedly not a mere walk through the park! The event was the brainchild of Desiree Hines and Mark Dahl, both of Traverse Arts Project, and both fixtures of everything fun and theatrical in Philly.

Will losing 110 pounds gain you a boyfriend?

I have a weird question and I don’t know if anyone can really answer it. After years of being heavy… no, really, I was fat…I’ve turned my life around and gotten in shape. A nutritionist, 5 times a week at the gym and a lot of sweat later, I’ve lost 110 pounds. I’m now lean and living an entirely new life… and finding myself unprepared for the attention I get from men. Even though I’m 29 I’ve never really dated and I don’t know how to respond to flirting. It’s also hard not to resent these guys too because I know that 110 pounds ago they wouldn’t have given me the time of day. How do I make up for all those years of not being in the dating pool with everyone else?

Don’t be a Cock Block!

I was out with some of my boys the other night and I see a hottie I really want to talk to. I make my way over, start chatting him up and then my friend comes over and cock blocks me. He starts talking to the hottie about some guy I used to date to make it sound like I have a boyfriend and then starts hitting on my hottie. It’s one thing if he’s trying to compete with me over the same boy but he doesn’t even end up asking for his number anyway. It’s like he just wants to stop me from getting it. If I mention something about this to him he acts like it’s my problem and I need to step up my game. What’s his deal?

Thursday Night at Sisters

A month into my very scientific investigatory Thursday Night probe, what have I learned? – That people who go out on Thursday Night are generally in a jovial mood and want to have a good time. Insightful? No. But quite true! Anyhow, this time around I’ve headed to our city’s popular lesbian club, Sisters.

Latin Night at Woody’s

“I love to bailar” is my Latina spitfire sister’s go-to party mantra. And she would feel right at home at Woody’s Latin Night, not just because she’d be partying with her big hermano, but because this weekly Thursday extravaganza boasts one of the loudest, sweatiest, and hip-swaying-est dance parties around.

Going Down Dilemma

I’m a bisexual woman and I’ve been with my girlfriend for three months. I love her and everything, problem is I don’t love going down on her. She thinks it’s emotional distance, but I really don’t like the way she tastes. She has great hygiene, so that isn’t the problem. How do I tell her without her getting offended?

Size Queen at Bump Thursday, 1/15

My second stop on the Thursday Night express also happened to fall on the very night of chic chick Cyoni’s birthday extravaganza. Bearing in mind both the general upper-crust atmosphere of Bump and the sartorial responsibility inherent in attending such a glossy occasion, I switched out my usual ratty jeans/second-hand tee uniform to attend the soiree in a subtly-hued stretch button-down paired with charcoal grey slacks and honest-to-gawd dress shoes.

Hope Returns in 2009

We have seen an African-American man become elected into Office. Yet besides this revolutionary fact and far more importantly we now have won a president promising something novel: hope, peace and a return to those ideals that made America the Union it is today.

The Drag Show at Bob & Barbara’s

Ever the intrepid busybody and accomplished drinking buddy, I’ve made it my mission to investigate Philly’s Thursday Night lineup, and report back to you the what where when and how much of the evening’s offerings. I do this in humble service to the community, and not because I like to go out and get hosed on weeknights.

Is Ex-Sex right for you?

My ex and I split up about 2 and a half months ago after a year and a half of being together. We broke up because he wasn’t taking our relationship seriously enough for me, canceling plans at the last minute and not being attentive. He is only the third person I’ve ever slept with. I know he’s seeing a couple people casually now but I haven’t been seeing anyone and I’m getting lonely. The last couple times I went out to the bars I really wanted to call him and see if he wanted to just hook up. My friends have talked me out of it, but I don’t think it’s a bad idea because I know it’ll be good and I feel safe with him and it’ll keep me satisfied until I find someone new. Who’s right?”

Coming OUT of the Closet in 2009

So from what I hear many are expecting much from 2009, whether it’s love, endeavors, or my favorite, FASHION! Word on the street is that many, notably both young and old, are coming OUT the closet now more than ever. Whether this statement is gossip or not, you can answer this hypothesis by simply glancing at your surroundings

2008 Year of Disappointment

So it’s 2009. Congratulations if you’ve made it this far in this climate and were still able to celebrate even if the merriment had to be somewhat fabricated. Personally, I felt none of it real or not. The gooey Christmas feelings and the New Year’s Eve elation of festivity were all completely wasted on me.

The Sarah Palin Show

This past Thursday we were treated to what many people have come to call “The Sarah Palin Show.” I don’t know how many people tuned in to actually watch the debate, as much as see the Governor of Alaska instead of her SNL double! I treated the debate like Class A-entertainment. I dragged the dining table into the living room, had a friend over for dinner then whipped up the most American meal I could think of: steak, potatoes, Caesar salad and cheap, red wine from California.

Paying Tribute to Tony Sparacino

Friends and loved ones gathered Friday night at the Mazzoni Center in Philadelphia to honor the late Tony Sparacino. The tribute included the Sapphire Fund’s presentation of the First Annual Tony Sparacino Memorial Scholarship to student John Davenport, and the unveiling of a plague dedicating a procedure room in the Mazzoni Center in Tony’s memory.

Customized

I decided to hire Georgi of GP Productionz to design my attire. The ambitious, youthful, multi-talented, bachelorette now reigning in the heart of Philadelphia has provided her clientele with customized designs on just about every piece of clothing you could think of.

Tease

Ladies and gents this is definitely something to get excited about! Fashion, photography, and music will be exhibited while the city hottest DJs will be spinning that House, Latin, Dance, and World-Rhythms tunes we oh so love

Color Me Colorful for Summer 2008

Color me colorful when it comes to clothing–and many other things in my life. I mean who wishes for a dull life. That’s what the world’s menswear designers are saying these days. Sure you’ll still wear a lot of basic black but you can always spruce it up with one, two or several colors any time.

The People Have Spoken

Last night was an emotional victory no matter how you cut it. Pennsylvanians spoke and they spoke loudly. Pennsylvanians spoke not simply in choosing Clinton by a 10 point spread as the Democratic presidential candidate, but also by their demonstrated commitment to the political process. Clinton and Obama aren’t the only ones who are tired; we too survived seven long weeks of campaigning!

The Primary is Today. What Will I Do Tomorrow?

Ms. Chelsea Clinton made a second appearance in Philadelphia’s Gayborhood to urge the gay public to support her mother in today’s Primary election. I am just tired. These campaigns have become so Machiavellian. Allegations thrown left, conspiracy theories thrown right. And it is because we are tired of the current administration and we are fighting passionately.

Involvement and Our Issues

I think the current Democratic Party presidential race is proving that our democratic process does work. It is working wonderfully. Voters have been given opportunities to give their voice and to make decisions. The real key is that multiple points of view are being heard. Isn’t is a goal of a democracy to give a voice to as many people as possible? Shouldn’t we be embracing this thrilling, albeit complicated, process?

Hillary Clinton’s LGBT Record

With the April 22nd Primaries quickly approaching, Pennsylvania is buzzing. While I’ll be featuring columns on Hillary Clinton leading up to the primaries, regardless of who becomes our president, I am ecstatic that the apathy shrouding this country for the last two terms is lifting and people are engaged in politics again. People care again. People are passionate again.

DJ Manny Lehman in Philly

Manny Lehman is the central part of many gay community members’ dance memories. He’s spun everywhere from Montreal to Miami; New York to LA. He’s headlined almost every circuit party on the planet. Matthew Ray of HX Philadelphia chatted with Manny from his dreary office in the cold Gayborhood while Manny lounged in his cabin on an Atlantis cruise. Lucky bastard!

MEN

As I look at the stamp mark on my hand from the door guy at North Star Bar I hope it never comes off. I want it as a reminder. If you were wondering to yourself last night, March 4, 2008, “Where are all the sexy bitches?” I can tell you Gay Philly they were at the MEN show.

Interview with designer Pietra

Pietra is a gifted woman with many talents that range from designing clothes and home decor to make-up artistry and even photography. She holds a degree from Drexel University in Photography and is currently in graduate school for Creative Writing. For over five years Pietra has provided us with stylish, colorful, and mood changing designs at prices that will even make my wallet happy.

Toby, Age 21

My dad was kinda your typical hard-ass conservative father. It’s all about family, getting married, having kids…about being a man. I guess that’s what he meant when he made fun of the gay guys he worked with—they weren’t real men.

Queer Rock

Perhaps you think that you are the only Rockband playing, Bowie sing-a-long, Bob Mould loving or even rap loving LGBT citizen in the city. So maybe you still use that hair brush as a microphone belting out tunes in front of the mirror as you get dressed for yet another night out of repetitive club music.

David, Age 27

I’ve never been very good at this. Seems like I can’t figure out dating very well, but I can figure out how to have sex. I can figure out how to go meet in a club and hang out for an hour or two, then go fuck, but that’s not really doing it for me anymore

Philly Roller Girls

Philly Roller Girls derby championship event, The Warrior Cup, was a little slice of heaven, wrapped in generous dollops of brute force, bounteous proportions of finesses and grace and a shitload of a great-ass time. It has something for everyone. You c

Bring Safer-Sexy Back!

One of the challenges facing public health is making HIV prevention relevant to gay men today. As public attention and resources have shifted to other populations, communities of gay men that had been touted as early successes in the war on HIV, have begu

Review of ‘Jeffrey’

Last week, I attended a behind the scenes preview of the play Jeffrey and I immediately liked it. I had the pleasure of seeing the actors read through lines and the excitement of the crew. Seeing the full on production was very satisfying and exceeded my expectations.
